Every year thousands of children in Ghana are sent to Lake Volta, to a life of modern slavery in the fishing industry. Some are callously sold by their families. Others are sent in ignorance by parents who believe traffickers' promises of an education...

When there is a surplus of anything it is devalued. This unfortunately includes human life and in this case children.

In Africa from the days of the early missionaries to today’s AID agencies efforts are focused on reduction of infantile mortality rates without considering the vital need for contraception. In other words quantity of life is favoured over quality of life.

Exploitation of “surplus” children is the result and no amount of petitioning and outraged Western emotion will make much difference until the birth rate is reduced and children acquire some value. This has to start with a quantum change in the way African women are treated that at present is in most cases, no better than brood mares.

Have signed and noted. As the petition states, if the church leaders encourage families not to sell their children into slavery, maybe less of this will take place. Thanks.
