Arctic Ice Melt Could Mean More Extreme Winters For U.S. And Europe

The record loss of Arctic sea ice this summer will echo throughout the weather patterns affecting the U.S. and Europe this winter, climate scientists said on Wednesday, since added heat in the Arctic influences the jet stream and may make extreme weather

Oh Sierra Hotel India Tango (as an ex-boyfriend used to say!) - the only people who don't believe this are either a) victims of frontal lobotomies or b) Tea Party loons who always refuse to use logic and refuse to believe evidence - dogma is so much more 'fun'!

"The record loss of Arctic sea ice this summer will echo throughout the weather patterns affecting the U.S. and Europe this winter, climate scientists said on Wednesday, since added heat in the Arctic influences the jet stream and may make extreme weather and climate events more likely."

That is politically correct speech. This is NOT a "may" situation. It is a WILL situation. We are already seeing this and have been for years. An Inconvenient Truth predicted it and it is already happening. Extremes? Minnesota averages 60 plus inches of snow a year. March is our snowiest, wettest month, December and January our coldest. We set record high temperatures all of last winter. We got less than 8 inches of snow in two tiny storms which melted within days. We had a no winter, winter, brown ground the entire season. It never got cold. March had NO precipitation at ALL. In the middle of the month, we had a week that was in the 80's EVERY day, never before seen here and I've lived here all of my 63 years. It has been the hottest summer on record, with more 90 degree plus days than ever. Two days ago, we hit 95 in a month where 70 is a "normal" temperature.

Scientists are now saying that they believe it has gone to far to reverse, regardless what we do. If that is true, and it likely is since NO government, let alone the world is taking this seriously, life as we know it will end in a new human caused ice age in 200 to 300 years. Snowball Earth, when the entire planet was encased in ice 640,000 years ago had fewer ppm of CO2 than we have in the atmosphere now. If that happens again, land based life will disappear as well as ocean life that depends on oxygen. It will be thousands, perhaps as many as 50,000 years before the planet heals itself and life can get a fresh start on this planet. And WE did this, with our avarice, our greed and our incredible stupidity. It isn't may, it is NOW. I wish everyone would stop dancing around this like it is one possible scenario. The charts that were depicted in An Inconvenient Truth, through 2005, showed horrifying spikes in heat and CO2 levels as compared to other periods in the ice cores taken from the arctic glacier. At that time, it was something like 7 of the last 10 years that had been the hottest on record, now it is 14 of the last 15. We can't be ostriches, because there'll be no sand to bury our heads in, just ice. And those intervening years? Are going to be pure hell for our descendants. THIS is the legacy of 20th century homo sapiens. And it is disgusting.

We just won't help ourselves. Now we will suffer for it. Or should I say the 99% will suffer now!

Sea ice is important for the planet. It reflects some of the sun's energy back to space.

With more melting, there will be more feedback loops and possible catastrophe.

We humans should be cutting CO2 emissions as fast as we can and going for solar and wind energies to care for the planet.

When will we learn that we need to clean up our act?
