I Would Not Like To Thank The Academy: Oscar Snubs Over The Years

Ah yes, the Academy Awards. Never before has such a noble institution been so incredibly off-base. One can't help but wonder what amazing film or performance won't get the recognition it deserves in any of the upcoming ceremonies.

It was so apparent how politicized the Oscars became way back in the 80's when The Color Purple was up for best Oscar. Remember the "war" between Oprah and Whoopi back then....taking out ads?

Me thinks its easy guys ---if we the little people like a film or performance and are willing to pay good money to see it----it will not get a Academy Award.

Ah, I don't watch awards shows. Yeah, bummer, huh? I do sometimes wonder if a week ever passes by when there is NOT a show on where entertainers are patting each other on the back for something. What would the world be like if every industry did that? Well, I wouldn't watch those either, but it would probably be a better place here if we spent more time congratulating each other for our every day heroism and great service than carping at each other over nothing much. So, maybe, when the grocery cashiers of America throw their first big bash, maybe I'll watch that. Or the SPCA worker or volunteer of the year. That I'd enjoy for sure if they included clips of their "patients". :^) Just imagine a world where everyone was happy, even if just for an evening. Not sure black tie and ball gowns are necessary for the bike shop employee's annual celebration but I bet it would be fun anyway. :^)

I used to watch the Oscars with my daughter, honestly I don't find them very interesting. When Jon Stewart or Bill hosted the Oscars they were far more fun. Now it's more like peeking into a private party.

Sometimes I think we forget these are actors, just people doing their jobs. We don't give awards to the people that work for hours on an assembly line so we have cars to drive, buses to ride, homes to live in, but we go wacky over those who are paid extremely well for playing "dress-up". Some do this job very well, others seem to get the award because they have been around awhile.

The Oscars is the only award show I do watch, and sometimes I enjoy it ~ sometimes not so much. There are times when I am puzzled by who wins an award ~ like Cate Blanchett losing to Gwenyth Paltrow ~ then I remember that like most things, politics come into play. Still, it is fun to see the gowns ~ good, bad, and ugly, listen to speeches that are a lot like the gowns, and wonder "what were they thinking" :-)

The list of actors that I can think of who never won an Oscar are: Cary Grant,Chaplin. Mitchum, Clift, Hudson, James Mason, Claude Rains, Richard Burton, Gene Kelly, William Powell, Raymond Massey. I know their are others.

I refuse to watch any awards show whatsoever. It's hard to tell which I am more ambivalent about - them or beauty pageants and don't even get me start on romcoms or reality TV for that matter. Then again I don't watch TV, I download what I want to watch without any commercials. I watch what I want to watch; when I want to watch it. I also have a couple of large F books.
Comparing Cuba Gooding Jr. to Wm. H. Macy is like comparing domestic beer to single malt scotch or Black Seal rum. There just isn't any comparison. Macy is still giving A list performances even when in a supporting role today while Gooding is hiding in the direct to video bin along with Val Kilmer; although I did see Twixt and thought it an interesting, quirky little film. Maybe Kilmer can revive his career with a little kissing of the ring maybe? What, you don't think politics and favoritism don't have a part to play in selection of who wins? LOL

The last time I watched the Oscars was the year Denzel and Halle won. Boy, am I glad I saw that I was in tears of joy, and of pride for our country. I haven't seen any nominations since that led me to believe that show would be topped.

Like so much things are rigged. This is just people patting themselves on each others back. I don't watch. Maybe when all jobs are honored in such a way then I might. How about the endless sacrifice of what Nurses do? The real hard job Roofers have, or the jobs that are not glamorous but needed, like septic cleaning. Might we have a night of awarding homeless Veterans a place to live? Many of us work hard, do a bang up job at what we do, and don't even get paid enough for it let alone get awards for doing so.

OK, lighten up folks! I posted several items about movies and the Oscars for fun and a bit of lighthearted trivia. Get a grip and just enjoy it for what it is ~ Nothing earth shattering!
