This is Dan Richards, president of your state's Fish & Game Commission, posing with the mountain lion he recently killed in Idaho--for fun. The picture speaks for itself.

What a magnificent animal, cat, and what a retarded human. Too bad you didn't have enough courage to fight it without a high-powered rifle, just hand to hand. Your head would've been ripped to shreds.

He didn't just hide behind his high powered rifle. He paid thousands to hide behind a pack of hunting dogs and several professional hunters.

Let's all go to the FB page of the ranch that organized the hunt (Mr Richards posted his "kill" photo there) and comment (politely, now).

I am the person who was with Mr. Richards when he shot this cat. I am also the one who is in the process of eating it as well. We served cougar for dinner that night as well. Cougars are no different than any other wildlife; they all need management. There may be hope for Californians wildlife with Dan as the head of the wildlife commission. By the way, Dan had the chance to shoot other cougars that he let go before taking this one.

@Joseph, It is illegal to kill cougers here in California. As president of the Fish & Game Commission here in Califonia, Mr. Richards represents Californians and he clearly disrepected and misrepresented his position by going to another state to kill the couger.

hunters are constantly proclaiming that deer populations are so high as to require culling. doesn't this photo tell you why deer population explosions exist. nature has its own means of management, but it can't function properly with human interference.

Joseph is one of the ranch guys who joined today care2 not for the care of earth and earthlings, but to see what's going on, this was our conversation:
Joseph Peterson There could be hope for the ignorent magority of Californians if Dan is now the head of the Game Commission. Here in Idaho, the US Fish and Wildlife Service introduced wolves in 1995 over the strong objections of the state. Our central part of the state has now had the elk herds decline by 85% due to documented predation. Moose herds are worse. There is a reason Alaska and Idaho have areal shooting of wolves and concentrated predator reductions- if left unchecked, predators will decimate wildlife populations to thier own demise. It could be that California has a chance to fix a long time problem with Dan at the head of the Commission.

@Joseph. Thank you for joining the conversation. This reminds me of the debate in England that led to the banning of fox hunting. The most important arguments against hunting for "sport" are highlighted in bold.
病nimals are often killed painfully
病nimals suffer pain and fear during the chase
病nimals that escape may be injured
鰭unting involves unnecessary cruelty, as animal population control can be better done in other ways
付he basic interests of the hunted animals are seriously violated in order to satisfy less basic human interests 付he animal interest is the basic one of continuing to live
付he trivial human interests are sport, pleasure and the preservation of cultural traditions

Clearly Mr Roberts and the other hunters who are coming to your ranch are coming to fulfil trivial and less basic instincts. Casino gambling would be a better way for them to spend their time - it does not affect another creature.

Joseph - recent scientific studies have indicated that those with conservative views have a larger amygdala - the area of the brain that processes fear. Clearly you and those "sportsmen" you enourage have deep-seated insecurities that you seek to fix by killing an innocent animal. May I suggest that therapy would be an option? Or next time you feel like going off into the woods and killing something you post something here? We have several hundred thousand friends who will willingly come and hold your hand. We will be offering the same service to Mr Dan Richards:)

posted by my friend jeffery on fb:

President Daniel W. Richards, of Upland, was appointed to the Fish and Game Commission on February 14, 2008. Daniel is a graduate of West Virginia University. He is married to Judy K. Richards and has a married daughter. For the past 30, he has dealt in commercial real estate and real estate development. Currently he owns Coldwell Banker Commercial Inland Empire and has been one of the top 50 Coldwell Banker Commercial Brokers, worldwide.

Along with being involved in many community activities, he is currently a Life Member of The Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep and the National Rifle Association. Daniel is also a supporting member of Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, and various other conservation organizations. He works closely with non-profit organizations in the Upland area to help them grow and find success, and has recently received the Leadership Award from the Foothill Family Shelter. Daniel enjoys fly fishing, hunting, and traveling with his family.

Why would anyone appoint a commercial real estate broker to this position... CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS!

If anyone knows of any online petition to the CA state legislature to remove this jerk, please post it (or start one).
Note: Governor Brown does not have the authority to remove him -- the legislature must do it.

