The cats on that property are part of the Hemingway "package".They are a colony, generations old, and are ,in an unusual way part of this writer's past.

What on earth do they intend to do with these cats? They obviously have someone looking after them because they look well fed healthy...

Wow. One of the most assinine things I've heard in a long time. I agree with Allan. I'm sure there must be something in Hemingway's will that protects the cats. If the government's so flippin' worried about animal welfare, maybe they should spend the money on some shelters! Thanks Barb

The cats should be left alone. As Allan Y said " The cats on that property are part of the Hemingway 'package'.

We can't seem to manage proactive decisions about our environment, economy, health care, use of guns, fossil fuel vs. green energy, or any thing else of importance so gee, let's waste money, time and energy on cats. Isn't our country grand?

Are the kitties spayed / neutered ?
i hope they are , Also I wonder if simply its a ploy to take over a valuable property .
Perhaps the caretakers should step forward with a statement / petition .
Thanks Barb , Hoping the kitties are always safe & well in their home .

Noted! My Goodness Barb...What a beautiful piece of work you have brought to us!!! I have always been very interested on Hemingway's gargantuan love for cats, as read the story many years ago. But, had completely forgotten that they were all polydactyls. This is a keeper and is being book marked now. Thank you so much for this. You are awesome.

Thanks Barb this kind of thing really makes me mad! NONE of those cats looked like they were wanting for anything people really should learn to mind their own bussiness!! What i cant get is WHY in Florida can a man get away with having sex with a donkey as in Doodles case but if you try to keep a few cats or more (and keep them well) the gov wants to get all involved want to save some animals Florida then save the ones who needs saving!

I had remembered about these cats having visited there many moons ago, so I googled and found this..not good news for the kitties, and a government that I feel has a really stupid reason..
And yes, if I remember correctly, there was some posturing taking place as to greedy relatives...*sigh
Thanks BarbCat ♥

Feds Can Restrict Hemingway's Cats: Ruling

By Neal Colgrass,  Newser StaffPosted Dec 16, 2012 5:04 PM CST2 imagesTouch for photo gallery  (NEWSER) – Looks like Ernest Hemingway's famous six-toed cats won't roam so freely anymore. Three federal judges have ruled that a Key West, Fla., museum housing the cats can no longer keep them without restrictions, the Christian Science Monitor reports. The museum will have to put them in cages overnight, install electric wire on a brick wall, build a higher fence, or employ a nightwatchman to monitor the felines. The ruling follows a long court battle over the museum's 40 to 50 cats.Hemingway let his cats roam around the one-acre ground where he wrote some of his best books in the 1930s. But after a museum visitor complained a few years back, USDA officials laid down the law, and the museum took it to court—losing on appeal with the latest ruling. The three-judge panel based its decision on an interpretation of the US Commerce Clause, saying federal officials can impose rules on the museum because it attracts out-of-state visitors.     Christian Science Monitor(Source Grid »)US • Great Finds

Just a little stupid! I'll bet there is no rodent problem there. Beautiful and well cared for --- no animal abuse here The compainer is a nutcase with nothing better to do. Long live the Hemingway cats!

Hemingway is probably turning in his grave over this!

These animals don't look like they are sick or starving, why don't they leave them alone!
