On The Today Show, Matt Lauer hosted dietitian Elizabeth Ward to discuss how to make "healthy" food choices on a road trip. Virtually the only measure Ward used to evaluate what was healthy was how many calories is in it.She started out with breakfast at

Must be the dietitian for 60% of Americans. Tragic. A graduate of Hamburger U one would presume; surely that's the only institution which would certify someone who would recommend that sort of diet.

Thanks Suzybell. Okay, I'm not even a dietitician, but this one is a no-brainer. What planet is this woman living on? Did she get her degree from a box of matches?

Ingredients in McD's scrambled eggs.... From the article......."Pasteurized whole eggs with sodium acid pyrophosphate, citric acid and monosodium phosphate (added to preserve color), nisin (preservative). Prepared with Liquid Margarine: Liquid soybean oil, water, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, salt, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, soy lecithin, mono-and diglycerides, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), artificial flavor, citric acid, vitamin A palmitate, beta carotene (color)."

So, okay, I see two items on the ingredients list that I would even consider putting in my mouth......water and salt.

Pardon my logic but if you would not even eat eggs why would you care what others ate? Also note the dietician is recommending this for "road trips" you remember those, were you have kids impatient to get to the beach or where ever your going.

When I worked the only fast food I ate was McDonalds Egg McMuffin and Coffee. I ate one everyday, my cholesterol was 140. I guess the point it am making is why are we so obsessed with other peoples choices? I certainly agree you have the right to consume what you feel is best for you and your child, I agree everyone should know what is in the product you purchase but after that it's on the consumer.

Its like hot dogs, anyone who thinks hot dogs are good for you is nuts, but then will the hotdog you eat on occasion with your family in a gathering that shares family bonding, tradition and fun really harm you more that the event helps you? Will seeing grandpa try to pile more stuff on his dog that dad can while you try to pile more than both of them do harm to you? I dare say no it will not, I am not a registered dietitian either but I am blessed with common sense.

Some of my fondest memories of my deceased mom surround food she would not eat. My Dad loved creamed limburger cheese in a jar, I am sure it was full of lots of really bad stuff, he is 87 and still looks for the product that they no longer make. As a child my memories are so strong about the stinky cheese, my Mom would gag and run around saying things like anyone who eats something that smells worse that my dads feet is crazy. It was a right of passage into manhood when my brother and I got brave enough to eat the stinky cheese while mom pretend fainted; we became men. It was more than a food product it was passed from generation to generation and since it was expensive (we were very poor) it was rare and so special that stinky cheese opened more doors of love and fun than a lifetime of therapy.

I dare say the point here is missed when we speak of road trips, especially long ones it is a time when a family is literally cramped into a small space and forced into interactive bonding, we make up games to pass the time, pick at our sister because she eats weird, when she picks back at us because we chewed our muffin and then opened our mouth and showed her to gross her out.

The key to health is moderation, if you eat 5 lbs of red meat a day, if you live of fast food your going to have medical issues. But if your on a road trip and you get the rare McDonalds or whatever breakfast that for all intent is not unhealthy why is it so wrong and why are people up in arms about it?

People scream that vegetarian diets are the healthiest diet in the world, but if that was universally true do you not think hospitals would only serve vegetarian verses offering it as a choice? Common sense and economics are critical in our diet choices, I agree organic foods are great but when your choice are a dozed ears of fresh reg corn for one price and a dozen ears of organic for 5 times as much and you have the responsibility of feeding your children with the budget you have. I dare say that 5 times as much price as far as you body and nutrition is concerned will show your paying for a word not food.

An occasional Egg McMuffin will not kill you. I am a Fitness Trainer and no I would not recommend junk food for anyone, but having worked at McD's as a young adult, I can tell you they use real eggs out of the shell, at least they used to. There are some healthy options out there at many fast food restaurants, one of the things I do with many clients is go over these fast food restaurant's menus and point out what would be good and what would not be so good for them. You just have to be a smart consumer.

I agree, Sharon. This is outright advertising promoting the very foods that are unhealthy and contributing to obesity in this nation. Sure, once in a while won't hurt. But these foods are addictive and the convenience is habit forming. TV producers and talking heads need to move beyond $$$$ and tell viewers the truth about fast foods and GMO tainted food.

Not only the food, but a lot of the containers and wrapping were plastic and other waste.
