Move over Welfare Queen. The Disability King is the new pet scapegoat for all that's wrong with America.Conservatives claim that disability rolls are rising at a head-spinning rate, which must mean that the country is filling up with very clever malingers.

Disgusting. Tell this BS to my husband who has SpinoCerebellar Ataxia, which is terminal, that he is a malingerer. Bastards. They know nothing of which they blather.

Oh, I am sure there are a small percentage who are gaming the system, that happens with all prograsms. But, they DO have a method to eventually screen them out. All they have to do is enforce them but they can't do it well now because of.....say it with me peeps.....BUDGET CUTBACKS. The Rethugs cut that which will make proigrams more efficient so that it looks like it is being run badly...that is how they get what they want. Doom anything that might work well for the people in order to gut it into oblivion....so they can waste that saved money on their own pet projects like....war, dromes, corporate welfare and CEO givaways to their donors. Makes me sick.

Sure as Terrie said there are some who game the system, but I have seen how difficult the process is to be approval for SSDI. One does not simply claim disability, most of the time I have observed long waiting periods numerous different doctors agreeing on the diagnoses and only then can the benefits be received.

Reagan's welfare "Queen" was fraudulent, it was proven beyond a doubt that very few people could or would attempt to game the system to that extent. I think with all investigations we find the same is true for Social Security Disability, it's a convenient scapegoat that many on the right are eager and willing to bite that bait.

Employers can refuse to accommodate persons with qualifying disabilities if it is too expensive to do so. The data on recession lay-offs indicated those with disabilities were disproportionately terminated. The same financial grounds can be used in not hiring. Some of the most prevalent disabilities previously accommodated were work injuries like repetitive motion injuries. The average SSD payment is about $1000.

As a person who is disabled, I can testify to the fact that in order to qualify for benefits, you have to jump through months and months of hoops, undergo I can't even remember how many different tests, have a mental evaluation, see state chosen doctors, and even then you are not guaranteed benefits. It is a long, arduous process and I cannot imagine very many people willing to go through all of that just to get the very small once a month benefit you will receive if you are actually granted benefits. Yes, there are those who do, but it is a very small percentage as most are weeded out. As usual the Repuklicons have to find yet another reason to attack something they cannot control.

Am disabled and I can attest to the fact that process is months long, tiring and it is not easy to be approved. I thought that I would NEVER be approved as I waited and answered all their questions.

This really is another PATHETIC conservative attack! How low can they go? I see numerous TV ads by attorneys offering to help people get disability insurance...that tells me just how difficult a process it is. The far right wing would do just about ANYTHING, including, stooping as low as they can go, to "disable" the Liberal party!

The great and powerful Muckity-Mucks can afford to send $155 mil to Syria but they can't help the people of this country when they are truely unable to work. Disgusting!

What this really proves is that the entire republican party actually believes what Romney said about the 47%. That wasn't a slip of the tongue or an off the cuff comment, it was and is republican ideology. Mean-spirited, completely untrue and class warfare (one of their favorite tirades) of the first order. The 1% are pure, everyone else is leech living off the blood money of the wealthy. Didn't fly in the election, doesn't fly now. But they can keep it up if they like because a majority of Americans were mightily offended by those statements last year and still are. These are subsistence level programs, no one gets rich on them, as Kit pointed out the "welfare queen" is nothing more than a myth, but as the republican party is prone to believing in myths of all sorts, it is hardly surprising they cling to this one. Which explains why their base is shrinking faster than the Greenland Ice Sheet. And why, in the near future, they will be relegated completely to the scrap heap of history as the anachronisms that they are.

I love it when people can just say whatever they want & the Media runs with it. If you have no other income Social Security can just starve you out while you wait for approval. And even with undisputed proof & a lawyer to back up your doctor(s) statements 1. You can't even apply for the first 6 months of disability, 2. when you do get to apply it may take another 3-6 mo. to get approved, 3. even if you are approved you will only get back pay for the time it took AFTER the first 6 mo. and 4. you are not eligible for Medicare until 18 mo. minimum after the date of injury or disease onset. Plus there's Yearly paperwork to re-prove the disability.
So I believe the ONLY fraud comes from Insiders who know Exactly how to game the system, just like ANY Government program is usually ripped off - from Welfare fraud to BLM, INSIDERS are the only ones who CAN get away with fraud!

If memory serves me right, Ronald Reagan coined the term 'welfare queen' after he made so-called welfare fraud his top priority as Governor of CA and aimed for POTUS. The primary fraud was in the costs of going after it being exponentially more costly to the taxpayer than the actual costs of the small amount of fraud there was to find.

I am 100% with Yvonne on this: the only people gaming the system are insiders and already rich. The poor are not gaming. I am a person who can stretch a coupon to the point where (I have to say very, very seldom) occasionally a store has paid me to take something, but I could not game Social Security and would not want to try.

But many Republicans are more than willing to pay more to stop someone from receiving one penny of benefits inappropriately, though it might take thousands of dollars to prove it. They consider this a moral principle. It is a principle for which I would have a lot more respect if they would apply it equally to the rich. For some reason they don't think the rich need to steal. It has completely gone over their heads that the rich are rich BECAUSE they steal.

You cannot currently send a star to Gene because you have done so within the last week. SIGH....

Exactly, Yvonne. It is infinately harder to neigh on impossible for a poor/disabled person to game the system, only insiders have the backup internally to get away with it.

Tried to send stars to Carrie and Terrie and Gene and Tamara and Kit and Angelika and loads of others - but seems I have given you all stars in the last week so the computer won't let me - sorry, as you all really REALLY deserve stars for your posts (a few got through to others)!

I do so agree - the Right need things to HATE - and create stuff - like the tripe they talked about the alleged voter fraud (all of it was theirs) and so on - they are hate-filled idiots - the poor saps and 99.9999% of those who have fought their pain-wracked way through the maze of govt regulations to get this benefit deserve it!

I notice they always pick on those who are suffering and need help the most. How could they ever pick on the defense industry...profiting by murdering people. How could they ever pick on the Wall St. Banksters who manipulated the system and stole retirement/pension funds and city/state funds....only to enrich themselves even more. No--they never pick on someone their own size....this makes them bullies. Soul-less bullies. I guess the term CONservatives says it all!

UK Disability Benefits are awrded with a guidence of what the law says the amount you need to live on is.

Our governments say the cost of the Welfare for the disabled is rising to such a level they can't give us what they say we are entitled to. It's no wonder the cost of the Disability Welfare is on the increase when more and more of our troops are returning from ever worstening Global Conflicts. If our governments don't want to meet their resposibilities they should stop trying to police the World with their "self rightuous" views.
