How American music legends made millions off the work of a Zulu tribesman who died a pauper.

Wow - Solomon Linda was a genius. I love When the lion sleeps tonight and Wimboweh!! It is so sad to think he died a pauper , when millions were made from his music.

Thank You for this very interesting article Carrie. - learned something new today about the history of some music I have always loved.

Thank you for this great article.
I heard about this years ago. It's never had a lot of press.

The movie "Lion King" made a lot of money. The song "The lion sleeps tonight" was a big part in that success. The kids just loved it.
This is really something.

Fascinating read - this has been one of my all-time favorite songs and I never knew the background. It's sad, but may end up a happy story for Linda's descendents. I really hope so. The Entertainment industry was notorious for screwing people out of royalties, copyrights, even credit for songs and movies back then...can't say it still isn't done today. It's sad that Solomon Linda couldn't see what his Zulu song became over the decades...Thank you for finding this article. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

In the days before copyright, it was a blood fest.

I loved the song "The lion sleeps tonight" Too bad that Solomon Linda couldn't see what his Zulu song became.
