Watch this congressman face the same choices as his grocery budget gets real tight when he tries to live on the amount that his fellow elected officials want folks to live on.

I do give him kudos for trying this out - they all should. I suspect it would make a big difference if they did.

Alas, the ones who need to do this are not the ones who are trying it. I agree with Arielle, they should all be FORCED to do this.

I agree, let them all live on just food stamps for a month or two. Not one cent more than is allowed by the SNAP program. I don't hear about how good beans and rice are, not when that is your main meal each day.

he will suffer nutritionally and probably gain weight from cheap sugary foods and starches.

I totally agree with the above comments. But I'd like to see them try living on food stamps for an entire year!! BTW I thought 'De Fazio' was a last name the writer came up with for Lavern, on 'Lavern & Shirley.' I had no idea there was actually 'De Fazios' out there which makes it very cool!! I'm not trying to belittle this post or the fact that ppl struggle daily on food stamps. Before I retired, I had to take the city bus downtown to get my food stamps one day and when the bus finally pulled us up to the food stamp place, I went inside and waited in line. On our way there, I saw a woman driving a red 'Magnum car' and she was wearing a black fur coat. To say my mouth fell open when she walked right up to the food stamp window, by passing all of us, and getting her food stamps then leaving to get back in her Ferarri--Magum car--is putting it mildly. By the time I got up to the window, I was steaming mad. You could see the steam shooting out of my ears. I mentioned it to the lady who helped me sign by putting the paper on the clipboard for me and coming out to me to hold the clipboard while I signed, but she just shrugged her shoulders and said it was her job to give out food stamps no matter who came in.Oh, did I mention the black fur coat and high heels Ms. Gothrocks was wearing...? Sheeesh!! TY Cariie.

I think every member of Congress should have to live on food stamps for at least a year.

Very commendable action of this congressman! Maybe one person could live of that amount if they were able to produce they're own fruits/ veg eggs and protein!

Republicans create poverty and then spit on those that fall to their deeds.

Scum of the earth. Tax the rich!!!

This is a concept every one in Congress needs to try & really live it for an extended period of time, so they can "Own It!" Thanks Carrie!!~

They should have to do it, all of them till they get a meaningful bill passed for the ones that HAVE to live on them all the time! We'll see how long that takes to get done then!!

A very commendable action. I wish more congressmen and women would do something like this; it might give them a better understanding of what low-income families have to deal with every day.

I think everyone in Congress should be paid like an Army private, eat only in a proto mess hall and work 12 hours a day and learn humility.

Then the entire Republican party and a quarter of the Democratic party would cease to exist, which would be a great thing!

Until we get Representatives that are truly working for THE PEOPLE and not the Corporations or the likes of the Koch Brothers, then few will do as he did. We still have SOME in our Government that try to work from a good place but too few.

The Koch Brothers and the other Plutocrats don't really CARE how we eat or IF we eat. They do not care if we live or die. They only need so many of us to do their bidding, the rest of us are expendable in their eyes. We cut into their bottom line profits if they must increase their taxes to pay for programs that feed the poor or the Elders who are consider no longer of use. They will pay their workers as little as they can to get work out of them and think nothing of it how they eat. Keep jobs in short supply and there is always another body to fill their spot if they get ill and leave.

Don't kid yourselves any longer, this is an outright war upon anyone that isn't considered one of "them" and if we can't buy their items it's a global economy now, if another Country does better for it's citizens they'll sell it there, they figure they don't need us.
Why Aren't Americans Fighting Back They Should Be
Where The Hell Is The Outrage

Remember, food is NOT a luxury, it's a requirement to LIVE. When you have a system in Place that is looking to cut out FOOD to the people 60% who are children and Elders, then it's more than time to stand up and become mobilized. If not now then when?

Noted. Thanks, Carrie. For all the people who are not starving, thanks to food stamps....there are so many more who don't qualify because they make just a bit too much in one column or other. I have read many stories regarding those who were formerly unemployed and receiving food stamps, only to gain employment and lose food stamps and not be able to feed their families...so they had to quit their jobs. This is absolutely true...in the so-called wealthiest nation on earth.

The day I got really angry was the day I read in an online publication that the banks are actually making money off the food stamp credit cards.
