I've already done all that and more. Trying to keep out the heat is very difficult in the desert. I have even had my windows tinted with the same type of film used on car windows. Every little bit helps.

Plant deciduous trees east and west to keep out morning and afternoon sun. They may take a while to grow, but don't cost much.

And put shades on the outside of the windows - once the sun goes through the glass it turns into heat. Inside drapes only protect your furniture from fading.
