Did you know ...

According to one report, 235,086 tons of plastic bottles were generated and approximately 84,744 tons were recovered and recycled in 2002. Canadian provinces with deposit returnprogrammes have much higher recycling rates. The average recovery rate (2002) for beverage bottles in non-deposit programs was 33%, compared with an average of 75% where these programmes are in use. Overall, there was an average recovery rate of only 48% in 2002 for all plastic beverage containers in Canada (CM Consulting for Environment and Plastics Industry Council [EPIC]: An Overview of Plastic Bottle Recycling in Canada, August 2004).

we really need to get back to glass bottles which are the real recyclables. I dont see that plastic if it has to be remade again is a recyclable and I dont understand smashing up glass bottles and remaking them again as my idea of recyclable. I would like to see milk back in glass bottles and bringing them back to the supermarkets when you next shop and water should definately be in glass bottles as there is a chemical in plastic which leaches into the water causing a surpression of male hormone. When I was young orange cordial was in a glass bottle I think it was called kiora and again they paid you a small amound of money when you brought it back. A glass bottle can be reused 10 times maybe more without having to remanufacture it. Other thinks I want to see is Manufacturers not putting ASPARTAME in there cordials and food this is a neuro toxin and I think its time our governments stopped the nazis.

Nobody will convince me plastic is a green thing. We need to move onto more natural materials this applies to neuclear power there is no mention of solar power I notice yet if every home was using solar we would be having less bills and there would be no need for us to worry about oil or gas going out of existance.

Neuclear power is a most dangerous toxic thing for the planet because the waste will cause cancers and deformaties on our childrens children.

Too much plastic is generated and used everyday. It is nice to see that so many people like to eliminate it completely! Thank you all for noting and commenting.

Very nice ,thanks for the post:)this should be applied around the world where people use bottled water!!
Let's hope too that first more people get clean drinking water where filters can be installed so no bottles are needed,or using jugs with filters is a good thing too,you just use tap water and it tastes good and is safe

I installed a filter on my water pump when I first bought my house 12 years ago. I have well water and it tastes fine. When I leave the house to run errands I always take a reusable stainless steel bottle. The money saved by not buying bottled water is incredible. Let's face it. It makes sense and you save money while reducing waste. Jump on the band wagon, World!

Nancy - I can not even remember when I last ate at McDonalds ... yuck ...
Well done Patricia - thank you for sharing.
And thank you all again for noting and posting. The more people are aware, the more they will join and stop drinking from the plastic bottles.

Me, too, Nancy. Returnable and therefore always recyclable GLASS milk bottles. Also soda bottles. I wish they were ALL still returnable. Think of how many plastic bottles THAT would get out of the equation. Water in plastic bottles is pretty darn ridiculous when there are so many alternatives. Bottled water should be reserved for emergencies that might find one without water or one's water supply contaminated--keep some around for that but give up the casual everyday use. Refillable containers which will keep it cool are much better.

This is a wonderful idea to have a day of no plastic water bottle use! There is no point in using bottled water when there are so many easy and inexpensive options as already stated by others.

Not to mention the very controversial chemicals used in making them: BPA, and/or PET (polyethylene terephthalate).

Plastics And BPA
Many plastics contain a chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA. BPA is found in many products such as baby bottles, water bottles, and storage containers. BPA is used in the production of epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics, and it tends to find its way into many of our everyday products including the lining of aluminum cans.
