Last year, a law called the CARD Act took effect. It was meant to protect consumers from misleading credit card practices. Instead, it set the United States back almost half a century. The CARD Act changed the way people - especially stay at home moms -

There are two subtypes of stay-at-home moms (and, increasingly, dads).

The first subtype stays at home for a few years with one or two young children and then returns to work--often for more than 25 years--paying their fair share of social security and medicare. Members of this subtype should at least be able to maintain credit levels they have already established.

The second subtype is a perpetual stay-at-home for 40 or more years. She will receive Non-Working Spousal social security old age benefits and "free" Medicare Part A without having personally and directly contributed to these programs at all. Since she (or he) will accept benefits paid for by workers without contributing her (or his) fair share, in effect she (or he) will be receiving welfare. Why should credit card companies give her (or him) credit in her (or his) own name since she (or he) has chosen to continue childhood dependency status?

some of us remember when positive credit women had accrued became their husband's upon marriage in the way credit agencies handled things--and upon becoming a widow or divorced, had to start over because their own histories and joint histories were treated as his........