I think his behavior is reprehensible. I'm from a hunting family, but there is no acceptable reason to kill a beautiful animal like this which plays in important role in the balance of nature, was not killing domestic animals, and is not considered a food source. And he cannot bring his trophy into the state of California, so what exactly was the point? For a memorable photograph? Could have done that with a tranquilizer. What an absolute dolt. I don't want this man making game management decisions for my state! Take him OUT.

the proud grin on his face shows what a low-life piece of garbage he truly is. dan richards needs to be decapitated, and sold as a trophy. murdering any animal is an act of cowardice. humans have weapons, animals are defenseless. is this an act of machoism? if they think it is, they are totally deluded. murdering an animal is no less horrendous than murdering a human. here we even have an endangered species....a wild, beautiful cat who just wants to live his life. with one shot from this loser, it is all over. he smiles, a gorgeous endangered animal is dead, and we MUST stick together to give him what he deserves. something that will wipe that stupid grin off his ugly face.

The tragic loss this cougar I believe has confused as to what the California Fish and Game Commission actually does and does not do. The commission does not protect wildlife. It sets quotas for hunters on how many animals they can kill per season. It sets quotas for how many fish fisherman can catch. The following is taken from Duck Hunting Chat dot com. : Governor Appoints Daniel Richards to Fish and Game Commission

Yesterday Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointment of Mr. Daniel Richards to the California Fish and Game Commission. Mr. Richards is the founder of Coldwell Banker Commercial-Inland Empire and currently serves as Chief Executive Officer. A life-long hunter and angler, Mr. Richards also currently serves as chair of the San Bernardino County Fish and Game Commission. The California Outdoor Heritage Alliance, California Waterfowl Association and other conservation organizations were pleased to support Mr. Richard痴 appointment to the Commission.

Dan Richards has the support of his peers. Hunters and fisherman. I believe the majority of Dan Richards peers wish they could kill a cougar. As I see that a majority of the comments posted wish they could kill Dan. This is one man. One cougar. We need to change the minds of hunters and the law itself.
It's an uphill battle. But what else is new on Care2. We should be used to it by now. And that is why we are here.

During WWII, the Germans hired sadists to run their death camps. This looks like an example of that thinking: put a murdering SOB in charge of Fish and Game, so that he can get all his kills in legally. And although CA doesn't allow slaughtering of mountain lions, Idaho apparently does. What will this moron do with the dead animal, let it rot, stuff it or cut its head off for display in his office. Kick this jerk the hell out of office. I'm in Illinois, but will be glad to help start a petition to have this grapefruit fired and never be allowed to hold any public office again. If everyone will pass the word to boycott PERMANENTLY Coldwell Banker Commercial Inland Empire, owned by Mr. Richards, and write the the franchisor about Mr. Richards, it may have more effect than the slap on the wrist he'll probably get from the Governor. Also, Richards was on a canned hunt at a ranch where these animals and others have no way of avoiding death, and it's considered sport. I wonder how many shots it took this jerk to wound, maim and murder this beautiful creature. And Joseph P. of the ranch calls this animal management.

Your absolutely right Maria, shame on him. And shame on any hunter that hunts for sport. I'm not a lawyer, but I do know this. When I turned 18 the drinking age in my state (Illinois) was & is 21. But across the border in Wisconsin it was 18. So what is a teen to do but .... ROAD TRIP!! State laws are only valid for the states themselves. They don't cross state lines. That's Federal law. I was in Wisconsin. Dan was in Idaho. I agree with Pat L. boycott Coldwell Banker. In the end that's the only way to hurt him. Go for the money!! In the end that's all Dan cares about. Also another tid bit for everyone. Every state has a Fish and Game department dealing with fishing and hunting. Like it or not . It is what it is until we change it.

Mary D (64)
Sunday February 19, 2012, 10:29 am
I'm waiting for the day when there is a law that states that the punishment for hunting and killing animals would be that a group of hunters take their rifles and knives, or whatever instruments of death they use, and go after the person (if we can call it that) and treat him the way he has treated animals. There is no reason for hunting - not anymore. I'm a 40-year vegetarian, and I haven't died of starvation - in fact, everyone tells me I look much younger than I am. I rarely get colds or other seasonal ailments. But there are those out there who say they can't get along without meat. Hah! Try it some time!

