Campaigners in Egypt say the problem of sexual harassment is reaching epidemic proportions, with a rise in such incidents over the past three months. For many Egyptian women, sexual harassment - which sometimes turns into violent mob-style attacks - is a

They really have lost the plot in Egypt - seems women are at risk whenever they venture out. The men are now hunting women like mad dogs - which they are. Lawlessness and chaos is now a reality. Thanks Xil

So now if your niqab is too tight you're asking for it?

Why don't they just man up and admit the real truth. As for muslim men in Egypt (and sadly many other islamic countries) "if you're born female then you're asking for it."

Why else do we see toddlers in hijabs many places? Because hijab-less toddlers are sexually enticing the men.

But lets stop blaming women. I wonder how some forced castrations for some of the worst offenders would impact this issue.

This is no surprise. Here are reports confirming this, and this is not isolated to Egypt but is common in all Muslim dominated lands:

According to a survey conducted in 2008 by the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights, 83 percent of native Egyptian women and 98 percent of women visiting from abroad have experienced some form of public sexual harassment . More than half the Egyptian women reported being molested every day. And contrary to popular belief, most of the victims of this "social cancer," as the Center called it, were wearing modest Islamic dress. Not all sexual harassment is physical -- besides groping women's bodies, grabbing at their clothing, and indecent exposure, it can also include blatant ogling, sexual catcalls, and stalking (Jeff Jacoby - Lara Logan and Egyptian Liberation - Townhall, February 21, 2011)

The British foreign office says Egypt is one of the countries with the highest number of cases reported to embassy staff regarding sexual offences against visiting women. (Magdi Abdelhadi - Egypt's sexual harassment 'cancer' - BBC News, July 18, 2008)

Monica, you mention about women 'asking for it' and that is exactly what a majority of Egyptian men said:

' 62 percent of Egyptian men confessed to harassing women and 53 percent of Egyptian men faulted women for “bringing it on.”( Desmond Shephard - Foreign woman stripped of clothes, assaulted, in Egypt’s Tahrir Square - Bikya Masr, January 25, 2012)

Every one of these societies where women are repressed, controlled and literally locked up like possessions the men become sex crazed and don't learn how to act around women. We see that here in the UK with new Muslim immigrant men who have been conditioned to believe that all western women are whores and make the most shocking comments, demands and physical contacts that no right minded western man would dare do.

We just read of a Saudi visitor to Wisconsin yesterday who attempted sexual assaults on 4 different women in the same neighborhood on different days. He made amazing comments and gestures to these women, coming right out and asking for sex and even exposing himself to one. He didn't act like what he was doing was anything at all out of place, but when the police did come looking for him he fled back to Saudi A where all women are kept locked up or under guard by male relatives. So, coming from these primitive repressive societies they think that free western women are all free for sex. That kind of background would warp anyone.

Here in Europe we have Muslim gangs assaulting and raping women without headscarves. They call them "Uncovered meat"! All the rapes in Oslo in the last 5 years have been committed by immigrant Muslims and some have even tried to use the excuse in court that Islam gives men power over women and women who go out uncovered are asking for it.

What century is this???

Whoops. Monica, I just realized the problem with my comment to you is that people might think you are KIDDING. Unfortunately, the disgusting truth, as we both knows, is that ISLAM PERMITS GROWN MUSLIM MEN TO RUB THEIR PENISES ON BABIES/INFANTS.

No doubt that this will be a great boon to foreign tourism....

That, and the chants of "ISLAM IS THE ANSWER" as the new Muslim Brotherhood government doesn't seem to be able to collect Egyptians' garbage as it collects in the streets.

The Prophet died in 632, which is some 1,390 years ago and yet some Muslims do not seem to have been able to follow follow the teachings to be found in thei Holy Quran. it is not permtted to show disrespect to women or to assault them. Likewise, it is a crime to murder a woman because she refuses to marry a person chosen for her by her parents or in some other way has stained her family's honor, There is a system of law (sharia) that regulates many aspects of life and there are courts of law. Harming a living creature is also not permitted, since every living being has been creating by the Deity who is compassionate and all-merciful, two qualities which we should all emulate. And yet in Turkey and other Moslem countries, animal abuse and cruelty is commonplace. Despite this, there are people there who love animals and seek to help and protect them, often poor women in the countryside as well as highly trained vets. I don't know enough about Egypt or any other Islamic country to be able even hazard a guess as to why such outrageous behavior is prevalent. Perhaps it is socially sanctioned in the same way as segregation was in the South, where some places , I believe, even had laws forbidding marriage "across the color line". Perhaps somebody who has lived and worked in a Moslem country could enlighten us?

@ Barry

"I don't know enough about Egypt or any other Islamic country to be able even hazard a guess as to why such outrageous behavior is prevalent."

The answer to your little conundrum is that you don't seem to understand islam or it's prophet. You said that, according to the koran...

" it is not permtted to show disrespect to women or to assault them."

Have you read the koran? muslim males (I refuse to call them men) are INSTRUCTED to beat women, and women are considered to be half the value of a man.

From the koran:

[4.34] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

From the hadith

Mohammed said: "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)...I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence & religion than you...Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?...This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?...This is the deficiency in her religion."Bukhari 1:6:301

Because Allah afflicted Eve, all of the women of this world menstruate & are stupid."Tabari I:280

Abu Dawood:2142 - "The Prophet said: A man will not be asked as to why he beat his wife."

