'Only Stones Remain': Gaza Lies in Ruins

Driving the length of this tiny stretch of land -- 1.8 million Palestinians live on Gaza's 223 square mile -- scenes of devastation are everywhere. The trip from the north to the south of Gaza was only possible during a 12-hour humanitarian cease-fire.

I saw this on Al Jazeera English. I understand the need to defend themselves against Hamas soldiers, but it appears they're targeting apartment blocks where families live. I didn't see anyone with weapons, etc fleeing only families with children who are cuaghtin the crossfire.

And really bombing hospitals? How's that going to help defend Israel?

They asked for it !!! Palestinians freely elected HAMAS a terrorist group whose Charter is to destroy Israel. Just YESTERDAY for 4 hours the jews stopping firing hoping for peace talks but the rockets kept coming into Israel.
Israel has anti-missile capabilities which saves somewhat and they keep the children in bomb shelters.
But Hamas doesn't care they use the children and civilians as shields when their injuries and deaths get the sympathy from Americans like you-all.
EVEN if you hate the jews. why in the world would you-all stick up for a culture that says OBLadin was a HOLY WARRIOR....and a culture that supplies suicide bombers, terrorist that take down planes and bomb subways, and abuse women. Doesn't make sense to me. I hope they BOMB out GAZA and Hamas because they are assisted by Syria and Iran our arch enemies.

I watched a film clip on the news last night that showed HAMAS firing from the windows of a hospital.
Small arms fire, and some RPG rounds. The people had been told to evacuate the hospital by the Israeli military, then they blew the building up, killing those HAMAS scum who were still inside , firing at the Israeli soldiers,
Side with who you want and if you let Hamas win.....They along with Helzbolah will be trying to knock on our doors. The jews don't have suicide bombers, terrorists that take down planes and attacked us on 911. We are lucky to have them as allies fighting our fight for us.

Israel should be ashamed of what they are doing. They should remember what suffering means, and what they personally went through during WW II.
Where is compassion?

Dimitris Dallis (7)
Monday July 28, 2014, 1:14 pm
I agree with Birgit... And if they continue like this, soon there will be only dust...desert...
I also wonder: with all this technology, how is it possible not to find where those "bad" rockets come from? I mean the Israelis... They have the technology right?
And no matter what the Palestinians vote, this is not an answer to Hamas fanatics. Neither are gonna solve their "problem"...

Israel has proclaimed themselves the rulers of the world. They are right no one can say boo to them. They hold the whole world in their hands as they are the rulers of all that matters. The financial money markets! I salute you brave Palestinians,Heroes of Freedom and rights. How heavy you are paying and because the financial markets are run by the Jews no one comes to your aid .Shame on this world for being ruled by the root of all evil.

Noted. It is difficult for me to understand anyone defending Israel regarding this. They continued to build their settlements, and the Palestinians voicing their objections fell on deaf ears. So, the fighting escalated. But, one side has U.S. weapons and money, and the other is pretty much "dirt poor." Even Israeli reservists are refusing to fight in this one. Jewish Voice for Peace and other organizations are also chastising Israel. Former Israel supporters are staying silent or speaking out against Israel.....as it loses its P.R. war.

I would be hurt at the accusations and intimations I see being hurled at Israel except I know the comments are wrong, they're parroting Arab terrorist bullsh*t that a diehard bigot is providing, and each comment gets louder and bigger ~ it's like a big p*ssing contest ~ I'm a better bigot than you are! No, I am! I assume because amongst the collective lot of them they couldn't find two correct facts about Israel, they make stuff up that's so absurd you could die laughing, well it would be except they actually believe it. I used to be inclined to feel bad that they're so narrow-minded and closed-minded to questioning and searching and absorbing new information. I don't feel sorry anymore!! Their choice, angry, belligerant...and getting more and more tedious every day ~ they get new material posted every day.

