Are they crazy? People have less and less money to live from. How can they dare to cut $40 billions? Stop wasting money on wars or even space travel, and help all the suffering people.

The slashing of food stamps to the deserving is just cruel, and stupid. The entire program has to be re-vamped so those who deserve it, receive it.

They won't be happy until everyone is living in a homeless shelter and starving to death ~ everyone except them and their rich friends, of course!

Add a last minute Rider in a must-pass bill that attaches it to a 90% salary cut for these aholes.

The only somewhat positive aspect was how close the vote was: 217-210

I did not like the Fox News report which they say they had all the politicians watching (HA). This in my opinion is criminal. People want a chance to work, so they can support a family - YEAH - but where are the jobs???? Mostly part time which means trying to juggle two jobs each day.
Like I said once before - do they expect people to go dumpster diving to find food for themselves and families. So many are homeless already - which I noticed the news does not show anymore. I dare one of these politicians to take three days off - live on the streets with no food stamps and see how they feel!!!!
Thank You Carrie.

Noted. Tax cuts for the wealthiest; no taxes for the NFL, churches, the Chamber of Commerce....but starve the poor. What is wrong with these people?! Don't they know they're acting like Marie Antoinette ("let them eat cake")? Are they aware of her outcome?

These are the politicians the American people have voted to represent them?!
How could they not cut foreign aid first and keep the American people first and foremost in their care?!

Cutting SNAP out of the budget is just adding insult to injury. Why don't they cut some of the pension benefits that
all the politicians receive? Seems they couldn't do without their little perks, that cost a bundle. thx Carrie

OK, so, we have people who make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, telling people who aren't as fortunate that their nutritional needs don't matter? I know of people who are living on less than $500 a month in their food stamps, barely surviving, eating maybe twice a day, & now they'll have to lose even more of that food money? This has been handed down by a bunch of bureaucratic fatcats who have no idea of what it's like to starve? Maybe these guy should give up most of their income & put it toward the SNAP program to help out indigent people. Maybe they should try to survive on water, bread, & ramen noodles for a month. Then they'll see just what they're doing to the American public.

Every penny Democrats spend feeding hungry children is a penny Republicans can't give to a billionaire.

This ridiculous farce is an attempt at petty tyranny. According to the (U.S.) National Institutes of Health, we already waste 40% of the food we produce. These fools want to see the amount of food waste increased--even as people are going hungry.

The crops have already been grown (or plotted for next year)--or are in the processing or distribution phases. By reducing SNAP, these petty tyrants will effect a waste factor of more than 50%.

I have received an email saying that people are going to try to eat all their food for the cost of $4.50 a day in solidarity with those who have (through no fault of their own) got to live on food stamps. (For any politicians whose staff may read about it - that means starting with nothing in your cupboards, just living on $4.50 a day for all food and drink... politicians would never even consider it! I think they should do it for a year).

I think Arielle is correct, nothing like a starving populace that feels they have nothing to loose to join the others in the streets. With the homeless, the foreclosed upon, the returning Veterans we ignore, the forgotten Elders that are also asked to give up more of their Social Security in this chain CPI, the neglected Disabled, all those who are already hurting and suffering.......sure just add some more pain and misery onto their lives.

After all we can't have the top 2% or so pay anymore in taxes. They might not be able to buy another Mansion in some far off land to go visit once a year. My goodness a few less trips in their yachts, maybe one less car in their elevator garage. We can't have that now can we?

No I'm sure the poor will not mind giving up another meal, if they eat two now let them go down to one, or eat every other day. Maybe they can give up living then the rich don't have to be concerned at all for the riff raff that they think so little of that they'd allow them to go hungry.

Maybe they just don't give 2 sh*t's that 76% of SNAP or Food Stamp households included a child, an elderly person, or a disabled person. These vulnerable households receive 83% of all SNAP benefit.

That is right DENY FOOD TO THE

CHILDREN

DISABLED

ELDERLY

All those who can least change their fates.........

If that isn't HEARTLESS......then I don't know what is.

Best speak out people, you too one day may find yourself disabled or elderly.

