Watch out humans, the cat invasion has begun. On one island off the coast of Japan, four-legged felines outnumber residents and are driving the tourist trade. Nina Strochlic reports.

It sounds as though resources on the island guarantee the survival of the cat population ~ though without human contact they will eventually become feral. With the amount of publicity and tourism the island gets, let's hope people will continue to inhabit the island and spoil the kitties.

A very loving co-existence between humans and cats. The cats look very well cared for, but as the human population is ageing and the community seems doomed, I hope the cat population decreases with the size of the community so cats won't have to starve and suffer when the last people have left.

I remember seeing an article about this special 'cat' island. In March 2011, Japan was hit with a historic 9.0 magnitude earthquake, and the Miyagi Prefecture, where Tashirojima is located, was badly shaken by the tsunami that followed. Luckily, the famous island emerged unharmed and the cats were spared. "The people and cats are safe but short of food. If I remember correctly they had to bring people food and lots of cat food in by helicopter.
Love the photo in this article. Thank You Carrie.

Great story, but some common sense has to emerge. I don't know if there is a vet on the island (doubtful), but for the sake of these animals, a t/n/s program needs to be put into place.
It's not uncommon for parents to mate with grandchildren. This only multiplies the problems.

This is the only good thing I have heard about Japan. Cats don't slaughter whales and dolphins.

Oh my gosh - I would love to live there. But, I am one of the older generation.

They need to get some younger people who love cats to move there and keep up the tradition!
