Gridlock Destroyed Rome. Is America Next?

As Caesar told Rome's Senate, "Certainly there was greater merit and wisdom in those who raised so mighty an empire from humble means, than in us, who can scarcely preserve what they so honorably acquired."

I do worry about the future of this country - so I am getting active in sending letters, signing petitions, joining activist groups, raising hell, and making contingency plans just in case the doo-doo hits the fan. It's only a matter of time before the barbarians are at the gates - and the barbarians are not necessarily al Qaeda/Taliban bugnuts. A lot of potential "barbarians" are in our borders right now.

Republicans, and Tea Partiers specifically, may s imagine themselves as revolutionary Americans and even republican Romans by churning out pamphlets under names like “Publius,” “Brutus,” and “Cato”, and they may be using the same tactics as these Romans which amount to prohibiting the government to function at all, but this is where the analogy ends. Americas Republicans are driven by one thing only and that is the inability to accept that an African-American Democrat (albeit conservative) has become President of this nation, twice. They're unable to accept the will of the majority and are willing to push democracy aside to try and turn things their way.

And another analogy doesn't ring true either: no matter how much the Right cries that the barbarian hordes are at the gates, people are slowly realizing that they barbarians are not a foreign force trying to get in, but a foe which has already been amongst them for a couple of decades.

We can't even recognize a nazi coup! HTH can we keep our democracy as we helplessly watch it dissolve?

Thanks Carrie for the link. The article by Mr. Goodman is a great read. Now if we can just get the obstructionist GOP to read the article!! Read and noted.

Thank you Carrie for this great read. There are certainly some similarities. One thing I learned in Junior High School - many years ago- that stuck with me, was how destructive Monopolies could become. Way back in years a fellow owned service stations in the US and had become very wealthy. The government stepped in and made him franchise them, and I think he sold some, as he actually could set the price of gas.I just can't remember the name of the company, but I'm sure if anyone read this they would know.

Funny that he should write this at just this moment, I have been thinking the very same thing of late; that we may just be right where the Romans were, thinking that we are in charge, but not noticing the rats gnawing away at through the bottom of the ship of state...from within.
I believe, as Lona does, that much of the present turmoil is about that African-American having beat them TWICE, but also, has to do with the conservatives' long term agenda to do away with any remnant of the New Deal. And the Kochsuckers are responsible for funding much of the recent "putsch" in that direction. Excuse me Mr Hitler, if I got the spelling wrong on that.

Fascinating and it reminds me that the "other" definition of ALEC is American Labor Equals Chattel

So now others are finally seeing what I have seen for over 20 years. We are the New Rome, and because we ignore history, we are doomed to repeat it.

The Barbarians are not at the gates, they have been among us from within from the beginning.

A country cannot be conquered from without until it has corrupted itself from within.....and we are way past that point. I hope against hope that I am wrong and we can, as a people, stop this downward spiral into oblivion. I hope it is not too late.