Also the future of our Nation is the children, and hungry children do not develop well in body nor mind.

RepubliCONs have NO education on History - or they could remember what happened to Newt & his posse just a few years ago! But History is probably not important to the Rich..even though Every Revolution concerned people who were starving, armies that were ill-equipped & unfed, and Governments who were supposedly "insulated" from the rabble. Guess we can just wait for that final straw..where do I buy Guillotine stocks? Think we get a grant to Build them? ;)

I must say that the ONLY thing my Governor, Quinn(D-IL.), has done that's even remotely Democratic is help implement Obamacare & has With-held Legislator's paychecks since July (his own as well) because Illinois has a billion dollar pension problem & NOTHING is getting done!

I have watched the discussions about this though the word discussion is a misnomer. For those who saw this "debate" on CSPAN, I got the feeling that every word spoken by the republicans was well planned. I kept hearing about the cheating and scams. Yet, when I look things up I find this is one of the more secure, of all programs. The card must be given to the cashier and only certain foods will be acknowledged.

This actually is mean spirited, Representatives in Congress know that the there is tiny room for error on this one, and still are selling the "Welfare Queen" as if it were true.

I also blame those who ride this train with those who scream - Cut, cut, cut....as a citizen and tax payer you should know better. Find the truth or believe the lies - one makes you a sucker.

As JL (above) mentioned, the final vote was 217-210. 15 Republicans sided with Dems. and voted against this bill. No Dems voted for it, but 5 Dems didn't vote at all. If those Dems had been able to vote, and a couple more members of the GOP might've been persuaded to also vote against it, the bill could've been defeated. Heavy sigh!

That anyone with a beating heart would of voted to take FOOD out of the mouths of CHILDREN, DISABLED, and the ELDERS should hang their head in shame.

Their actions are DISGRACEFUL!

Their actions represent the WORSE society has to offer.

As a caring public if any of them exist in your voting area you need to vote them out or you are as sorrowful as they are.

This is FOOD......FOOD.

To deny someone from having food, when there is no truth behind there being rampant fraud, and even if one should get it that shouldn't we do not cut off the food source to Children, Elders, and Disabled because of it.

This Leadership continues to reach new lows and this certainly is as low as one can go!

Debbie W., your profile page says you are very bright ~ an IQ of 120 ~ Wow, I am not impressed since you made a really stupid, ill-informed comment here. Perhaps you should take your IQ and use it to become educated in the reality of our society. Might I also suggest you think about the working poor in this country who are barely able to feed their families now, and how this is going to affect them.

Dandelion G. (383)
Friday September 20, 2013, 2:10 pm
My wording wasn't too good but for a few fraudulent cases that can be prosecuted, you don't take the food out of innocent children's mouths who have no control over their circumstances. The Elders have worked hard to raise the young now to be thrown to the curb?!? The disabled have enough challenges to deal with finding food to eat shouldn't be one of them.

There is absolutely NO NEED for this, NONE at all. We waste so much on military spending where billions go over to Iraq and other places to never be seen again.

Those who are bringing in hefty profits yet find every little loophole they can to avoid paying a dime more in taxes and pay their employees so little that they can't feed their families with. I don't understand them nor the writer just above me. I suggest she do some outside research and not just listen to the right wing lies all the time. Your failure to know the truth will cost children to go hungry, if you can sleep on that one then I don't at all know what to say. Food is as basic as it can get. Even if the parent was fraudulent the child isn't and they are at the mercy of the adults.

