Tokyo has been named host city of the 2020 Olympics, beating out Istanbul for the win. But hold the applause--the games are cursed! "It's a great party, but you're not going to get back what you spend."

Thank you for this very eye-opening article. I had heard something about this before but never really paid attention until now. Sounds like Putin is doing what every other Olympiad country had done - over spend, displace people, and put on a window display for the world...Really hope Japan learns something from these tales.

I do hope Tokyo (Municipal government) and Japan (government) would take this into acount and wisely prepare for the event. Don't construct new stadiums but renovate already exist and operating ones, etc. Well, we already have some good sports facilities..

I agree with this article of host cities over spending on the Olympics. Here in Canada, The Games in Montreal were great, but they over spent more so than any other city ever. But I will blow my horn for the winter Olympics in Calgary, AB Canada that came in way under budget - why - because it was all run by volunteers, and they were congratulated at the end of the games by the Olympic officials. That wasn't even mentioned in the article!
Thanks Carrie.
