DRUNK WASPS: Just When You Thought They Couldn't Get Worse

The British Red Cross is warning citizens of a record number of wasps in the UK that are out of a job. That is, their queens are fully supplied with nectar, leaving worker wasps to do nothing but laze around and drink fermenting fruit.

Allergic to bee venom here - this is scary, as I've seen the nastiness of wasps...they were sober.

Now the xenophobes have turned on wasps. I surprise they left the bees alone, I can't imagine they are much different.

I've noticed around here that the population of hornets and wasps has been increasing every year. Apparently whatever is killing the bees is not affecting them.

We have had problems with wasps. This summer my other half was mowing the lawn and I had hung a bird box on the fence which was very close to a tree. So he was squeezing by and suddenly he felt a real zap to his right ear. I was worried as I didn't know if he is allergic. Turned out he wasn't, but he had a big fat ear for days. We had to spray the inside of the bird box and then flood it out with water. I had never seen a bird trying to enter, thank goodness. Last year they were under the deck and would fly out in the cracks, so we danced around a lot.

It's a pity the article doesn't explain why the queens are filled to the max with nectar and the worker wasps are more drunk than usual. Could it be because there are less bees to compete with for nectar? But that doesn't explain why they are so agressive even when sober. Perhaps the poisons that are killing bees is just like meth to them. It affects them but they do not die before their time.
