What's wrong with people? How can anyone slaughter a horse?

You know, horses have always been my first love, and "horse" was my first word when I was a child, but... what really is the difference between slaughtering a horse (or even cat/dog) and killing cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, goats, rabbits, octopus (super intelligent), and so on?

Why we love dogs, eat pigs, and wear cows

As an ethical vegan, I am against all animal slaughter - but horses hold a special place in my heart. My sister and I took riding lessons as kids and were totally horse-crazy. Humans have a special connection with horses and eating them is akin to eating the family dog. As a resident of New Mexico, I am horrified that my state may be the first to reinstate horse slaughter at the so-called Valley "Meat" Company in Roswell. I read recently that the flesh from young, healthy horses is most prized in foreign markets - so guess which horses will be killed at Valley? Probably young, healthy wild horses rounded up on federal lands. Supporters of horse slaughter plants say that these facilities are needed to "process" old and infirm horses - but slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia. Horses suffer horribly on the way to and during slaughter. Makes me sick to even think about it. I would rather see an old, sick horse shot in the head to end his misery, then trucked to Valley "Meat" where uncaring humans will make his last moments sheer hell. I pray that NM Attorney General Gary King can stop this atrocious slaughter and shut down Valley "Meat" once and for all. A recent national poll showed that 70 percent of Americans support a federal ban on horse slaughter. Kudos to Robert Redford for joining in our fight!

It is said that when horses are taken to these slaughter houses they sense something is wrong and are filled with fear. Also, the way they are slaughtered is less than humane. We cannot allow this to happen to these majestic creatures! Anne, I wish I could send you another green star today.

Don't mean to keep beating this (horses are still my passion) but ALL animals sense something is wrong on the way to the slaughterhouse even if they've lived an absolutely miserable existence prior to that outing (as most do).

And what is humane slaughter? Who actually gets that?

Just hoping people will give some thought to things accepted for some animals but not others.

This absolutely makes me sick to think of this plant opening in a state that I dearly love. I've loved horses since I was a child. They've given so much to us and to end up as ground meat is beyond sickening. I've owned horses and the thought of the wild mustangs ending up here is just beyond words.
Since Obama doesn't seem to be doing anything about this situation someone suggested that maybe it should be served at the White House. I thank Robert Redford and former governor Bill Richardson for working on this.

"If the long list of animal welfare groups does not prevail in the federal court hearing on Aug. 2, Valley Meat Company in Roswell, NM is ready to begin equine meat packing operations as early as the following Monday, Aug. 5. Responsible Transportation in Sigourney, IA could begin horse slaughter in an old Louis Rich plant just as quickly."

Thanks Carrie for posting.

This makes me sick and it's all about money for these companies. They'll be shipping to countries that consume horsemeat and supplying it for non-human consumption here. I hope this can somehow be stopped and thanks Carrie for keeping us up to date.

With all due respect (Syd H), I would like to possibly give you an answer. Thw War Horse in all sense of the word was not the "war cow", "war pig" or "war chicken", although all of these animals also played a part in feeding the troops. The Kentucky Derby, Grand National and other events that thrill many are the result of the horse. I no longer condone or follow these events solely because of the injuries and callous disposal of the horses if they do not win or show. They most likely go to slaughter. Also, the nurse mare foals become victims of this industry. On the more "classy" and "expensive" websites for the elite, you will see "pony skin" purses, shoes etc. This is the results of foals being slaughtered. The are a great delicacy in many countries and even shipped alive so the meat is fresh. The Pony Express was just that..not the "cow express" or the "pig express". I have never seen a mounted policeman on a cow. Horses have served mankind in a much more intimate way, as a companion, a work partner, as entertainment. The beautiful Lippizans for example. In my Humble opinion, mankind does not deserve the gift of the animals, any of them, but mankind is a self-centered lot. The chemicals given to a horse over the span of it's lifetime are carciogenic to humans, that is a fact. That is why I am highly concerned for the 50,000+ mustangs in BLM holding areas. Have no doubt, they will be the first to go. They will suddenly be a "burden to the taxpayer". These horses have not been "managed", they have been exploited. Also, the chemicals and hormone-based drugs given to the factory farm raised animals should raise much concern for people, but they keep slugging the meat down. I'm off my bandwagon for now, but I mean everything I have said. Horses are not "food animals". And instead of letting folks like Slaughterhouse Sue and Dave Duquette (who are licking their chops at the thought of slaughter) take the center stage, I am hoping that more folks, like the good people I see here, stand up and say NO HORSE SLAUGHTER! They desperately need your VOICES, not your sentiments. Please find out more, google..find out the TRUTH. There are plenty of petitions to sign to stop this madness.

DO NOT SLAUGHTER THESE MAGNIFICENT CREATURES. Horses are not for human consumption due to the drugs that they have been given over the years. This cannot be allowed to happen and why isn't the President and the USDA stopping this.
