They trained their eyes on the mountain that smoldered in the distance as they carved a path through a forest choked by fire and drought. The ground crackled underfoot. Packs sagged from their backs, heavy with the gear frontline firefighters must carry:

I can't add much to the comments on the actual site, except possibly that I guess some people cease to carry insurance on their home when they own it outright and no one is twisting their arm. Then, if the home is destroyed, they become dependent on people who actually have much less in money than they but considerably more compassion. I have worked in property insurance and no company I have ever worked for or heard of wants anything but for their customers to have adequate insurance so that they can start anew.

Noted. Thanks, Carrie. This was a terrible tragedy, and it seems the problem was a combination of treacherous winds and bungled communication. I'm sure they'll get to the bottom of it, and changes will result. Condolences to the families of these brave firefighters.

Rest in peace, brave rescuers! My heart goes out to their families!
How many more disasters will we see and subsequently loss of lives, it's getting worse with extremities all over the world... and yet, we still continue getting on with our lives as if everything will be alright, SAD!

Fire crews should not be placed in mortal danger to save the homes of idiots who build in the forest! The same is true for all those who settle on flood plains. Insurance rates should be astronimical for these people and probably are -thus the no insurance. the sad thing is that we all then take the responsibility for their errors; it is not fair!

The Arizona losses hurt and were indirectly caused by selfish people! Eeerily similar to the 1940s disaster involving smoke jumpers who were remembered in the wonderful song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce_YKPQrLT4

I hope they find out what went wrong so they can avoid it happening again but I am afraid it will bring very little solace to those left behind. This was just a terrible tragedy for the families of these men.
May those brave men RIP.

Whenever we hear of terrible tragedies like this we are reminded of how firefighters put their lives on the line every single day. It's something we should never forget.