Very sadly noted...thanks Carrie. I hope that most people realize that as a result of this very cruel and absolutely senseless act by Republicans, Americans tax bills will go down exactly ZERO dollars. Debbie W...so it's laziness that makes you applaud this shameful day in our history, perpetrated entirely by Republicans catering to the Teabaggers...really? I wonder if you think women are lazy, because I certainly don't. I bet you didn't know that women are almost twice as likely as men are to receive food stamps in their lives. How about children...are they "lazy" too? Because about half of the recipients of food stamps are children. And a little over 1 out of every 5 recipients is disabled. Tell me...who among those groups that I just mentioned do you consider "lazy?" Over three quarters of all households that are SNAP recipients are either employed (the working poor that Carrie mentioned) or receive social security or SSI income, and less than 18% receive no income at all. One other thing that you and your conservative friends might find surprising...from the standpoint of race, whites make up the largest group of recipients...by over 10%. You can learn a lot when your research comes from pretty neutral sources...like the US census, rather than Fox News. Cutting $40 billion from the budget is the virtual equivalent of throwing chaise lounges off the Titanic to keep it from sinking. We could cut $ 400 billion from the Pentagon's budget and STILL spend more money on defense than ANY other country in the world. Excellent points by Dandelion...it doesn't make sense to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

The Dems "not voting" at all on H.R. 3102 were: Polis, Rush, Engel, McCarthy (NY), & Danny Davis. I don't know why they didn't vote or whether they were absent...but this was a crucial vote that was extremely close.

Carrie, I want to address my comments to you. You are a smart woman. Not too long ago a woman stepped forward and admitted that she had four "obama cell phones" funded by the taxpayers. Obama has been throwing out food stamps to people who don't qualify for food stamps....funded by the taxpayers. People are receiving food stamps who make too much money to get them. Another bad move on Obama's fault. It's always political with Obama. It's always for the liberal votes and it always impacts the taxpayers.

Always keep in the front of your mind that the taxpayers fund every single year over $60 million in fraud and abuse. With Obama in the White House, the new numbers could reach $80 billion a year in fraud and abuse. Obama keeps showing us that he doesn't have a clue what it is he is suppose to be doing for the American people. He should've thought about JOBS first and his legacy healthcare bill second. Didn't happen that way.

Bottom line...people don't want food stamps. They want to work 40 hours a week, receive medical care benefits from their employers and other perks. Americans want to work. Obama killed the jobs in our country. He blames George Bush and the republicans....five years later.....when he, in fact, killed the jobs by raising taxes on our small businesses and large corporations and then slammed the healthcare penalty tax on them. Then he cut our medicare benefits to fund Obamacare....targeting the baby boomers, the elderly who paid into medicare for decades.

The republicans, today, voted to defund Obamacare because it is a certified job killer. The Senate could take a stand and vote the same way. We don't know yet. Obama, in any case, will veto it. Meanwhile, it was reported today that the Obamacare software is not working and is a mess. What's new? Everything Obama touches falls apart IMO. The Cleveland Clinic, Obama's earlier poster clinic for his legacy healthcare bill laid over hundreds of people in preparation for the costs of Obamacare in its current form.

Fox News, by the way, reports the news. It can be verified. You aren't reading the truth because of the biased left wing outlets who cannot bring themselves to report on daily Obama failures. Liberals enjoy slamming Fox News but know this.....it has maintained the highest viewer rating of all cable news outlets for years!

I agree with Dandelion's spending cuts. The republicans are on board with spending cuts as there is plenty of waste in the Pentagon and their administrative people aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer but they have job security.....imagine that so they don't have to be smart or have a strong work ethic. They just need to show up. So, I'm on board with spending cuts to trim programs that aren't working and firing the "dead wood" employees who aren't worth their paychecks. Presidential appointee offices should be cut. The Pentagon has three and four well staffed offices doing the same thing but they are on different sides of the political aisle. Why do we tolerate this?

I believe we should be strengthening our military at all costs. We live in a dangerous world today.

Just my thoughts, and, Carrie, no anger directed at you. I simply wanted to have a conversation with someone with proven intelligence out here on the public forum.

These are my personal opinions posted the same as all of you have posted yours. Notice I will not personally attack you because I'm an adult and I understand we will disagree and accept that.

Diane, Obama does not give out Food Stamps. Individual state agencies administer the Federal SNAP program. IF there is fraud it is because the regulations are not being followed. It has been shown that there is very little fraud in the SNAP program because of the stringent rules of income and expense documentation required for approval. I have worked as an eligibility interviewer for Food Stamps and Medicaid. If an EI made a mistake in qualifying an applicant we were written up and was put in our permanent employee file. All of our cases were reviewed by our supervisor. I made one mistake and it occurred the first week after my training, ~ which by the way was an intense one month course that was the equivalent of college credit course. It was a pass/fail course. Anyone who did not pass did not have a job with the state.

