Thank you, Nancy. I thought DDT was bad. It just keeps getting worse because the vermin that are left are immune so the poison has to get stronger.

There's always natural solutions to these problems, Basil is a natural pesticide, grown next to other crops would reduce the amount of insects attracted to it, thats just 1 example im sure there are millions of herbs and plants that will repel more insects.
Spraying pesticide keeps them off it because you have just poisoned the plant! now you feed us it?
