The 1955 play, written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee, depicts the trial of John Scopes, who was convicted of violating a Tennessee law against teaching Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in a public school.

Sad this lack of acceptance of the arts and freedom of speech with a classic play--actions akin to the burning and banning of books.

Very disappointing, not just the closing of this production, which is a well written play but this new reluctance to accept reality. It happened, it was a real court case. What's next, close Shakespeare? I'm sure he offends some as well.

Truly sad.

Noted. Not shocked, but greatly disappointed. I guess the "up" side may be that since it's banned, more curious kids will look into it and spread the word.

Once again, religious insanity rears its ugly head. Did they really promote their cause for protesting this play or just make themselves look silly?

I can't for the life of me understand the stupidity of creationists, evolution is fact not a theory! This has proven over and over again, it shouldn't be a subject to be argued at all! The worst place is the USA in this regard, I mean it's unthinkable how "modern" people and even those who are scientists can hold these outdated beliefs. A lot of sadness and emotional discord result from them.

Funny how these people are resembling those same groups they profess to hate....Islam, for example, which censors any and ALL expressions of freedom! Why is it ok when Christians do it?

Dumb move on their part. Obviously they've never seen the play. Cates is found guilty, Brady dies a hero's death in the middle of an anti-Darwin rant, and even Drummond applauds Brady for sticking to his creationist beliefs. Since current creationists can't see beyond their own narrow noses, they would certainly view the play as a big win for their side--if they weren't so afraid to see it.
