Egypt Announces Cease-Fire in Gaza Conflict

The Egyptian government announced Wednesday night that Israel and Palestinian leaders in the Gaza strip have agreed to halt hostilities after eight days of Israeli bombardment of the enclave and hundreds of rocket strikes inside Israel.

Thanks Carrie. I hope that Sec Clinton can at least broker a cease-fire. This administration has been the toughest on Israel, and I hope it gets even tougher, as I feel its policies pertaining to the Palestinians and other neighbors are unsustainable.

Thank you Carrie. Right now the world is taking a deep breath of relief and will take an even deeper one after the critical next 24 hrs have passed. Let's remember, this is temporary.
One thing though, is already clear: Netanyahus goal has failed for now, he cannot claim victory and cannot present himself to his future voters as a winner. That is probably the reason why in his ceasefire announcement speech he needed to stress " "I know there are citizens expecting a more intensive military operation, and it is very likely that one will be required, but right now, the right thing for the State of Israel is to take advantage of the opportunity for a protracted cease-fire."

Considering Netanyahu's personal agenda, I am quite skeptical of this cease fire.

Note this from Haarez:" Netanyahu and Barak will find it difficult to explain why the right moment for a cease-fire was missed before the last and sharpest memory of the week of Operation Pillar of Defense became the memory of the bus on Shaul Hamelekh Street".

Around 18 rockets were fired in the first 90 minutes of the latest ceasefire, but hours later it appeared as if it was being observed by both sides.

Every one here feels much better today, especially those whose men were called up to arms. But if anyone breaks this cease fire, it will be the Hamas and not the Israelies.
