Mass shootings this year in Colorado, Wisconsin, Connecticut, and elsewhere have reignited the debate over gun control in America. Just how bad is the problem?

What has happend to common sense in this Country? Why are people so adamant and obsessive on this gun issue? I am really disgusted and frustrated by the ignorant explanations presented for not pushing for more gun control.

Informative and terrifying. Thanks for posting this map, Carrie - it brings the horror of gun violence into stark perspective. I'm glad to see there have been no shootings in our home state of New Mexico, but it's only a matter of time. We the people are no longer safe from gun-toting zealots - and they scare me a lot more than actual criminals.

Noted. Thanks Carrie. Just moving over the map made me cringe. I do not understand the mentality of these people who do not want gun control. Allowing more people to carry guns definitely is not the answer. Controlling the number of guns, especially automatic rifles and the like (I am no gun expert), might help.
What is wrong with those in control???? Are they that afraid that they can't protect themselves.??

Noted...thank you Carrie. For those saying we need more guns to end gun violence, I appeal to you to THINK about your choice. I agree with Piers Morgan...more guns will never end gun violence. The NRA is in this to make money.

My message disappeared. - The interactive map is a poem I was saying. Difference is big related to causes created by gangs. This is happening among middle to middle high class society. Why??? Many people is defending their right to have arms to protect themselves. Well, arms are there and, whichever the cause, this is a result. I was thinking that a DOUBLE (yes double) metal detector with cages and everything could help to protect the entrance in schools but if a bill like that of Michigan is accepted, there would be still developing, unmature kids carrying guns to school, in parks, in buses etc.... many of those kids with home problems, age related problems and dealing with hormonal changes. And, could you imagine in what the bulling problem could turned into? This is to cry about.

Assault weapons must go. Illinios wanted to pass a carry and conceal law. Now I am going to fight it.

Just looking at that map almost made me want to throw up. Enough is enough! We have got to stop with the violence, espeically gun violence and the hatred that's rubbing salt in the already infected wounds of this country. Thanks Carrie.

The reason that people are against gun control is because you can't control guns, you can only control people. The guns are out there already in the millions; most of them illegal. So why do people only want to confiscate the guns of honest, law abiding citizens while doing nothing about all of the illegal guns held by thugs in urban centers?

Every time you suggest putting metal detectors in schools or searching lockers, the ACLU and others swoop down and say: "Oh no, that would be infringing on the privacy of students." And every time that the police attempt to search thugs loitering in front of businesses intimidating shoppers, the same cry goes up of racial profiling and that the police have no right to search anyone. Well you know what? You can't have it both ways.

If I have to hand in my guns, then the thugs should have to hand in theirs too. Of course I made the fatal mistake of buying my guns legally and registering them. So now the police can track me down and confiscate them. Next time I will simply buy my guns from thugs and that way no one can track them and I don't even have to pay sales tax or pay to renew my pistol permit.
