"If you can't do the time, don't do the crime." So goes the old saying. Yet conditions in some American facilities are so obscene that they amount to a form of extrajudicial punishment.

WARNING: Some of the details are grusome.

I am not going to tell you that I am a bleeding heart liberal that does not believe in prisons, because I am not. However, I do believe that rehabilitation is possible for many. It is really necessary to look at why people indulge in crime and build from there.

In another article I posted from Alternet, "private prison populations" have grown by 784%. Prisoners have become commodities like pork bellies, soy beans or gold. Contracts with state and federal governments may have clauses in them that require the justice system to keep prisons at 90% occupancy or better.

In this article from Mother Jones, there is, on the right side, a link to the different parts of the story revolving around the individual prisons.

Prisons are necessary. But shouldn't there be an effort to rehabilitate prisoners to lower or prevent recidivism? Shouldn't there be minimum levels of care for prisoners? I am not referring to Club Fed facilities and attitudes --- I think they should all be abolished --- you do the crime, you do the time. But what I am referring to is basic human rights. If you treat people like animals, guaranteed you will get an animal back who will be caught in a revolving door.

What do you think?

Sheriff Joe has the right idea, although he can be a bit over the top at times..If the federal govt did their job regarding immigration, he wouldnt be doing it by himself..
prisoners are there for a reason but still deserve basic rights..clean water, food, and when in extreme temperatures, some kind of relief. 145 degrees is unacceptable..
solitary confinement is supposed to be for when someone acts out, not for the whole time they are there
assault by others cannot be avoided, but from guards is unacceptable.
its disgusting people are getting rich off housng people, esp when many of the offenders are non violent.
