The reason that farm workers do not get paid a decent wage or get decent treatment is because the consumer in this country demands cheap food. This is why the states turned a blind eye to the illegal immigrants because they were willing to work in the fields for less and under much worse conditions.

People I work with commented that as teenagers they would working the agricultural fields to make money but then the farms began to switch to illegals. Being here illegally they were much easier to exploit. They put up with it because they were making a lot more that they would have in Mexico and the other countries they cam from and the working conditions were not worse than what they contended with in their home countries.

If the laws against hiring illegals are enforced, then economics will dictate that the farm corporations pay a decent wages or they will have not have enough workers. There are more than enough unemployed people in this country who can work in the fields but won't do so until the wages are better.

I don't see that they need more laws in this area - just enforce the ones they have and then there will not be a supply of illegal workers that can be exploited.
