Ukraine sent an elite national guard unit to its southern port of Odessa, desperate to halt a spread of the fighting between government troops and a pro-Russia militia in the east that killed combatants on both sides Monday.

i have been praying for peace for the Ukraine, I too am afraid that this civil unrest will last a long time. I wish that the Pro-Russians, would just go the Russia and leave the rest of the Ukraine in peace, except they were pretty smart taking over Odessa, so close to the Black Sea, and so many well educated people.This trouble came so fast after the Sochi Olympics, it makes me wonder. I was not in favor of Canada sending planes to Poland just in case, it made sense to put sanctions. Noted with thanks Carrie.

I don't see things improving for the better any time soon as long as Russia keeps stoking the fires. I'm sympathetic to Russia to a point in them not wanting another NATO member on their border, but I don't think Russian citizens of Ukraine are in any particular danger as long as they remain law-abiding. Nor do I think they have been persecuted or discriminated against. That propaganda is nothing more than a strategic and political move by Putin. People are dying to make Putin more popular and further solidify his hold on power. I regard the Russian annexation of Crimea as illegal and naked aggression. It seems to me that the majority of Ukrainians want closer ties to the West, but Russian loyalists who can't have their way, emboldened by Russia's support, are thumbing their noses at democracy.

Ukraine elite forces are thugs from the Pravy Sektor and Svoboda, Nazi groups that hyjacked the Maidan protest and forced themselves into the new Ukraine government, in clear violation of Ukraine Constitution. This new government has foolishly dismembered and humiliated elite riot police, Ukraine Army is not willing to shoot on their own people, so they are left without any serious forces to control the country. But, hey, Nazis (now renamed National Guard) are more than eager to kill Russians, Jews, Roma... and how ardent they are was demonstrated in Odessa Union Building and described here:

Washington, Ukrainian puppet regime prepare new fascist slaughter in Odessa; By Alex Lantier

"...The Kiev regime’s attempts to explain the fascists’ torching of Odessa’s Trade Union House — claiming that they were provoked by pro-Russian protesters, who shot at pro-Kiev Right Sector protesters before the latter attacked and burned the Trade Union House — also have come under scrutiny.

Videos posted online by the pro-Kiev protesters showed gunmen wearing red armbands shooting at the pro-Kiev protesters from positions controlled by Ukrainian riot police. This strongly suggests that the shooting on the pro-Kiev forces was a provocation organized by the Kiev regime, not by the pro-Russian protesters.

The riot police did not side with the pro-Russian protesters in Odessa, but with Kiev. They arrested none of the pro-Kiev thugs for assaulting the Trade Union House, and arrested many pro-Russian demonstrators instead. No local police were arrested for aiding the pro-Russian forces, however.

The forces that shot at the pro-Kiev demonstration appear to have been working with police as allies of Kiev, seeking to provoke a bloody confrontation. There are also charges that many of the dead in the Trade Union House were not killed by a rampaging fire unleashed by the fascists’ throwing of Molotov cocktails, as initially claimed, but were murdered by Right Sector fighters and hooligans who broke into the building and carried out a massacre.

Graphic and disturbing photos taken inside the Trade Union Hall after the massacre and published in Russian media appear to show that, while some of the victims burned to death, others did not. One pregnant woman was found dead, apparently strangled, with her clothes intact in a room showing no fire or smoke damage. Another man appears to have been shot several times in the head. Several victims have gruesome burns but, grotesquely, only to their head and upper body — as if they were first killed and then parts of their bodies doused with gasoline and set alight. One woman appears to have been raped and then her upper body set on fire.

The horrific violence of the Kiev regime’s fascist supporters is an indictment of the installation by the NATO powers of an unelected and unpopular regime in Kiev through a fascist putsch. As the Kiev regime continues its military operations to crush armed pro-Russian protesters in the Donetsk region of southeast Ukraine, it is preparing renewed bloodshed in Odessa, plunging Ukraine ever deeper into civil war and threatening a Russian military intervention against pro-Kiev forces. It has set the world on the edge of a global war.
..."

On Friday, activists set tents in front of the Trade Union Building in Odessa to collect signatures for a referendum on local autonomy. Some 1.500 National Guard forces came, attacked activists with clubs, burned tents and UNARMED activists took hide in the Union Building where they were trapped, killed and set on fire as described here: How the thugs killed Odessa inhabitants in the Trade Unions House – the details of bloody scenario

According to the latest info, more than 300 people have died — on the site or from the wounds and burns they got on friday at the Union Building massacre. This is not a way to treat people in democracy.

This whole affair smells so badly of the former Soviet way of doing things and Putin is a risk taking megalomaniac. the people of Ukraine, regardless of their ethnicity (after all they are all Ukrainians) deserve so much better after living under the Soviet boot for so many decades.

