Israel is the most militarized society on earth, with soldiers and military installations honeycombed throughout its civil society. Within one of Tel Aviv's most densely populated neighborhoods sits Ha'Kirya, the army's headquarters, a gigantic complex.

So, we've established that an office building and a rocket launcher are indistinguishable and it's naughty to carry a gun in a country where suicide bombers, gun and knife-wielding fanatics, and loonies attack passenger buses with construction equipment are running amuck?
And the IDF is using human shields because they're in Israel? Meh!!
Really, really scraping the bottle of the gunk barrel.

More than 1.5 million people are crammed in the 158 km² that Israel has not attacked. Density, which nears 10.000 people per km², is the highest in the world.

First of all the reason why they have so many of their people in the military is because they have had to defend themselves since the country of Israel was put together in the 20th Century. Israel has been attacked from the start and if they did not have the military they have they would have been wiped out completely. In addition they have to have their military in areas in which there are civilians not because they are using them as shields but because the terrorists have been aiming their attacks against civilians in Israel for decades and so they have to do whatever they can do to protect them.

Esther, perhaps you should check your history. Israel has always been the aggressor in Palestine. They also have a history of lying to their own people to gain support. typical of all governments. The sooner you and others admit the fact that Israel is doing the same things it accuses of Hamas of doing, ~ and much more that is worse ~ the sooner Israel will be held accountable for it's genocide of the Palestinian people and Palestine will be allowed to be free.

Yes, many of us do have family and friends who live in the middle-east and some of us have family and friends who have had their homes destroyed and lives disrupted by Israeli bombs. Don't presume to know everything about everyone who comments here and don't presume to know how much the Israeli people are lied to by their government just like we all are lied to by our governments. The difference is some of us take a stand when our government does things we disagree with and know are morally wrong. Unfortunately, many Israelis are content to believe their governments lies and watch while genocide is committed in their names.

Why Do Palestinians In Gaza Support Hamas

Well stated, ty Carrie for the article.
Killing hundreds of innocents, including, children, the elderly, disabled, me, women and animals/pets, is A DIRECT STATEGY TO bomb/murder/mutilate into 'submission' and strike terror into civilians - thus, effectively, using them as 'human shields' - IDF drops bombs on hospitals, schools, municipal buidings, entire housing complexes, mosques, universities.. the entire infrastructure.. electric and water supplies are also bombed and destroyed, as well as refugee centers and, where people are forced to flee to, those that can make it.

The physical targeting and psychological warfare of civilians, in effect, ensures that IDF will be unopposed in these places as there are no combatants - only civilians.

The abysmal truth is, that Israel is deliberately decimating Gaza and massacring it's inhabitants, indiscriminately, using public facilities to do so and people's homes, to maximize damage (contrary to the lies made to cover this up), not "minimize" it, lie, and fabricate 'justifications' without providing any verifiable evidence, whatsoever - hence, using the civilian population as 'human shields', and calling these heinous murders, 'collateral damage', fully expecting the world to go along with this subterfuge and disgusting lies and actions, that are in violation of the Laws of War.
IDF does not have a reputation of 'high standards', quite the opposite.
Shills and apologists would, and do make excuses and 'justifications' for such insufferable arrogance.
Typically, Palestinian human rights violations by the state of Israel are compartmentalized and denied, outright, as expected.

Carrie B. you should check the history. I can recall when the current country of Israel was created in the 20th century. I remember that a lot of the land that they were given was desert land where people had traveled through but no one was able to live in before. Donations was given to Israel and Israel worked hard to change it and make it liveable the way it is today. I recall that the surrounding Muslim countries were so mad about any country in the Middle East not be run by Muslims and went to war with Israel for that reason. In addition they told all the "Palestinians" to leave that area and come into one of their countries because they were going to be very violent etc. in that area. However some years later when they saw that they could not win their war with Israel they changed their mind and insisted that those "Palestinians" go back to that area. That included the children who were born in their country. They would then use terrorism and also propaganda. They have constantly attacked Israel in all different ways. There was a time when they used women and children by putting bombs on them covered by clothing to go even on school buses to kill Israelis. They had no problem with the fact that their women and children would also die in those cases because they said that they would go to heaven for doing so. They also constantly sent rockets into Israel while surrounding themselves with women and children. Israel had to do all kinds of things to defend itself because all kinds of these things were done constantly.

Carrie, actually the Gazans no longer support Hamas.

The Hamas terrorists fire their rockets from the concentrated civilian areas. Hamas does not allow civilians to use their bomb shelters. Israel does not take their children to hang them off buildings that Israel has warned them that they will attack nor does Israel force their civilians to stand around a building or to sit on the roof. Israel does not force out the sick from hospitals to run their campaigns from.

In fact, the worst that this article is accusing some IDF troops of is using unused land on a kibbutz to train on and to sleep there, possibly some of their own people being part of the unit. NOWHERE IS THERE AN ACCUSATION THAT THE IDF IS USING THE KIBBUTZ BOMB SHELTERS DURING A ROCKET ATTACK FORCING THEIR OWN PEOPLE TO BE IN DANGER. This is in total contrast to Gaza.