\\israel has proclaimed themselves rulers of the world. I must have missed that broadcast, but honestly, since the world steadfastly refuses to let Israel have her ancestral homeland, her legal homeland by buying the land back from absentee landlords, again her legal homeland by occupancy and developement ~the justice sure would be poetic.
Bibi didn't nearly fatally wound John Paul II in an assasination attempt. Or attack a school in Riussia and massacre 330 little kids. Blow up a French UTA passengerjet in mid-air killing 171. Blow up embassies in Kenya and Tanzania 302 dead/over 5000 injured, blow up a commuter train in Madrid 202 dead/1400 injured.
And Bibi's Boys didn't pilot two jets into the twin towers.
Just a couple samples, the list is pages and pages long.
Molly, if you're that knickered about this medication-responsive delusion of King Bibi, well do what you have to do. Personally, I think we have a much more extensive and dangerous problem to worry about. Remember, get rid of Israel and you get rid of the only barrier to terrorism in the Middle East.

Lois, there is a HUGE and fatal error in your reasoning Hamas and the Palestinian people are two seperate and totally different entities. You are so absolutely correct, but you've made an incorrect assumption as to whose ears.
Lois, Hamas has been being financed and supplied by Iran to the tune of billions and billions of dollars. But again, you're correct in that none of that money filtered down to the people.
Because, and perhaps some day you folks will finally figure this out, this conflict has nothing whatsoever to do with the Palestinian people.
Lois, have you ever heard of the term conscientious objector? They oppose war by defintion and will not bear arms, but theywill serve in ancillary positions .It's not some noteworthy indication of revolt and unrest in Israel: every country that's ever gone to war has had it's CO's.
Yeah, the Sunday Jews that have spent their entire lives in the suburbs, or elite universities, making their token yearly appearance at temple on the High Holy days, that think Hanukkah is about getting obscenely expensive gifts. I can see where they'd have reservations, but then again what do they know about Israel? I guarantee you they've never been there.
Speaking of losing face, I doubt the Palestinian Authority is real thrilled about Hamas spitting their faces, and after Ben Gurion Sisi telling Hamas that that if one hair on an Egyptian head was harmed there would be no more Hamas, and the Arab League censure, and then Iran pulling out on them because Hamas spit in theirfaces. Iran went ballistic and cursed them..let's just say it was colorful.

Keep deluding yourself and playing the Israeli Jewish pity card Barbara ~ "Arab terrorist bullsh*t" coming from every corner of the globe? I think not. Finally after all these years and all the atrocities Israel is being seen for what they are ~ Zionist terrorists. They are not true believer and followers of Judaism and the Torah anymore than the right wing nut jobs in this country are True believers and followers of Christianity. Hypocrites and self serving opportunists all.

Killing kids, the oldies and those defenseless is a brave act of self defense? The world and super power are in silent? where is the US, EU and the rest who usually cry for the world PEACE? As Jesus and Buddha said the world is consisted of bad people and evils MOST! I think they mean of those who can't distinguish good from bad. 'Compassion' may be too hard to understand.

NO MORE WAR!!!

My heart goes to all affected by the evil act. Thank you very much Carrie for the post here during this hard time.

You cannot 'educate' people, who are willfully blind, people, like yourself.

I realized, some time ago, that it is not so much about being 'blind' as it is about selfishness and arrogance. People with narcissistic and selfish tendencies, tend to feel less empathy than average people.
Some have little regard for others, even less for those that serve them or their interests.

What is lacking is fundamental respect ..

Interesting how a lot of commentators assume Iím is pro-jew/anti-islam or pro-islam/anti-jew. Let me clear this up for anyone who thinks Iím taking a stand with one or the other religion; IíM NOT.

My religion is hated by both and they both basically call us heathens and demons. I am not an American, nor am I from the Middle East. So I think Iím pretty objective here. Neither side are innocent little kittens nor am I drumming support for either side.

Iím telling you what I saw on the news, reporters in bulletproof vests and apartment blocks being blown up in the background.

Iím calling bullshit when you bomb hospitals (targeting operating theatres) and apartment blocks filled with families celebrating Eid/Ramadaan. Thatís called soft targets. There were cameras in the hospitals and in the debris of the apartment blocks, not a gunman or weapon in sight.

