Someone should remind them that several states tried to do this once before--with less than stellar sucess. And did I read correctly that Oregon wants to secede just temporarily? What's up with that?

Oh, I get it. This is official "Talk like a Traitor" day.

Sounds like someone missed the "UNITED" in the United States. Sad.

People have to keep in mind that Obama won only slightly over 300,000 popular votes - smaller than the voting population of a single county in California.
Snuffy S. - read into what Oregon is saying...instead of being clever.

For Allan:
From the Nation,
Nov.9, 2012

"When all is said and done:

1. Barack Obama has won an overwhelming majority in the Electoral College, a daunting majority of the popular vote and a majority of the nation’s states—including most of the country’s largest states and states in every major region of the republic: New England, the mid-Atlantic, the Great Lakes, the South, the Southwest, the Mountain West and the West.

2. Barack Obama has won more popular votes than any Democratic candidate for president in history—except Barack Obama in 2008.

3. Barack Obama is the first Democratic president to win more than 50 percent of the popular vote in a re-election run since Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1944.

4. Barack Obama is the only Democratic candidate for president since FDR to twice win more than 50 percent of the national vote.

5. Barack Obama has, in both of his presidential runs, won a higher percentage of the national vote than any Democratic nominee since Lyndon Johnson in his 1964 landslide victory."

And I note a couple of the states went to Obama in their votes so a majority wouldn't want to secede...and the others all receive more money back from the federal government than they pay in taxes so they'd have less to make due with (i.e., either reduce services or increase their taxes). Here in CA, a good year is when we get 75% of what we send to the feds back--if these taker entitlement states left, we should be able to get that percent to become higher.

Thanks. Carrie, that's not all Alan is missing. He is missing a the left of his decimal point. It may be a typo on his part, but President Obama won by almost 3.4 MILLION votes, not 300,000 as Alan wrote, which represents almost 3% more than Gov Romney. Many of us were hurt after the 2000 and 2004 elections (particularly with the injustice in FL in 2000). We didn't call for seceding from the union (or committing treason). I suspect most don't know what seceding entails...just as most teabaggers don't understand they are being used as pawns by Big Oil.

Interesting but consider the source of where these petitions are coming from.

Wait'll the first horrible disaster & we'll see how long and how much they value their "independent nation" status!

Up here north of the border, we have had periods where Quebec has wanted independence from the rest of Canada. I don't think these States are thinking it through logically; it's much harder than one thinks to operate without Federal help. (The devil on my shoulder says, "Let them go!").

Is it not unconstitutional to secede from the Union?

"Update 5: Citizens in all 50 states have signed petitions for secession." Now, if that happens, there would be real competitive capitalism.

Joanne Dixon (38)
Wednesday November 14, 2012, 3:07 pm
Mary, no, it is not unconstitutional to secede, and no state has requested to. CITIZENS in 15 states are signing these petitions; none is from an actual state. And Florence, free speech in itself is not treason.

Here's a very thoughtful and constitutionally informed analysis:

I hate to tell the teabaggers and "sour grapes" fools, but the issue over secession was settled about 150 years ago.

You didn't see the democrats doing this sort of thing after Bush Jr. stole the election in '04.

People can't secede from the Union. They are not parts of the Union. States are part of the Union; but, as Snuffy accurately points out, when some states last tried that, they lost.

Strikes me that most of the signers of these farcical petitions do have one thing in common with the secessionist states in 1860. In 1890, the seceded (largely) because Lincoln wanted to free a part of the U.S. population; today's petitioners want to secede because that part of the U.S. population is free.

OH, how I wish 50% of the population had somewhere please to go! PLEASE LEAVE THESE NATIVE LANDS so that we can clean up the waters, soils, air, restore forests, buffalo, wolf, people and open spaces! Do your ancestors come from elsewhere? If so, return to your own homelands and leave us to our own ways again!

These people are a danger to themselves and others,
have no clue as to their country's history and should
be consigned to a psychiatric ward for observation and
possibly medication to help stop their delusional ideas.

The names of those who signed these petitions should be added to the "No Fly" list and the terrorist watch list in my opinion, because if they want so much to leave the Union, then they are indeed, part of a group who wishes to dismantle and undermine the Union. IMHO - they need to be watched...

Each state needs an OK from the other 49 states. Good luck with that. Let then waste time & money. We had to endure Reagan/Bush/Bush.

Agreed, Bonita - while I would be happy to get these people out of my country, as long as they are here, they should be watched. Crybabies and sore losers, all.

I guess FuxNoise and Limpbag need some fodder to cry about, so they're leading with this. If this isn't clear proof that the rightwingnut media industrial machine only serves to divide America, I don't know what is. Many of us have been saying for some time that those who are doing the most "finger pointing" should be looking at a mirror.

The 15 States: Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, Colorado, New Jersey, New York,
Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida,
Georgia and Oregon.

The sour grapes who filed for Sessession are in all 50 States.

Of the 15 States named above, a few of them actually gave the state to Obama by way of popular vote AND the electoral vote.

This simply reminds me that racism continues to be alive and well in ALL
50 States.

Let us not forget that the g o p pukes and teabaggers have used the filibuster to stall any real progress for the people in USA.

Ty, Carrie.