This is the letter I sent to the governor
Dear Mr Brown:

I am writing to you in indignation and I speak for many.
Mr Dan Richards is in a position where we think he should not, nor any avid hunter. The mission of conservation of our animals should not be biassed. At this time there is an outrage regarding an photo of him which I will provide for you, holding a dead mountain lion, which in his own state, is protected. He went all then way to Idaho just to kill this majestic animal, not to even be able to take back home, just to give it away to Mr Joseph Peterson at the Flying B Ranch, that organized "the hunt".
I have created two petitions that are viral, as in one day, one of them has almost 500 signatures from all over the world, Californians aswell. I, myself, am Californian, though I reside in Washington State. One petition is asking him to resign, the other asking the commission to fire him:

There is also a link to California Majority exposing outrage towards him:

We will be presenting these petitions to the commission as well as to yourself soon. I know the commission will be gathering in March, we will try to do this before then.

We are disgusted at this man having such position, being so partisan. Our animals depend on us.

Thank you so much, hoping you might see this as we do, and we will continue to spread the photo and information all over the communications media.

@ Joseph P. are F*****G for real & you have the audacity to join a site called Care2.... This is all I have to say to any one that does not respect/protect all lives as they treasure theirs. Universal/Karmic laws are in place & is surely awaiting for you, have no fear you will also reap what you have sown! And to boost about it publicly on a web site of this magnitude! Well what more is there to say!

What an evil, cruel, pathetic excuse for a Man, he should be sacked straight away and go back under the stone he crawled out from. How frightening that someone like that is in a position of power over defenceless animals. Who the hell would hire him?

Jared Huffman is my assemblyman in California and is currently running for Representative to Congress. I have voted and supported Jared for several years and consider him to be a good man.

Please write to Jared Huffman at the address below that you support him in gettingDaniel W. Richards, president of the California Fish and Game Commission, removed from office immediately.

Richards is facing more political fallout.

In 2010, his former business partner was indicted, along with three other men, on charges of bribery, conflict of interest, tax fraud, tax evasion, perjury and forgery. San Bernardino County prosecutors said the indicted men worked to corrupt public officials in connection with a $102 million settlement in a land development deal

Thank you very much for posting. Sent emails last night to Fish and Game and Jerry Brown. Petitions signed - whatever I can do! I am passionate about my state and protection and conservation of wildlife - and many people here are and we do not want some one who clearly snubs his nose at California laws and has zilch integrity and ethics. Period. Thank you Jim for the additional email address and to everyone here helping and sharing information.

TIME TO GET SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT WILDLIFE!! This is Unacceptable/Excuse-less!What/who is he trying to prove something to,in the name of a sport. If he really need something to entertain himself or prove something with so bad,do a real sport that actually shows skill not just appalling need to ends somethings life, can't you find better ways to use your money, like on something that might make a positive difference! This is sad,we humans are so ungrateful for what we have, and a distorted sense that we're entitled to do what ever we want to any other living thing just horrifies me,where do we get off disregarding everything and anything living thing around us,such shameful, undeserving the human species can be!STOP KILLING!

Society generally concedes that hunting was once an essential aspect of our existence. Will someone please explain why this is any less true today? Is it because we do not "need" to hunt? After all, supermarket shelves sag under the weight of frozen chicken, bacon and fish, not to mention vegetable options galore. But, before patting himself on the back in acknowledgement of his imagined enlightenment, I wonder if the anti-hunter considers a comparison of the damage caused in the producing his own meal. Growing chickens, beef, broccoli or beets requires the wholesale destruction of entire ecosystems. We have turned millions of acres of forest, grasslands and wetlands into monocultures incapable of producing anything besides wheat, gophers and insect "pests". And then we dump thousands of tons of fertilizer and pesticides into the air, water and soil to sustain our "enlightenment". And what became of the wildlife that once inhabited that tofu field, anyway? Please, do not confuse willful ignorance with environmental consciousness. To argue that the complete elimination of wildlife habitat is ethically superior to the controlled harvest of individuals from within their natural environment is ridiculous.

Petitions signed to call for his resignation. We do not need people in office like this who are to protect our animals. This mountain lion belonged to the American people and was not his to take from us. Make him pay.

Not everyone is a Vegan, Dan Richards and the ranchers did not kill the mountain lion for fun, they were animals that needed to be put down, they hunted them and then they ate the mountain lion. No matter the species, meat is meat, be it a chicken, fish, cow, pig or mountain lion. Dan Richards is the President of the California Fish and Game Commission and is charged with protecting and managing our wildlife, he protects and manages California's wildlife very well in California and he helped Idaho manage theirs.
