Da Vinci is disappearing. This once-vibrant red chalk drawing by the master - widely believed to be a self-portrait - has faded into a dull watermark blotted by dark marks.

OK, Daryl, with all due respect, you didn't read the article.

No, he didn't decide to have his work self-destruct.

Imagine, looking in a mirror, and drawing THAT INSIGHTFUL a portrait of YOURSELF!
Leonardo da Vinci was said to have been beautiful as a young man.
He also, as a young man, was brought up before the Inquisition {!} on charges of being Gay. But, fortunately for the world, he got released - maybe because he had influential friends.
Freud did a study on Leonardo's homosexuality - but, in the 19th and early 20th century, people didn't want to believe it! He never got married, tho... But he did have "friends" he was close to...

I do hope they know what to do now in order to preserve it for the centuries to come. It would be such a loss when this portrait disappears altogether.

Sad. Could it be restored? Is there a miracle of modern Chemistry waiting in the wings?
