In light of the recent shooting in an Oregon mall and Friday's school shooting in Connecticut, it's worth it to look at the conditions that have made it easier to manufacture and market firearms in the U.S. Consider the following developments:

Now that is downright scary...people carrying guns to work (not police officers). What will happen next?

The Texas Legislature passed a law that allows those who possess a concealed carry permit to have a gun on a college campus and the Michigan legislature has passed a law to reverse all "safe zones" schools, hospitals, restaurants...etc. I wonder if Snyder will still sign that?

Having four grandchildren from ages 5 through 17 still in school , and a son and daughter-in-law who are teachers, I find this all quite frightening. Nothing will ever change unless we start that change right now! For most of us guns are no longer necessary for survival, i.e. food and protection from predators.

Those who possess automatic weapons, assault rifles, and personal handguns are adding to the increasing violence in this country. It is long past time for all of us to take a stand to protect our children from the ever increasing gun violence in this country.

Gun Control should be the USA's priority: stricter licensing laws, the prohibition on selling RPGs and mandatory practice hours yearly in a reputable club for those who do have a license.

God bless the little ones whose lives have been lost.

This obsession with guns is beyond my level of comprehension. I just don't get it when owning a gun is more important than the safety of our children, I just don't get it.

I have just signed this - don't know if anyone else will want to but the petition site on C2 has several -

Awful news from West Connecticut - I keep praying for all suffering so - the pain must be well nigh unbearable for them!

Kit B - I, too, am waiting to see what Snyder (Michigan) does now when he gets that bill on his desk after the horrific shooting in CT. I already think I know what kind of idiot he REALLY is...this will be something to watch.

As I wrote before, Obama is in for the fight of his life. This is an issue of state's rights. Rights that have to be federally dismantled.

Allan, you are right, but federal law does supersede state law.

Let's see, have a corrupt and oppressive and manipulative group like the NRA have so much money they control much in the gov't.,, use a twisted 'right to bear arms' ploy, play violence up in movies and video games for so long and make it so real that a gun is 'power' and 'cool', play it up with bigger and bigger guns, put millions and millions of guns into the hands of people who take millions and millions of drugs---nah, I don't see any problems or trouble arising out of that.

Pat A, thanks, I will go to the Petition Site also. I signed one for Daily Kos and another one, and this one, on White House dot gov, has collected over 100,000 signatures in less than 2 days:

Since the White House promises a response to any petition which obtains over 25,000 signatures in a 30-day period, I would say that is noteworthy.

Why is it easy? Because America is an industry of death

So, now the law is the same in all 50 states. Looks like everyone acted like lemmings and jumped in the river. The NRA is financially well supported by the gun industry, who only care about their profits. My husband decided to join a few years ago, (during the Bush years), and even paid some dues. My protests were carefully chosen, and mostly in the form of questions. It wasn't many months later after he'd received several mailings from them, as well as robo-calls....that he told me they were an industry without heart or soul and was discontinuing his membership, and speaking out against them.
He also agrees with me that the Assault Weapons Ban should be reinstated, gun shows should be banished, and those multiple clips shouldn't be manufactured. He was a bit of "a hard nut to crack" since he grew up in the South on several acres and hunting was normal for his family. His frame of reference for many years was firm, although he'd only purchased one, and went target shooting twice. So, it's locked away, without any ammo....kind of like his own "security blanket" but unused. I'm glad I let him discover the facts for himself; and with the recent murder of so many innocent babies, he feels special protection for our own young grandkids.
We are sick that "now is never the time" to discuss guns. We will force this conversation on those who are unwilling or brainwashed. We must show that the NRA is a bully that needs to be brought to its knees. We must continue to ask questions like, "Why do you need an assault weapon to hunt?" We must remind that when the 2nd amendment was passed, guns only used one or two bullets before needing reloading.
Since the NRA is so extreme, I will be pleased to be just as extreme in the opposite direction....and call for a ban on ALL guns in the US, much like what is law in countries like Great Britain. Perhaps, we can then meet "somewhat in the middle" and begin with that Assault Weapons Ban, moving forward from there.
