"We cannot elevate nature above people," explained Edna Mattos, 63, leader of the Citrus County Tea Party Patriots, in an interview. "That's against the Bible and the Bill of Rights."

The Tea party needs to be rounded up and run out of Florida. The drivel that emanates from this dispicable bible thumping hypocrite is simply put intolerable!. Attacking this simple giant of the seas is nonsense wish she was floating on the surface exposed to sharp propeller blades: as much as she deserves to be chopped up and terminated. She is indeed a waste of skin and I wish her not to breathe same air as rest of us humans and animals. To put it into colorfulc terms 'May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your crotch old woman and you writhe on the hot sands in torment for all time and eternity.

"we cannot elevate nature above people"? A good portion of our freshman members of congress are tea party members and if they all think as this conspiracy nut does; is it any wonder why congress cannot agree on anything. The attitude that nature should take a back seat to the desires of people is why we are experiencing the radical changes in our climate and increased abnormal weather. I cannot pinpoint when the nuts took over the asylum, but they seem to be more prevalent than ever before. The Federal Regulators through the Fish and Wildlife true purpose is to enact agenda 21 to turn us from humans into livestock. Really? Methinks thou dost have too much time on thy hands looney tooney.

"Turning humans into livestock" "Holy "Soylent Green" , Batman. Those unholy manatee are involved in a plot with the Great Satan itself, the U.N., to turn us into food. I'll bet that the Penguin is somehow involved in this nefarious undertaking" . Nuke the manatees, now, before it's too late!

I was always suspicious of these herbivores. I think they are planning to take over Florida. They are sleeper cell creatures that once they reach a population of 1000, they will eventually attack. No one will be safe. It will be Independence Day with Wil Smith all over again. Be afraid people, be very afraid!! Afraid of the Tea Partiers, that is.

I have always been offended by the fact that they call themselves the Tea Party. I think they are shaming and embarassing the real members of the first Boston Tea Party. This kind of trivializes our history and I don't appreciate that.

Just let the Seminole tribes take over the kings bay area, they know how to respect their neighbour species. Boot both the Dummycrat commies and socialists and the Repulsivan theocrats and feudalists out, let's get some real leadership in the government, some real representatives on the polls! Vote 3rd party!

well, it is true that we can't elevate nature above people, because people are a part of nature. we didn't get dropped on this earth from the mothership, although with politics like this, one might being to wonder...

Don't Manatees travel in pods like whales? If so, they may very well be pod creatures from space. Anyone who has ever seen any science fiction knows pods develop into acid spewing monsters set on taking over the human race. Since they don't look human and therefore not created in God's image, they don't deserve to be elevated over humans. They look like fish. Probably are fish. Fish don't have rights. It's our "right" to have as much fun wherever /whenever we wanna ! And we wanna !After all we have our God given permission! says so! Taking away our fun-the nerve! We'll hold our breath until the manatees all go away!

Elavate manitees above people! It is ALL ONE WORLD! Against the bible? Didn't Jesus say something like "in so far as ye do unto the least of these you do unto me"--the tea party is a bunch of kooks--dangerous kooks!

Amen, Pamela! All creatures are God's creatures, and human beings were meant to be the caretakers of the animal world. As far as I'm concerned, most people get an F minus for their concern and care for the animal world. All I can say is, their karma will come back to them - and I hope soon!

PS. I too love the manatees. God help them all.

We may need Commissioner Gordon in on this one Batgirl. I had a friend who worked at Homossassa Springs State Park and part of his job involved the manatees' in rehab, some were in permanent care because of injuries that would not allow them to survive in the wild, some were just "hospitalized" for awhile.. He said that they all had distinct personalities, had the bad taste to like human company and were very gregarious. They like to hug and really act a lot like dogs. BTW: Boats cause most of all manatee injuries;, for some reason manatees do ot get out of the way when a boat is coming, Science still doesn't know what causes that non reaction.. To answer Gloria and Hugh, in the winter they hang out at the hot water discharge from the Crystal River Nuclear plant, "so there's your sign".

Uh yeah ,Catherine I have., I lived in Fla for 26 years so I have a passing aquantance with the sea, but then I'm not a sea dwelling mammal., but other sea creatures do manage to avoid boats. Not sure what your ridiculous hostility is all about, but all I was doing was stating a fact, biologists have not pinpointed the reason manatees don't avoid boats.. And just in case you have any doubts,I was an advocate of keeping most of Kings Bay closed to boats when I lived in Fla, in the general vicinity of Kings Bay btw, and also drastically limiting speed in those areas that allowed boats.

As a native of Florida, I must ask, what do all the nuts keep moving down here?? The tea baggers need to get out of Florida and take Scott with you. The manatees are beautiful and only nuts would think that they shouldn't be protected.

A government run by manatees . Hmmmmmmm ... manatees couldn't do any worse.
And the theory of non-reaction in manatees. They are such docile and slow-moving creatures they sometimes just can't move fast enough to escape the blades of a boat motor, etc. Speeding sea vehicles are to blame. The water is the only place manatees can go. People, I'm sorry to say, can and do go anywhere they please, regardless of the impact they have.

PS: I'm no expert on the Bible, but I can not believe that The Creator made this awesome, remarkable Earth with the countless animals and such beauty, for humans to trash. BS! And anyone that uses a book to validate destuctive behavior is blind.

I think the tea-party's got a lot more to worry about than a secret manatee conspiracy.

