Coal-fired power plants provide nearly 50 percent of our electricity and, pound for pound, are the planet's dirtiest source of energy. Burning coal is the nation's top source of air pollution and toxic mercury, and is responsible for one third of the country's greenhouse gas emissions - nearly 2 billion tons per year.

A typical (500 megawatt) coal plant burns 1.4 million tons of coal each year. There are about 600 U.S. coal plants. Burning coal causes smog, soot, acid rain, global warming, and toxic air emissions. Ash, sludge, toxic chemicals, and waste heat create more environmental problems. Mining, transporting, and storing coal levels mountains and pollutes the land, water, and air. Coal plants need billions of gallons of cooling water and harm wildlife.

Thanks for your effort Beverly. I signed the petition, but I wish it had stated interest in the bank looking for opportunities to back renewable sources of power. The more renewable sources are part of the "cleaning up" program, the more I like it.

I also have some concern for asking to put coal miners out of a job right now. If we could only get the renewable industries up and going in the USA, it would give some alternative and new jobs for so many of us who need jobs.

My better half and I just made the switch to wind power coming from upstate NY. It will be a bit more...not much, and worth it, in order to be the change I wish to see. I'm excited. Not off the grid but on it... in a different way. Yea!