What a pathetic piece of rubbish that Carrie is trying to use to demonise Israel with. I dispute her suggestion that she knows anyone in Israel, her attitude and behaviour clearly show that she doesn't.

Total nonsense - not one rocket was fired from the Ha'Kirya. Ha'Kirya was formerly a British Army base during the British Mandate period. As Tel Aviv grew, the civilian infrastructure was later built around the camp. It was never used for offensive purposes.

a question, one would not dare to ask ?

Why Aren't ISIS and Al-Qaeda Attacking Israel?

Alexa R. (330)
Saturday August 9, 2014, 12:36 pm
Why? This is what ISIS leader said:

The Islamic State, or ISIS, has responded to critics who have questioned why its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is not actively supporting Hamas in fighting Israel.

After capturing vast swathes of Iraq and Syria, ISIS declared the regions under its control as a "Caliphate", or Islamic state, and appointed Baghdadi as "leader of the Muslims". While many jihadists celebrated the announcement, others - including Al Qaeda, which ISIS broke off from last year - have criticized the move for a variety of reasons.

Since the recent escalation between Israel and Islamist terrorists in Gaza, some of those critics have questioned why a self-declared "Caliphate" is not rushing to the aid of Muslims in the Hamas-controlled territory.

In a statement a spokesperson for the group, Nidal Nuseiri reaffirmed that conquering "Bayt el-Maqdis" (Jerusalem) and destroying the State of Israel is central to the group's "jihad", or holy war.

However, he pointed out that ISIS has been taking a systematic approach in its campaign, and outlined six specific stages it said needed to be fulfilled before taking on Israel.

Some of those "stages" - building a firm base for an Islamic state in Iraq, and using it as a springboard to wage war in Syria and Lebanon - have already been achieved. But he said a number of other criteria still needed to be fulfilled before challenging Israel directly.

Among them, Nuseiri said that the US - seen as Israel's greatest ally - needed to be weakened politically and economically via attacks on the American mainland, as well as US interests in Muslim countries. Additionally, the existing "Islamic State" needed to expand its borders to cover all of "Greater Syria" (which would include Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and possibly Gaza); such a state, he said, would then be in a position for a direct confrontation with Israel.

Israel does NOT use its own citizens as human shields. Israelis have bunkers to hide and sirens go off in Israel to give its people a chance to hide as Hamas fires rockets to kill Israelis.

It is Hamas which uses its own people as human shields. Hamas even published a manual on the benefits of human shields. They openly state they are proud to die for allah. This is the motto of the Muslim Brotherhood, whether it be Hamas in Palestine or CAIR in America.

Hamas' murderous agenda comes straight from Islamic doctrine, which it even cites in the Hamas Charter. Because of Muhammad's glorification of death, pious Muslims like Hamas glorify death. And just like Muhammad who sent his people to die while he hid, Hamas executives send their people to die while millionaire and billionaire Hamas leaders live in luxury at the expense of Palestinians.

Hamas uses money given to Palestine to build terror tunnels instead of building schools for the children. Hamas instead launches rockets near Palestinian schools and playgrounds. The terror tunnels dug by Hamas, enslaving Palestinian children to build the tunnels costing 160 of these children their lives in the process, was to launch a 9/11 style attack on Israelis on the holy day Rosh Hashanah. The plan was to murder as many civilians as they could, and at least one terror tunnel was dug beneath an Israeli kindergarten to murder kindergarteners.

And people wonder why Israel has to be so focused on defense and the military? Hamas exists to exterminate all Jews!

Even with all of abuse of Palestinian money by Hamas, there is so much money in Gaza that Palestinians have top resorts and recently build a luxury mall stocked with so much food and goods that it would make a US mall envious.

Rahman, I truly hope that through the courts, Hamas will be prosecuted for fraud and abuse of charitable funds .. For building terror tunnels, when he should have built schools, hospitals, etc ..

Those in receipt of international aid must be held accountable .. Also those who fund terrorism ..

Alexa R. (330)

The writer of this piece, Max Blumenthal, doesn't have any credibility and has been caught in lies, for example:

In 2011, Blumenthal wrote a story claiming that Israeli forces trained American police departments in anti-protester techniques, including torture, quoting Fordham University Law Professor Karen Joy Greenberg.[12] Contacted by Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic and Adam Serwer of Mother Jones, Greenberg told Goldberg that "I NEVER MADE SUCH A STATEMENT", while she told Serwer "I did not intend to assert these allegations as fact…the entire sense of the quote is inaccurate."[13][14] Blumenthal responded that he quoted Greenberg accurately and speculated that she had been "intimidated by Goldberg and the pro-Israel forces he represents".[15][16] (wIki)

His supposed equivocation with the Fakestinians is another example of distorted thinking.

Hamas started this war and they aimed for Israeli civilians for years before the Israeli army even got involved. This is stating the result as the cause.

