This USDA report attempting to make the case for "organic genetically engineering" is part of a well-funded campaign coordinated by Monsanto and their governmental, corporate, and non-profit partners to legitimize a dangerous and untested technology

Thanks Elena. When I see USDA certified organic products in my grocery store in Canada, I just roll my eyes. They have watered down their standards so bad that it seems like just another marketing concept that is not based in reality and does not provide the assurance that organics consumers are looking for.

The only reason they want us to eat their Frankenstien food is big bucks profit! Of course it may be that if we all glowed in the dark they could save on street lighting or lights at work etc!

So since the USDA lacks credibility, also sucking at the teat of corporate cronies, who should now set the organic standards?

Motion passed, cowboss and chris. Nature has its own way of providing genetic modification. Natural genetic mutation = "evolution" which causes plants or animals to better adapt to an environment. The best adapted survive. Wind and birds and insects provide natural cross pollination to allow for new, perhaps hardier or better adapted plants; if the results are not adapted, they do not proliferate long. This is the only school to graduate from, and that's what people did for thousands of years: these wheat stalks had bigger and healthier grains? Plant them. This tomato plant had firmer, healthier and tastier tomatoes? Plant its seeds. This dog or horse or sheep was stronger or better adapted to herding or pulling or wool production? breed it to other strong and healthy animals and raise its babies. Nobody had to fiddle under microscopes. Nature did it and we just followed nature's advice, and copied natural techniques. OK, the GMO advocates say that with technology we can go faster. But that does not leave us the time to see what the long term adverse effects will be, and avoid their spread! Thanks, Elena.

Roseann - there are probably independent certifying agencies with published standards in the US, as there are in Canada. You can bet there is one of them in the US that has not caved in to the pressure of the biotech and pharmaceutical lobbies.
