Donald Trump is a distraction from the fact that the mainstream media has pretended the GOP is a normal party with values just to the right. Now the country is paying the price.

Thanks Carrie,

Yes, I often thought out loud what this article is stating: "The MSM continue to treat the Republican Party as if it were just another constellation of ideology and policy — another way of governing the country, even though this campaign season, if not the last 30 years, should have disabused journalists of that notion. Today’s GOP is closer to a religious cult than a political institution. It operates on dogma, sees compromise as a moral failing, views enemies as pagans who must be vanquished, and considers every policy skirmish another Götterdämmerung."

Yes, the media has been in on the Plan to save the Two-Party Illusion. The parties are in on it - they have always saved one another from a natural political death, the 2008 collapse being the last great example. SCOTUS is in on it, too, saving the republican party and the two-party system with its highly political Citizen's United ruling in 2010.

I differ with the following piece of analysis: ".....Part of this is laziness. Part is fear. The press knows that if it were to come right out and criticize the GOP for its denial of climate change, its campaign to deny the LGBT community its civil rights, its efforts to strip food stamps from children.......there will be hell to pay from the right wing, which would invoke the mythical and dreaded “liberal media.”

The 'liberal media' ship sailed decades ago...no matter how the MSM presents its news, it will always be called liberal by republicans.....where do you think Stalk-Radio cam from? The real reasons the MSM keep ACTING as if the republican party is a normal functioning party is: 1) Money 2) Save the Two-Party Illusion

The article's a pleasant read....nothing new, though. The MSM are a big part of the reason we are in such a mess. With "Public Service" friends like them, who needs enemies?!

The Republican Party appears to be a symbol of Corporate Capitalism and the golden age of some notion of the fabled "American Dream".

Perhaps Trump's involvement in politics has thrown their anachronistic ideals into public focus for some.

Noted. Thanks, Carrie.
And, their pandering has caused a shift to the right in the U.S. that is really just an illusion.

The mainstream media, in the hands of not-so-mainstream moguls, have been presenting the public with the false and romantic image of the Republican party in it's golden age, eons ago. It has covered up the real face of GOP in this day and age and has catered to the far-right fringe just as much as the GOP has done. Drumpf is the spawn of this awful marriage and while part of the parents wants to disown him, neither can or do. It's their child after all.

We can also blame the overwhelming IGNORANCE of much of the GOP electorate. Anyone with intelligence can see Trump is all sham....no substance.

We need to teach critical thinking skills, history, CIVICS, etc....to have an informed, knowledgeable nation. No ''creationism,''....SCIENCE. No myth/magic/nonsense....real history. Real economics. REAL understanding of the Constitution.

You think!

Darren also sums it up well and I agree also with Pam - but it isn't just Trump we need to get a grasp onto the Hillary camp is Republican as well; just with a better spokesperson.

Yes. This is what we fell for, in Tony Blair in the 1990s/2000s, and has since been validated by many of his comments since.

Jeremy Corbyn is the real deal in terms of REAL Labour in Britain, which is why most of his MPs who have been fed the Corporate Capitalist diet of diseased, rhetorical bullsh£t, think he should go. THEY'RE really NOT REAL Labour either.

How anyone could THINK and/or BELIEVE Hillary Clinton has YOUR interests at heart, I do not know. I would like a few Hillary Clinton supporters to genuinely tell me WHAT she has done for them, personally. What has she done for "Minimum/Living Wage" campaigners? What has she done for "Environment" supports? Where does she stand on "Fracking"? Where does she stand on "Equality"?

As regards Trump, we know he appeals to a particular kind of crazed right-wing, divide and conquer and protect our self-interests as much as possible, even if it means killing others to do so.

Very scary stuff.

Now it is both major parties that this extreme rightwing elitist 1% is controlling. They also control all other nations. Revolution is the only solution to removing the corruption in the entire system. Europe has begun without us here in the US. But, all nations waited too long. Now, the 1% have their instruments of destruction fortified and in place. The time has purposely been made ripe for incitement into mob rule, giving the steamrolling war machinery an excuse to finish their ongoing genocide of middleclass on down. They need the space we're in and what's left of resources. All they want from the riffraff is their absence. You have a last choice to make. Fight to try to save Earth, all living and remove the corruptors, or go down gently. Thanks Carrie.

The media - they make you or break you...How come that Bernie got just a fraction of publicity compared to the other contestants (that was just a rhetoric question, we all know the answer)

Thanks, Carrie. The media created Trump. I swear that every time he burped they felt they had to report it, and they treated the garbage from his mouth as if he were some authority on everything; even had to ask his opinion on everything. They really took a walk on the dark side with this idiot. Well, I'm with Hillary, there is no way I would ever vote for Trump. I watched every minute of the DNC Convention and was even more encouraged that I was with the right person for the job. The convention was wonderful, full of hope and even gave a voice to those who needed a hand up, or just a hug. Joy all around.

We must vote Dems all up and down the ticket. We need to purge all the republicans possible from our government if we ever want to get our democracy back and get this country moving for us again. It hasn't happened for the past 7 years with the Rs running the Senate and the House of Representatives. They want to cut us off from nearly every program that helps and sustains us.

Good evening and thank you for this article -which i read and noted- YES THERE IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE REPUGS - they are bigoted- sexist and racist look who the picked as their candidate- and look how they changed the platform of the party to taking away all voting rights- woman's rights- civil rights- how they declared that after the election trump would take AMERICA OUT OF NATO - he would ok RUSSIA'S take over of CRIMEA - we would start charging extortion money to our allies for defending them =we would start charging for going to national and world disasters --- trump is encouraging KKK - DAVID DUKE to run for senate from LOUISIANA donald sent his son to mississippi to work up the confederate groups again to get organized in the south - donald jr. went to the same town where 3 young civil rights workers were murdered years ago they are stirring up the old white nazi -skin head- kkk parties to become active and involved ---BE AFRAID BE VERY AFRAID ---get out and register tell your friends and family GO TO THE POLLS IN NOVEMBER AND VOTE ---to keep trump out of the white house and vote democrat down the ticket to take back the house and senate ---that way we can get things done without being stopped by repugs not wanting to work---sincerely KAY M.

It's just like I've been saying on Twitter and Facebook for quite some time now, the oligarchs who owned the networks and newspapers are Republicans and demand that their agendas our first and foremost within their news companies. Anyone who goes against their standards is immediately fired. Their agendas have been growing stronger and stronger towards right-wing white supremacy. They virtually on the Republican Party, and many of the Democrats as well. It's no longer true news reporting, it is white supremacy propaganda being normalized throughout our society via the mainstream news.

There was a time when corporations could not control so much of our media. That has changed and not by accident. This government was created to take control of what is left of our democracy and turn it into a form of dictatorship Face the reality, the 1% controls our media, our economics, and our constitution...peace.