Many people who do not understand the system seem to think that fraud is rampant and many get a free ride. That is not the case. Most stories people hear about food stamp abuse ~ are just that stories ~ with no factual basis.

Carrie B. (306)

Diane,

1. First of all, the story has NOTHING to do with Obamacare. However, since it was brought up...

a. The Cleveland Clinic has ADDED over 3,000 jobs since the passage of Obamacare;

b. The money cut from Medicare to help pay for Obamacare WAS NOT in benefit cuts...it was from savings in payments to hospitals and insurance companies that all involved looked at as waste, including some Republicans whom she idolizes;

c. In fact, those who receive Medicare benefits have received additional benefits because of Obamacare, including helping to close the donuthole on prescription drugs and the eliminations of copays for wellness visits to primary care doctors.

2. The SNAP program actually ADDS money to the economy, as measured by the CBO (as does the Affordable Care Act, for that matter, in the form of reducing the deficit). Every dollar spent on SNAP adds MORE than a dollar to the economy. If these same frugal, deficit-hawk Republicans that she mentions, who voted to defund Obamacare because it was such a job killer, really cared about the economy, they would not have voted to cut the SNAP program that has been proven to add MORE money to the economy than it costs.

3. The Pentagon's budget in 2012 was $ 682 billion. By contrast, China, the 2nd biggest military spender, spent about $ 249 billion. (Diane, it wouldn't be because your husband has a job related to Defense contracting that you don't want the Pentagon's budget cut, would it?)

4. Nobody's, and I repeat, NOBODY'S, taxes went up before 2013. And at the beginning of this year, the only tax that was restored was social security withholding went up 2% to 6.2%, what it had been before President Obama had decreased it a couple of years ago. Moreover, there have been NO penalties for not carrying insurance on employees to small businesses or to anyone else as of yet. In fact, over 98% of people's taxes went down since President Obama became President. Moreover, beginning the year ending 2013, the top two brackets are going up to what they were in the Clinton days. The historical evidence points to the fact that as marginal brackets are raised, there is no harm done to the economy.

5. The leap from $ 60 million (which is correct...about $ 57.7 million was discovered) in fraud for fiscal year ending in 2012 to $ 80 BILLION this year comes from where?

6. Fox News most certainly DOES NOT ALWAYS report the news...only what they feel is news that they feed to their flock of right wing followers and believers of anything anti Obama.

Numbers come from the US Census, the US Budget/CBO, and the IRS. What's the basis for your statements?

Like you, I believe we should strengthen our military as well. However, we have very different ideas about how to do that. Some of the ways to do that, in my opinion, are: spend less money on no-bid contracts that are part of the Good Old Boys' Network; stop infusing money into causes that we have little chance of effecting positive outcomes on (like the civil war in Syria); relinquish the cowboy, go-it-alone mentality that permeates the Pentagon culture and ask for help from our friends (and accept no for an answer sometimes); and mostly, help our troops get the help and support they need...both while they are in service, and when they leave. We have a Veteran's affairs service that is falling apart and not providing even what can be rated as mediocre service to those who need it most...our disabled servicemen and servicewomen.

In Illinois (as far as I know, this is State implemented, with Federal dollars - Obama has nothing to do with it) you have to fill out PAGES of paperwork, show proof of income, report ANY change in income, ALL people in a household (even if they DON'T qualify for food stamps), etc., etc. It's NOT simple, it's NOT easy, it's NOT Fair, but it's better than in the 1970's, when ONLY people with children qualified. There were teens back then that were homeless, or nearly so, and usually had to be arrested for shoplifting to get a decent meal & a "safe" bed. This is stupid. In a country as rich in resources as America there should be NO Homeless or Hungry!

They report half truths, exaggerations and hype. I stand with Thomas - we could cut a LOT of money from defense, take care of our people, create some jobs, have a booming economy and the only ones who would hurt would be Halliburton and it's ilk.
