Reporters from Reader's Digest, the US consumer magazine, dropped wallets at various locations - from parks to shopping centres - in major cities around the globe, to see whether those residents that recovered them would attempt to contact the owner.

Isn't it surprising to see how dishonest people in Zurich are?!

I noticed Canada was not on the test list. I would have been curious to know how a city like Toronto, ON or Vancouver, BC rated.
Thanks Carrie :")

And Prague is third? Well, having personal and good experience of Prague, I wouldn't say so. But a research is always a research...

Interesting, however just an experiment. Note the homeless man who discovered a back pack and it was returned to the Chinese traveler, and this was in the US. There are a lot of decent people around the world. Too bad there has to be scum bags that pick pocket vacationers!
Thanks Carrie.

I was surprised about Zurich, too. I believe Switzerland is relatively wealthy. Many of the lowest ranking cities are suffering from EU austerity measures, so I can understand why people would be more likely to keep the wallets, but not in a wealthy country like Switzerland. Maybe all those bank accounts have corrupted them there! LOL!

Zurich doesn't surprise me BECAUSE it is wealthy. Generally speaking poor people are more empathetic and more honest than the rich. Come on, people, wake up and smell the coffee, the big banks and corporations are not stealing from you because they are poor!

Interesting facts. Too bad people just can't be kind and return wallets. Not so much the money, but when you'd have to get a new Driver's licences, credit cards, etc it can be a major pain in the ass! Thanks Carrie

It all depends on the person who found the wallet I guess.

Thanks for this post.

When I find a wallet in the street I put it on the fence; if it is still there when I return I take it to the police station. I used to ring up the number inside; wait for a reply; say no I wouldn't take it to the person; wait at home on several occasions when s/he did not come as arranged.

All such finds have been acknowledged as claimed.
