I bet everyone reading this, or most everyone, is on facebook. Not me, or so I thought. I opened a facebook account shortly before our son went to Iraq because it was decided that would be the easiest way to stay in touch in touch with him. It was. After he came back home I decided that FB just wasn't for me, so I deleted my account. Before doing that, I went through my account and deleted everything line by line - including my friends. Then I deleted my account.

From time to time I received emails from FB using a former friends name to report something I might be interested in. I have tried to stop these emails but can't because I would have to sign in as member, which I refuse to do.

Recently I have started emails on almost a daily basis telling me about pokes, wall posts, etc., so I asked one of my daughters-in-law to check and see if I was still there. Sure enough there I am, with all my friends and any and everything posted to me on FB. My last post stating that I was leaving is also there.

The reason I am telling you this is because it may explain some of the astronomical member numbers, and also to warn you. You are on for life - like it or not. Just try leaving.

Once I joined FB I started receiving more junk mail than I had ever seen, plus I was receiving friend requests from some very strange people. Even I realized that with every keystroke I was inviting an all new and different problem.

This is just some food for thought and my opinion, but now my daughter-in-law is wondering what is going on.

Come on folks, how many members does FB really have?

No idea, Carrie, and that's why I am not on FB and won't be. Thanks for the cautionary tale. I believe that FB could become a platform for massive security from unsavory elements of all sorts both within and outside of the government.

Oh Carrie, I hate to hear this. I'm a FB member too and one of the reasons I joined was because a very good friend of mine asked me to join since she's no longer on C2. I have practically no pics but 1 on my profile page and my family's on FB. But I do understand about all those friend requests you get from ppl you don't know...the junk mail is terrible. Thnx for posting and warning us!! Sounds like FB doesn't have as many members as they claim...

Thanks Cal. I thought I was almost the last person around not on FB. Am going to check with a computer genius to see if I can get out of this mess! I really believe FB is a danger to us all for many different reasons.

Sorry to hear about your FB experience, Carrie. I can't say that I've had anything similar. The only emails I get from them are notications that I've requested in the settings, like when someone accepts a friend request. I haven't seen more junk mail. I keep my account visible to friends only and have privacy settings set to the max.

As for deleting your account, my understanding is that you can 'deactivate' your account or you can ask FB to permanently delete it. Deactivating it doesn't permanently remove it, but the deletion process does.... supposedly. Yes, I agree about the member numbers being inflated, but then so are Care2's. I guess we are at the mercy of these social networking sites. They are a business and more numbers look good to advertisers.

Hope you can resolve your problems soon as I know this sort of thing is an annoyance one can sure do without! Good luck!

Judy brought up a good point about security settings and I did have mine set so I received fewer unwanted posts on FB, but that did nothing to prevent the number of people FB sent my email address and other info. All those petitions you sign and all those things you like go into a data base designed to spam you.

By the way, I never did care about anyone's farm or cafe or whatever. That really was irritating. Had to get rid of all that stuff right away!

Carrie, check the Info for deleting here.. http://www.wikihow.com/Permanently-Delete-a-Facebook-Account

Not sure what you've already done, but hopefully this helps.

Also, forgot to mention before that I try to avoid anything that uses apps in FB. Those things grab all your info and that of your friends'.

Facebook...sad to say..I've been there, done that..and most disapointed in myself for that misadventure. It's the most invasion of ones personal info on the net in my opinion. They've sold every member out to one Corporations data department or another...and made a comfortable bed for themselves with Big Brother to boot. Have the cash...they'll sell ya whatever is on your page/pages to whoever wants to have regardless of reasons wanting it. Next to 'Google' they are problably the biggest sell outs of our info on their pages and those that we go through when surfing etc..... that the internet has ever known,to date. Together they spell trouble for everyone in the long run.....

I didn't know this until it was discussed on the comments section of the SPAM petition I posted at Care2. I know for sure that some of my friends at Care2 think they are deleted from here and FB. Nope, they are still on my Friend list.
Profiles are still up and showing. I use FB for posting petitions from here. I have to admit it sounded better before I did it. I really do not like Facebook. Huh, yeah that was directed to the "like" on Facebook.

As for the SPAM emails...every one in the universe seems to have my email addy. All of them and most I only check once a year.

Carrie, you're right. When I first joined I was dealing with a huge trauma in my life, and honestly I didn't want to get an email or post every time someone announced they were shopping at the mall or whatever. Most seemed interested in nothing really important.

