The Albino Who Confronted a Witchdoctor

World  (tags: Witchdoctor, Albinism, Africa, Magical Powers, Killing, Body Parts )

Across Africa, in countries such as Tanzania, Malawi and Ebongue's own country, Cameroon, there is a belief that people with albinism bring luck or have magical powers. This has devastating consequences for those with the condition.

A very courageous man to return to this ignorant environment.
Trump needs to show me his birth certificate to prove that he wasn't born in Cameroon.

Wow, what an interesting but shocking article. It is sad that people are getting killed because of superstitious believes. AniMae says it all. Thanks for sharing.

Education is fine if one hears/reads it first. Once the false ideas are implanted education is less effective, because people do not believe the truth. Especially when one is so invested in the falsehoods, and I don't mean just the witch doctor. I mean the whole culture that is dependent on sacrifice to solve everything. Yes, Stephen is very brave indeed. Trish, are you sating Trump is an albino born in Cameroon whose brain was sacrificed when he was a child?

They are lie there rhinos of the human world. I once again say that human intelligence is an oxymoron and the people there are proof of that. It must be a very scary thing to be an albino there. You never know when someone will kill you for your body parts. Ignorance is a dangerous thing.

Ebongue's story isn't one evoking pity but rather how his fear became his strength. I admire this man for wanting to make the most of the life he has been given. Facing his greatest fear meeting the witch doctor was really a triumph that will propel Ebongue for the rest of his life.
Thank you Derek for caring2share this news story with us.

Thanks Derek. Talk about racism! In Africa albinism occurs at a much higher rate than in the rest of the world. Somehow superstition promotes the ideas that albinos are either good or bad luck. Ebongue showed a lot of courage in returning to confront the witchdoctor. As the interview showed there was no movement of his beliefs or empathy. Horrible things are done to albino individuals, especially children. Some of the children whose hands and arms have been hacked off and threatened with further 'harvesting' later on, have been given refuge in the U.S. or Canada. The Global Medical Relief Fund in New York helps children get custom prostheses. The Canada-based group called Under the Sune Sun also provides refuge and assistance.

So much for 'tradition'.

Thanks for keeping this in the news. I posted a story about this brave man who is doing all he can to educate people at the risk of his own life. I posted a petition on this 3 months ago but when I checked it that petition is now closed.

Excellent, but very scary article! How simply awful to be albino in superstitious cultures. I'm so glad Mr. Ebongue was able to escape and go back when he was able to help others with albinism. I truly hope people will get a clue, and stop killing people and/or decimating animal populations for their supposed powers. Mr. Ebongue's library is a great idea, but it sounds like the witchdoctors really need to search the 'net to see that what they are doing is hogwash, and mutilation and murder that yields nothing.
