Engineering History: How Vikings Made Ships

Science & Tech  (tags: discovery, interesting, investigation, research, technology )

Vikings are known as fearless warriors, but they wouldn't have gotten anywhere without being great shipbuilders. Norse ship design was passed down from father to son from generation to generation as the art was developed and refined.

They were very sea worthy and we know they did cross oceans.

Water is not a barrier to early humans, rather it became a highway for travel and exploration.

When I had a TV I saw several specials, think on the History Channel, about how they built ships and how they navigated. It's fascinating and I've always thought that it was great that whole ships have been found and brought out of the mud, or the water, and preserved. Too bad we don't value our historical places much - like the Native American burial mounds and memorials.

Most of the Celts in my family are still drawn to the water. Now I know why.

Thank you, very interesting indeed. Just wondering about the use of the same tools and materials to build the ship: would the Vikings have had galvanized rivets?
