...And many opponents say that the payment is a bribe, and some have even called Project Prevention a revival of the eugenics movement.

amazed I am that right-wingers would fund something that sensible,
1) Earth is severely overpopulated and
2) addicts are about the last ones who should force children into this world (for Earth's sake, humankind's sake, and especialle: for the childrens sake)

Throughout this long article, there was a passing reference to "Republican right wing extremists" who are funding this program. I'm sorry, I need more information than that.
As for this issue, over the years, my school district has had a rise in special needs children who suffer from fetal alcohol addiction, and yes, drug abuse. I do not work in an urban district - it's an middle to upper class community. I can't imagine what is happening in NJ's urban school districts.

U.S. population growth is too high (150 million in 1950; 313 million today; 423 million by 2050). Last year U.S. births exceeded U.S. deaths by more than 1.56 million (this overage was "down" from previous years. Still, nearly 30% of U.S. women (and their male partners) have three or more biological children. This program should be expanded to non-addicts.

I agree with sterilizing drug addicts! In fact more people should be sterilized! First there are too many human beings and lastly a lot of people are not made to be parents but do it anyway and completely screw up these poor kids for life!

Wow, I expected this thread to go another way. My personal feeling is that many drug addicts don't have the ability to make a life altering decision. But I do see both sides. The population is bursting and unwanted and/or children sent to orphanages or on welfare are also a drain to the economy. However, my mind still reverts to bribery into a situation which may not be the proper reality for the future of the addict. I don't have the stats about recovery, that may influence my leaning...
