A couple of weeks ago I wrote a thoughtful, well-reasoned column suggesting ways to cut down on gun violence in our ever more violent society. It proposed, among other things:

Thanks Carrie for the link to the absolutely excellent article by Donald Kaul. He did stir the hornet nest though and now he does know that the NRA is a domestic terrorist organization. Read and noted.

"•Repealing the Second Amendment and
•Declaring the National Rifle Association a terrorist organization and making membership illegal."
Really? He didn't expect to get a reaction to these words? I believe that no one needs an assault rifle but there are millions of responsible gun owners in America.

Michael, as the author points out "A bit of Satire".

Yeah amazing how when the un-PC use Satire they are given all sorts of grief but the "always" PC DEMS can do it and feel that its ok. Don't worry hypocrites.

I used to be more trusting, but since the U.S. is now violating the Geneva Conventions I think we've got to wake up and smell the coffee. Things have changed - the National Defense Authorization Act codifies violation of our right to due process, and assassination of U.S. citizens without trial is now "ok."

The Jews of Persia were armed to prevent them being killed by Haman. We would do well to be equipped to defend ourselves also. Look up historical disarmaments and see the pattern - Hitler disarmed the people, Communist Russians did also, do just a little research - it doesn't take much.

Good heavens! I guess he'll have to preface every article with "This is/ is not satire". You can't be too careful with the NRA- they've got automatic weapons! Selling Sarah Palin to the Taliban? That would be like O'Henry's "The Ransom of Red Chief"- in two days, they'd pay us double to take her back!

having an assault rifle will help you defend against a government attack? So that would work against tanks, jets dropping bombs on your neighborhood, drones searching for your sorry ass right outside your window, heat wave apparatus, sound wave apparatus that will fry your guts, and puncture your hearing that is already being worked on. Be paranoid, but get real. You ain't Rambo, you ain't James Bond and you ain't some bullet repellant avatar. Handgun may stop an intruder, may end your depressed teens life, may be a collector's item, but it isn't going to stop a swat team.

Laurie Greenberg--you say they'd pay us DOUBLE to take her back? Don't you think that's a little low?

The price, I mean. I think we should hold out for more.

Now we know why we are no longer safe. The NRA rules the world and they say guns of any and all types, including those on tanks, etc. So we had better get used to the guns and build some bunkers and home school our kids.

Carrie, and others, please Satire.??? Only intelligent people even understand the word, so that cuts out many Americans, especially gun owners. Satire and Irony both need a heightened sense of humour and a sharp intellect, both rely in their use, for a considerable amount of underlying truth to be contained in this form of sophisticated wit.

Satire and even irony is misunderstood by many...sadly...it is so much fun. Canadians love satire but the NRA doesn't like humour when directed their way...don't think that the NRA likes Canada much either...no hand guns allowed across the border. Yes, Tom Edgar...satire has its audience and the NRA isn't it!

The guy is so right!
Pres, Eisenhower once expressed amazement at finding out that 1/2 of our population is below average in intelligence. Now, we know what membership group most of those, especially the lower portion of that group belongs to, and it's not Care2.

I particularly liked John B.'s statement above, that the NRA is a "domestic terrorist organization". After watching clips of Alex Jones' meltdown on Piers Morgan's show, I think they all belong in strait jackets....exactly the people who shouldn't have guns. A bunch of bullies, as well.

I know there must be SOMEsane& logical members of the NRA "out there", but I haven't met a single one, personally. Watching the news, Gabby Gifford and her husband both say they are gun owners, not sure about members of the NRA, but I lost all respect for Charleton Cheston when I found out he not only was a member, was the President of the NRA.

I suppose in a world of idiots and the insane, the sane are the ones that will be considered crazy. Nice "shot" and you hit the bulls-eye.

Gloria H. !! Exactly !! If our Government really wants to take us down , there won't be a damn thing anyone can really do about it !! These people are idiots , thinking they can fight 'em off with their guns , assault weapon or not !

Star to Dale Overall and others - oh dear - the NRA really doesn't have a sense of humour - and when it comes to apparently threatening harm to politicians - these days people had really be sure that it is OBVIOUS that it is meant as a joke!

I hope that his call to repeal the 2nd Amendment was part of the satire.

Gun nuts are their own worst enemies. They do gun ownership a disservice by making it look as if all people who have firearms are kooks.

Noted and Read a great piece of satire. The members of the NRA have no sense of humor at all, these are real serious dudes, arrogant bullies, and frankly they were let to get too powerful and out of hand.
Thanks Carrie.

I'll thank Freya, Carrie , Dale and others for the "Greenies:" and approbation.here. I would like to add that I am the owner of three firearms, all licensed under the strict ownership laws of Australia. It used to be four but having a Lee Enfield 303 seemed silly when I have a Saiko 222. a 22 and 12 bore. After all I do live in the Bush and am required by law to eliminate feral vermin. It seems to me that Americans are more preoccupied with eliminating their fellow man that they see as vermin.(I recently travelled through the South). Why any person, living in a suburban environment, should have a personal weapon is beyond my ken, but then in Australia it is nigh impossible to legally acquire one.