"Allah permits you to shut them in separate rooms & to beat them...Treat women well for they are like domestic animals & they possess nothing themselves. Allah has made the enjoyment of their bodies lawful in his Qur'an."Tabari IX:113

"Ali [Muhammad's adopted son, son-in-law, & future Caliph] said,'Prophet, women are plentiful. You can get a replacement, easily changing one for another.'"Tabari VIII:62 , Ishaq:496

Revered Islamic scholar, al-Ghazali, who has been called 'the greatest Muslim after Muhammad,' writes that the role of a Muslim woman is to "stay at home and get on with her sewing. She should not go out often, she must not be well-informed...she should take care of her husband... and seek to satisfy him in everything... Her sole worry should be her virtue... She should be clean and ready to satisfy her husband's sexual needs at any moment."

Didn't know that Obama had joined with Qatar to bail out the Muslim Brotherhood to the tune of ONE BILLION DOLLARS..........apparently because Egypt per se is experiencing fuel and food shortages. Now, how much do you think will go towards addressing the problem of fuel and food shortages and how much will be spent on building up the M.B. military and aiding in the persecution of Jews and Christians!!!!

:Let's know forget, that Obama, who the first to throw Mubarak to dogs. Mubarak's wife fir Susanna for long time promoted women rights. Obama did not give Mubarak any support at the time when Islamists were taken over. I don't think he can claim that he did not know who will grab the power, after seeing Islamist revolts in Tunisia, Lybia and other places.

And we he really did not know, then this is another proof that he should take some union job, and not US presidency. There he will say "Yes we can" all the time, and everyone will be fine with that.

"even women who wear the full-face veil - the niqab - are being targeted.

"It does not make a difference at all. Most of Egyptian ladies are veiled [with a headscarf] and most of them have experienced sexual harassment.

"Statistics say that most of the women or girls who have been sexually harassed have been veiled or completely covered up with the niqab."

++++++++++++++++ So, apparently, just BEING female and in public is enough to justify "asking for it?" I see. Egyptian men are no better at controlling their sexual urges than any OTHER Islamic society....even the glimpse of a veiled SHAPE is enough to engender cave-man behavior?

And, since Egyptian women are known as

And....where's the OUTCRY from the "INNOCENT" Muslims we're always hearing about? Where are the Muslim leaders who band together to CONDEMN this behavior?

Funny....I don't see our resident DEFENDERS OF ISLAM, either! You know...the ones who leap up to call us "Islamophobes" for commenting on this disreputable behavior.

I might sound a little naïve, but I thought that was the original idea of the burqas, hijabs and vales. To protect yourself from the blazing hot sun, and a bunch of horny men (besides the anti-feminist laws).

These men need to grew up and be slapped in the face! They need to realize that women have a harder time in life almost as much as they do, because of giving live birth, because of being raped and violently slapped around (by men and politicians) and because they get spit on for having a governmental position (see Hilary Clinton as an example).

While America has yet to see a major female figure in power (like Catharine the Great of Russia, Elisabeth the First of England, Margaret Thatcher of England, Golda Meir of Israel, Indira Gandhi of Indi and Bhutto Benazir of Pakistan), we need to tell these men even in America to lay of our bodies too!

Im dissapointed with some of the comments on this article which I posted to create debate about sexual harrasment, not religion. As if the catholic church didnt have its share of uncondemned sleaze. This is about education and media, about comming of age and coming to terms with ones sexuality, about respect for sisters, mothers, grandmothers and daughters. Not to mention that the US risks getting a mormon running things with incidents like the ones mentioned in this article sure to be dismissed as minor. This is not an article to create division between nations nor spiritual devotion or incite the anger and hate I sense above and which is just as questionable as the harrasment. I bet many of you have never even been to a middle eastern country and know nothing of their lifes nor their people. Prejudice and harrasment used to inflict disrespect and disdain are made of the same steel. There are women in the west just as abused, beaten, harrased and repressed. Whats missing is civilised, concerned, mindful, gentle and kind males, all too busy playing war and machoman, taking their failures and frustrations out on women who have evolved beyond being dependant of such men out of plain need. It is a sad thing the strenght a woman brings into a relationship isnt seen as valuable and a source of mutual joy but instead intimidates the man to such extent ne uses violence or harrasment to regain "his" power. I also want to express that when I see a 14 year old teen age girl wearing skirts shorter than her arms in full makeup, heals, drunk on her knees vomining on the pavement outside nightclubs in western cities I feel pain and truly wonder where balance and education is going and wish parents of both young men and women would lead vunerable kids wiser worldwide and that media would be more responsible with what is aired at them as ideal.

Xii, nobody in US treats a woman as a property, non-capable of walking alone, driving a car or going to work. Nobody in US will assume a woman to be a whore just because she left the house.

Current women abuse in Egypt is directly linked to the Islamist character of the Egyptian government. Catholic Church has its issue - probably all mass people groups do - but nobody forces you to go there if you don't like them. Egyptians have to live now under Islamist rule, moving Egypt to Sharia, where women have no say and no rights.

Drunk girls is a price for the personal freedoms. No matter how revolting that view is, I would not want "moral police" to tell exactly how much makeup they are allowed to put on.

OK, let's forget the crap with "made from a rip", but in any event, those dudes must have forgotten their own rules there.

Messenger of ALLAH (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said :
"Take my advice with regard to women : Act kindly towards women , for they were created from a rib, and the most crooked part of a rib is its uppermost . If you attempt to straighten it ; you will break it, and if you leave it alone it will remain crooked ; so act kindly toward women ".[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