It's also a totally different thing to come back and rest in a civilian area vs. the Fakestinians who FIRE rockets and missiles from in front and on top of civilian buildings,. Anyone who can't understand this self-evident truth is probably noting this article.

The approach of the Fakestinians: LIE first and hope it will be believed. Deny it when proven that they lied.

And to even insinuate in the slightest WHY ISIS does not attack a country that you hate Parsi in order to murder and maim it's people shows one VERY SICK mind!! I mean that is truly pathetic!!

Why Aren't ISIS and Al-Qaeda Attacking Israel? Because they are busy murdering non-Moslems and those who do not agree with them in Iraq and Syria. They have appeared in Gaza and mostly Sinai, but there the Egyptians know how to deal with them - eliminate/exterminate these barbaric people.

"Why do the Palestinians support Hamas?
1. They got sick and tired of the bribery and corruption from Arafat and his PLO cronies.
2. If they don't they get shot.
It's that simple.
By the way, Hamas was elected over 8 years ago. There's been no elections in Gaza since then. Why not?

I quote:

Hamas is one of the two richest terrorist organizations in the world, second only to the Islamic State group, according to Forbes Israel.

To finance their operations, terrorist groups sometime use methods similar to those used by criminal organizations, such as drug trafficking, robberies and extortion, but also raise money through charities, donations and, in some cases, government agencies, according to the report. A terrorist organization, like any other large organization, has a business model to finance its activities: from maintenance, salaries and trainings, to acquiring of weapons and vehicles.

The richest terrorist organization today – and in history – is the Islamic State. According to Forbes, the Islamist group, also known by the acronyms ISIS or ISIL, has an annual turnover of $2 billion. Hamas comes in second, with a yearly revenue of $1 billion.

As for the rest of the list: Colombia's FARC is ranked third with $600 million; Hezbollah is fourth with $500 million; fifth is the Taliban with $400 million; Al-Qaida and its affiliates with $150 million; Pakistani-based Lashkar e-Taiba with $100 million; Somalia's Al-Shabaab with $100 million; Real IRA with $50 million; and, closing the top-ten list is Boko Haram, with $25 million annual revenue.

The U.S. Treasury estimates that ISIS earns $1 million a day from the sale of crude oil from fields it captured in Syria and Iraq. According to Forbes Israel, however, the figure is closer to $3 million a day. The money flow enables ISIS to expand its operations in the Middle East, recruit foreign fighters and train them, among other things.

The report describes Hamas' takeover of Gaza in 2007 as the point from which it entered "the big league." Today, Hamas is now no longer only dependent on donations, but is able to collect taxes from both civilians and businesses. But that's not all. The report says Hamas also takes a cut out of all international aid donated to Gaza by Arab and other foreign countries.

According to the UK's independent:

Islamic State (Isis) militants are taking in more than $3m (£1.8m) a day through oil smuggling, extortion, theft and human trafficking, say intelligence officials and experts.

Aid workers, researchers and intelligence agents say that as the group has taken over sections of Iraq and Syria it now controls as many as 11 oil fields in both countries. It is using generations-old smuggling networks to bring in the trade from oil and other goods. It is also making money from extorting cash from people in the areas they have seized, kidnapping for ransom and from human trafficking.

"There's a lot of money to be made," said Denise Natali speaking about the oil trade. Natali is an American aid official who worked in Kurdistan and is now a senior research fellow at National Defense University. “The Kurds say they have made an attempt to close it down, but you pay off a border guard you pay off somebody else and you get stuff through” she told the Associated Press.

Another expert, an American intelligence official speaking on condition of anonymity said the militant group’s resources exceed that "of any other terrorist group in history,"

The Obama administration is pressing the governments in Kurdish controlled northern Iraq, Turkey and Jordan to do more to crack down on the activity.

As well as selling oil the group has earned hundreds of millions of dollars from smuggling antiquities out of Iraq to be sold in Turkey, al-Khatteeb said, and they are making more from human trafficking by selling women and children as sex slaves.

"Its cash-raising activities resemble those of a mafia-like organization," another US intelligence official said. "They are well-organized, systematic and enforced through intimidation and violence."

Before taking over the town Mosul in northern Iraq in late June the group was “taxing” local economic activity and threatening people who would not pay them. Once it had taken control of Mosul, the group stole millions in cash from banks.

Another source of income comes from kidnapping and ransom. Earlier this year four French and two Spanish journalists held hostage by Islamic State extremists were freed after their governments paid multimillion-dollar ransoms through intermediaries.

Fighters from Islamic State group sit on their tank in Raqqa, Syria Fighters from Islamic State group sit on their tank in Raqqa, Syria The Islamic State group were originally funded by wealthy donors in the Gulf states but this stream of funding has diminished since the group's violent tactics have drawn worldwide attention.

American officials say that that the group’s reliance on oil as their main source income could be disrupted by airstrikes, but no decision has made to target Iraqi or Syrian oil infrastructure, which is manned by civilian workers who might have been conscripted.