@Jelica R.--
What, no mention of atrocities that have been committed by pro-Russian Ukrainians against other Ukrainians? No mention of the fact that Ukraine is a sovereign state and Russia has no business sending troops there, that they are in violation of their own treaty and International Law? No mention of the anti-Semitic and racist acts by pro-Russian Ukrainians? No mention of the fact that the large number of former Russians in the Ukraine came at the expense of the indigenous peoples living there? No mention of the fact that it has been Russia amassing military near the Ukrainian border and sending in thinly disguised Russian forces? The U.S. and it's European allies didn't do that--that was all Russia.

It is just wrong to demand Russian troops to occupy any part of the Ukraine, considering they are hardly an impartial party and are involved in the unrest. And it is simply delusional if you think the U.N. would ever allow such a thing. BTW, just what the heck is up with your blind support for the authoritarian, repressive regime in Russia?

I'm in favor of all sides backing off and letting Ukrainians decide things democratically for themselves. Where is your petition for that? Don't you believe in democracy, that the people of a country should decide their own fate, not to be influenced by outside parties, including both Russia and the U.S.?

@Lady Flo--
You're not making any sense. Who said anything about wanting war? Who said anything about wanting to be the world's police? Who said anything about wanting the FBI or CIA involved? Besides, what would the FBI be doing in Ukraine? Obviously, you're very confused.

Let me make this perfectly clear, if it wasn't already: I support Ukrainians democratically deciding their fate for themselves without any outside interference of any kind. No CIA, no Russian special forces, nobody else.

@Bruce

"What, no mention of atrocities that have been committed by pro-Russian Ukrainians against other Ukrainians?..."
If you have links, please post them. I'd like to know about all aspects of a situation.

"No mention of the fact that Ukraine is a sovereign state ..."
Gee, should I always state the obvious?

"...and Russia has no business sending troops there, that they are in violation of their own treaty and International Law? ..."
If there were any Russian troops in Ukraine, that would be all over the CNN, NYT, WP, BBC... I haven't seen any of this, except that one NYT front page, which they dropped after 2 days with small statement on the 38th page. You might have missed this.

"... No mention of the anti-Semitic and racist acts by pro-Russian Ukrainians? ..."
Haven't heard. Please, post a link?

"...No mention of the fact that the large number of former Russians in the Ukraine came at the expense of the indigenous peoples living there? ..."
Those former Russsians came to Ukraine together with the land they were living on, when their Regions were added to Ukraine to complement the prevalently agrarian society with some industry.

"... No mention of the fact that it has been Russia amassing military near the Ukrainian border ..."
Where should they amass their troops? In Ukraine? As long as Russian troops are on Russian territory, it's nobody else's business.

"... and sending in thinly disguised Russian forces? ..."
I repeat: If there were any Russian troops in Ukraine, that would be all over the CNN, NYT, WP, BBC...

"... The U.S. and it's European allies didn't do that--that was all Russia. ..."
Russia toppled Ukrainian legitimate, albeit corrupted, government? I believe it were US and EU. Never heard of Nuland: "Yats is the man." or "We spent $5 billion to give Ukraine democracy". Well, this is how delivered democracy looks like.

"... It is just wrong to demand Russian troops to occupy any part of the Ukraine, considering they are hardly an impartial party ...?
They were one country until 1990 and still have strong family and commercial ties. How can they be "impartial" is beyond me.

"... and are involved in the unrest. ..."
Prove it, or shut up! Even the highly intrusive US surveillance net was never able to prove any Russian undercover actions or presence of military forces in Ukraine. This, by itself, bears some weight

"... And it is simply delusional if you think the U.N. would ever allow such a thing. ..."
I don't think that culprits from the UN Security Council which toppled the Ukraine government will ever allow Russia to settle things. Back in Nov 2013, Russia offered that both EU and Russia help Ukraine, and EU rejected this to keep Ukraine out of Russian influence.

"...BTW, just what the heck is up with your blind support for the authoritarian, repressive regime in Russia? ..."
Huh, where did you get this?

"... I'm in favor of all sides backing off and letting Ukrainians decide things democratically for themselves. ..."
I agree.

"... Where is your petition for that? ..."
If I have one, I would be pleased to post link wherever I can.

"... Don't you believe in democracy, that the people of a country should decide their own fate, not to be influenced by outside parties, including both Russia and the U.S.?"
Amen!

Lady Flo: "FBI and CIA behind". There are rumours of CIA and FBI holding a whole flat in Police building in Kiev. Oddly, none of Ukraine officials have clearance to enter there. US government had confirmed that some 25 CIA and FBI officials are in Ukraine, to help Ukraine fight "terrorism", of course. Also, it was confirmed that Brenner of CIA was secretly in Kiev on Apr 15, after this piece if info was all over the Internet.