Janet R., I live in Arizona and often ask myself that same question, "Why do all the nuts keep moving here?" This entire country is slowly being taken over by greedy, ring-wing, elitist, nationalist, nature hating, science doubting, climate change denying, gun-toting, conspiracy theorists. I'm so scared.

richard, your "BTW" comment sounds like an excuse for the boaters. it's like the guy driving across the parking lot and there is a line of ducks crossing in front of him and he doesn't stop and he runs them over because the "ducks got in the way." that line of reasoning is a load. boats shouldn't have the right of way, the manatees should. it's the manatees' home. turn the propeller off and get the paddles out. i really don't give a rat's ass if that is inconvenient to the boaters. most of the boats are used for recreation. who cares if the boaters have to allot a little bit of their time to maneuver safely around the manatees? many of the boaters' attitudes towards wildlife is absolutely shameful. extremely selfish jerks. let's see how they would like their backs getting cut up with a propeller!

I agree, Catherine! Well said. This isn't open sea, for crying out loud! I live in PUget Sound, and there are many Orcas (Killer Whales) which migrate thru here, as well as a resident pod. Whale watching in the San Juan Islands is very popular, but they're now advocating for restrictions on that because it's been proven that the sounds of the boats' props interfere with the whales' ability to navigate and seek out their prey (salmon). It's too bad, because watching these magnificent animals is much preferable than hunting them!

Remember my friend the great state of Florida even threw a presidential election with its electoral votes its indeed a seething hot tropical pit down here! Wackos are carefully cultivated and the popular vote for a president even compromised by skullduggery. My hometown of Key West has the dubious honor of being the richest per capita in our nations history to that of the poorest (Wrecking was once the riches there till Navy built a lighthouse there stopped that lucrative practice. The Depression of the thirties found little for anything to do for profit so it was poorest . Lobster at the time were not eaten only used for grouper bait as traditionally they were considered bottom feeders and not fit to eat. Early settlers from the English held Bahamas had religious views that were somewhat backward.Wasn't until U.S. government again stepped in and recognized commercial value of the plentiful African Rock lobsters, bugs as local called for export to hungry restaurants in Miami that 'normal' prosperity returned there

Wrong again Catherine, that btw was another statement of fact, that I lived relatively close to Kings Bay, so I was well aware of the problem , a concept that seems to be eluding you during your reading comprehension problems. Like the part of my post that said I was opposed to virtually all boat traffic in Kings Bay, it's right there, and that in those areas were they allowed boats, extremely limited speed, as in "NO WAKE". You just lack the personal integrity to apologize for being dead wrong about my post.

It's too bad DianeL. that Catherine's original post from Wed was removed, (it was the hostile one, not mine).,then you might understand why I'm a bit peckish. But that wasn't enough evidently, since she decided to take one more cheap shot on Thur. with her comment about my btw.. My btw about living relatively close to Kings Bay at one time was simply that, a description of where I lived in regards to geographic location. It was not some masked caveat that I supported the teabaggers position at all, although Catherine decided to turn it into one.. Go back and read everything I wrote, and then point out where I supported them. You won't be able too, because I didn't. So if I am unfairly attacked, I will respond in any manner I feel fit . If you feel that I was rude or negative that's your problem, not mine. Especially, when a major part of the original story is missing.

Vows made in Stormy waters are forgotten in calm ones....that being said Richard
does speak the truth... I too was a little put off first time I read his comment.. (personal bias) however having reread it again I realized his comment revealed a problem and was researched and not groundless or off color or anti manatee.. We alll are guilty of making snap decisions the autoimmunity of distant space often overwhelms polite rules of discourse. I have made apologies even to Republicans for brash rude statements I have clicked in anger on my FB days of past... I have many 'friends' of all politics on the now deactivated page trying to keep doors of communication open for the common good. .. I almost blurted out to against Richard but looked at his homepage and reread post and asked him to be friend instead... Catherine is also my friend (hopefully still is ... The point being we are all friends of common cause here this is a not FB environment of touche.. gotcha .... patience in interpreting posts and what people are communicating is of prime import in the Lofty Goals of this fine 'Board'! Indeed the effort to help another in need is the highest goal one can achieve and is self rewarding .. Peace to both my friends and all

No problema... All animal lovers are my friends, just floating around muttering to myself ..... ouch another damn boat scar and I hated tattoos... In fact every manatee in Florida is tracked by the distinctive scars on their backs acquired at an early age those who survive the trauma of course my friends the Save a Manatee club and F.W.C.(Florida Wildlife Commission) share photos of me and my kin...http://www.savethemanatee.org/

I must apologize foe double posting but am not done yet... I have been signing petitions for many years and never wrote any! That has changed recently and i wrote several. I will not deny the cause but did what I had to. I will say that since.... secreted in a foxehole! I miss my watery home and Kings Bay was a fav swim about for me... Activism does not come with out costs at times and twitter and FB have been necessarily denied to me for tracking purposes I switch emails frequently and lose my history here frequently as such... but little matter the cause is only thing that counts in my soggy book. I take my position as a host seriously and police the waters of Care2!Be polite and respect each other its the golden rule! Only one I respect.' Very interesting comments. I tend to side with all those that put the mantee's or orca's or whatever animals over the humans. I think the animals are the eyes and ears of God and that is why they cannot speak so we know who they truly are. As for the Bible putting humans before man, that is not true. There were some 200 translation mistakes from Hebrew to English in the Bible and one of them was that it was written that man does not have Dominion over animals but instead it says man should care for all the animals. With Hebrew as a second language, it's easy to see how mistakes are made like this, but when the computer translated the Bible, it caught a lot of these mistakes. I hate the tea party.