I THOUGHT I closed that account. And it was nice for a while. Then my cousin wanted me to sign up again, because her hearing impairment made it hard to talk on the phone and she wanted to be able to communicate things to me she was sending to others. Reluctantly I opened a new account, and when I did, the other one REOPENED without me doing anything.

God only knows what these people are doing with all our info.

For fun, sometimes, I post something totally out of character just to throw "them" off. Likewise I also use a "bonus card" at my grocery chain that belongs to someone who's deceased so I can screw up "their" marketing research.

And I definitely avoid making comments on anything that asks me to give personal or friend info when I sign in to comment - It actually pisses me off that they ask - some news sources don't require this for you to comment or sign in w/facebook. But friends on facebook may be signing in and giving anyone your info.

It's really hard to have time to keep up with everything that comes with this. I did use all the privacy settings I could find, and if I'm asked to give info in order to make a comment, I simply don't make the comment.

That said, I do now have some very socially and environmentally active friends on facebook (on my 2nd account) that keep me informed -- along with a few who are sure to let everyone know every time they "sneeze."

The warnings have been out there for quite some time, I'm surprised that so many are surprised. All the tales of people 'trying' to delete their profiles and not being able to. Even if you actually get to a point where you don't show a profile page, are you really gone? There have been many concerns expressed on this question, because there is no assurance, only doubt.

I had a page, briefly, deleted??? it about 2 yrs ago. Because of what I experienced just attempting to leave Fb gave me a high alert caution and concern. I was told it could take up to 14 days to remove my account, I went back to check and it wanted to open up for me, I never went back. I hadn't put all the security in place, but they didn't have it available like they say they do now, questions weren't being raised quite yet. I received a dribble of friend requests for a short while, then nothing. I think I may have been lucky by leaving ahead of the curve. But then, I was barely there, and added nothing of particular interest. If we don't soon get that EVERYTHING we post and communicate is NOT private, we need to learn to breathe sand cuz that's where we've stuck our heads.

All these comments are causing me to make sure my FB activity is always kept to a minimum.. Runatik makes some good points. I don't know that there is any way to beat the FB monster. Petitions can be done, but don't think they'd care.

Also, regarding Kit's comments on Care2 accounts not actually getting deleted... I had an account here that I deleted in 2010, then rejoined in 2011. In rejoining I used the same login, just in case my old info was there, but it wasn't. I had to start from scratch.

Regarding the Paul Ryan monster, if that ticket wins, we are screwed, but on the good side, the FB issue will not seem so big.

A friend, who shall not be named, came back only to find her name and avatar are still listed. That was this year. I don't remember any one talking about this before. On my friend list there are at least a dozen people who are no longer here. I think some people come and make friends then decide this is not the place for them and just leave, not trying to take down their profile. I've not tried to remove myself from Care2, but I have tried to remove myself from FB.

Goodness - I only joined FB as a direct result of a plea from several of my favourite charities - and I now deeply regret it - the amount of spam I have had since is ridiculous! I never had any time for anything on there so there isn't much about me - but my basic info is a good start for all the surveillance of either crooks or big business etc - yikes. Carrie - I don't know if you want to, but could you use the 'block senders' option on your email if the FB requests are too bothersome, or do you want to know what they are up to (in so far as we are able!).

Have never felt the slightest inclination to join facebook. Care 2 is the only community I have joined. I have been living abroad for many years and was travelling extensively. I never thought of facebook as means of communication. Have always used Skype and found it more practical. Even with skype have adjusted the privacy settings and do not use my real name. Unfortunately we know that there is no real privacy on the internet, and the less information you have on it- the better. However, we must avoid living in fear as ultimately we have the power to control our lives, we just have to exercise it and not allow ourselves to be pawns.

I've got a FB account that I'd like to delete, too. Will check back later to see if anyone has the answer to getting rid of it. I'm tempted to create a new email address and apply it to my FB account (and nothing else.) And then, ignore that email address forever. I believe Google email accounts automatically delete emails that haven't been read after a certain amount of time, so there would be no maintenance or clean-up needed.

Carrie, I was on Facebook for a couple of years but closed my account two years ago. I don't miss it at all. Of my nearly 100 "friends" only two have found the time to keep in touch with me via regular e-mail. I don't text, am not on Twitter or any other social media, and it's okay - my life is moving on quite nicely without them. The people I really care about keep in touch via e-mail and telephone. And I have so much more time to do other things I care about - like reading books!

Joe, to completely delete your FB account, follow the instructions at this link: http://heresthethingblog.com/2012/04/20/permanently-delete-facebook-account/

Never joined FB and am very glad of it.
JUst did not have the interest to join even at the insistance from an old and dear friend

This I heard a few years ago that FB hired a bunch of security guys that used to be associated with
the bushy (dubya) administration.

