Not all of the marine creatures that fishermen trap in their nets end up on your plate. American fisheries discard about 20 billion pounds of the fish they catch every year.

It's easier to scoop everything up than to fish with methods specifically designed to catch a certain variety. It's more cost effective to throw all the side catch overboard than to process it. And than we wonder why the fish in the oceans become depleted and why the existence of animals that feed on them is endangered.
Actually I don't really give a toss how much money the US (and other countries as well) throw overboard, I care about the life that is destroyed as a result.

Disgisting. No wonder our ocean ecosystems are dead or dying.

This is very sad. All the people that go hungry and "they" are just throwing away edible food. SMH

Noted and it's sad,but not sure if there is a solution for this. Even if we only fished with a rod & reel, it's still possible to catch the "wrong" species. To suggest "just stop eating seafood" is not only illogical and unreasonable, but not condusive to being healthy.