This isnít an attack of those idiots crawling through tunnels to Israel. This is children, families like yours or mine. Iím sorry, killing children is never right in my humble opinion.

Itís absolutely overwhelming the lack of compassion by either side and by the people who pick sides. Itís disgusting how neither side want to work for a peaceful solution.

Before you spout any hatred at either side, try and remember who put the gun in Osamaís hand and taught him to fire it, who assisted Israel since the British left the area in the 1930ís (try checking out Nakba: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakba_Day ) and who destabilised the WHOLE region by invading Iraq to look for those pesky weapons of mass destruction which havenít surfaced to date?

For every finger you point, 3 point right back at you. Fostering hatred is what got us into this mess. Overcoming hatred for the ďother sideĒ, swallowing your arrogance and finding mental fortitude to recognise whatís right and wrong without a religious handbook written by some men in the caveman era is whatís going to get us out.

Iíve not reported any of the comments because despite the bigotry and hatred on both sides. Iíve left them there so both sides can feel ashamed at what has been written. We should be pulling together people, hand in hand, saying: NO MORE WAR!

This isnít cave man times with knuckles dragging on the floor. Itís 2014, 2014! Instead of revving our planet for the next technological jump (hopefully space age), weíre so dumb, we canít even keep peace. When will people learn that the globe is interconnected and when one of us suffers, all of us suffer?

We should force both groups into a room and make them make peace. And yes, I think the UN is an even bigger disappointment since the League of Nations and is as much to blame as anyone else in this mess.

oh, please Jan B.
I saw a video where Netanyahu confessed what enormous war criminal he is and, for a while it would have appeared he has a human heart...

Can you please provide a source, link, something so that everyone can see what you mean when you said:

'I watched a film clip on the news last night that showed HAMAS firing from the windows of a hospital.
Small arms fire, and some RPG rounds.'

And please tell me since when is a film clip evidence for anything ?

Reminds me to Washington when they refer to a you tube video which is evidence enough to blame Russia for the crashed MH17 - but is a fake.

Certain people here seem to be forgetting that Israeli voices (and holocaust survivor voices) are being raised against the extreme force being used.
A few days ago, jan b was referring to rockets being fired from hospitals - and was corrected: the reporter in questions said "near a hospital".
jan b. - this famous film you describe - was the firing AFTER the hospital had been shelled beyond use as a hospital? That would also place the timing to after the ground invasion .... Do you SERIOUSLY expect everyone in Gaza to lie back and let the IDF march over them, destroy their homes, kill their people ... and NOBODY try to fight back? I'd like to see a link to this news clip ...

Barbara, and Pisces Rising ... when most people commenting here talk of "Israel", they are referring to the current leadership and the military - not to each and every Israeli. So DO stop trying to make out that anyone who dares criticise Israeli policies & strategies concerning the Palestinians as "Israel haters", "Jew haters". You might think this makes you look better, more saintly & being martyred, but you're not very convincing.

Throwing around insults is sign of a weak position.

Parsifal - I assume you are referring to the fact that the Arabs are also Semites? Although certain people try to claim sole rights to being "Semitic", just as they seem to claim sole rights to the land between the Med & the Jordan River.

The article conveys the tragedies being experienced by these poor people - so terrible for these ordinary people.

Already, life was hell - now, the seige will prevent rebuilding, replacing what one has lost ... how can people NOT be sensitive to the suffering? (See Closed Zone to get some feel for life BEFORE things got worse ... a film by Gisha, and Israelu human rights group)

Thanks for posting, Carrie.

Noted Extremely sad so many deaths of these people 1,036 and 6,000 others injured this is genocide at it's worst. They have nothing left to go back to all of their homes and belongings are gone. They lived through hell all of these years, this is so appalling. Now who is next on Israel's list of destruction. Disgraceful

"Imagine there's no religion....." So much evil has been done in the name of religion - and it is sad because we are all human beings who all want pretty much the same things.... a home, family, work, love, security.... we should be better because of our differences, not killing each other because of them.