Just so you know, Zuckerberg is a republican... you know, one of those "pukes"...
And, yes, I agree, Z is a twit... lol...

Yes, it is true that you cannot delete your FB account. You may try this freom Judy:

check the Info for deleting here.. http://www.wikihow.com/Permanently-Delete-a-Facebook-Account

or try the link in Anne P above for deleting your FB account.

Glad I am not in FB! It is an UGH site.

My problem is that I closed my FB account almost two years ago. I don't remember my password so I can't get back in to make the change from deactivate to delete. My nephew gave me several different links, but I can't get any of them to work for me because I can't remember enough info to verify my identity. so they say. I spent 30 minutes looking at pictures of people who had been on my friends list, and then trying to identify them from a multiple choice list. I kid you not! And the photos were ones on FB now - not when I was there. I bet you couldn't ID me from a photo! After all that I received a message saying I didn't give enough correct answers! Finally I managed to get to a place where I could reset my password. Woo Hoo, I was so excited! Guess what? They won't accept it - no reason, no message saying it is incorrect, just nothing happens!

That's the catch-22 of Most social network accounts - you Have to have your original username/password etc. to delete them & so many people don't! So ALL social network sites have inflated numbers - especially since many people just re-register with a New name/passord!!! I joined Facebook because one of my sisters who is totally NOT tech savy uses FB & wanted me to help her..so I did. Yes, it's a pain, but so is Care2 on too many days..I also use MyFamily.com, which is more secure but has it's own oddities..

I think FB and a lot of Social Networking is geared to the company's who run them. THEY are the ones who profit, by puffing the books, I think, and possibly fraud, I don't have the information to prove it, no one does. Get the point. People paying for advertisement space and it's the wolf in charge of the hen house?

I've been on it a few years, found a long lost good friend using it, have some other relative connections, and use it for two FB groups. I've never put any pics or info worth mentioning on it. For what I use it for, it's fine. Twitter I'm on but never use.

What great info I have received here! Unfortunately, my problem goes back to that original problem in 2010. Unknowingly I only deactivated my FB account. Even though I though I thought the account would be gone forever if I did not reactivate during the specified number of days, I was wrong. Live and learn. I have tried each and every one of your links and solutions at one time or another - all to no avail. I will just continue to delete ALL EMAILS FROM FACEBOOK!

I still think the SEC should know how FB inflates their membership numbers.

I also believe Zuckerberg is an A #1 A$$HO$E!

I once joined Facebook for a specific reason, meaning to cancel my acct within a few weeks. Did cancel it and did it the way they said to permanently delete it. Didn't work.

I've heard complaints about other social network sites that do the same thing just to keep their numbers up and get more advertising dollars. 'Though I've no knowledge whether the complaints are true or not except with my own experience with FB, the membership numbers're just too good to be true on most sites I've seen. Not honest.

Facebook BLOCKED my Account in May2010!!! When on FB, I had recruited more than 3,500 to my Animal/Environmental/Humanitarian Causes (OrangutanOutreach, OrangutanLandTrust, Don't Palm Us Off, JaneGoodall Inst., TheCove, Rapes in Congo, etc etc) I had more than 3,000 Friends & had made Donations for $635,00.
I LOST EVERYTHING as FB Disabled my Account (I entered the Care2 Community thereafter- June 2010, not 2009 as Profile says). FB Disabled my ACCOUNT because I was posting my Link to “my” Petition for Orangutans, Tigers, Elephants, Wildlife, Biodiversity, Rainforests, “Label PalmOil", for which I worked very hard, even 10 hrs/day, since when my UK friend Ryno Nel (belonging to my FB group) wrote it & I signed it for 3rd. FB considered it as a SPAM!! declaring I had violated their rules!! NO MORE Access opportunity, & No opportunity to open a New Account (so they warned me!!!)
As Palm Oil is used also to make Biodiesel, isn’t it more probable that the "PalmOil"/Oil/Logging/Mining/Fast Food/Food… Lobbies (Corporations) defend their Money/Greed Interests????
Actually: in the same days when FB blocked my Account, FB blocked also the Petition Against B.P. (the Gulf Disaster)!!! (Is it a “coincidence”????)
Anyway, even if they DISABLED me: my Orangutan Petition reached Total 6,445 Signatures, thanks to my new Care2 friends!! Afterwards it was awaiting decisions by the EU Parliament. On Facebook (Social Network, not Activists Network) people were less Petition-oriented than on Care2, where real activists are, according to me. Hugs!!!! michela.
