The Supreme Court decision would give Arizona law enforcement new tools to separate families and violate civil rights, but it can only happen if the federal government agrees to process and deport SB1070's victims.

Thank-you Nancy. Glad to sign to send a strong message. I think the vigilance and protection that the petition seeks is excellent. Federal law already gives all law enforcement agencies the right to ask ICE for this information during processing. I interpret today's ruling differently than i'm hearing it reported on the news. The substance and essence of Arizona's law has been struck down as unconstitutional. The ruling is consistent with federal law and previous court opinions. It sends a very strong message to Arizona that the court is watching how the lone provision will be used. That provision is left because the court could not rule it violated existing federal law as it essentially parallels it the way it is written. If "papers please" results in racial/ethnic profiling, or other abuses, i think the Court will strike it as well. The Arizona Governor is ignorant as always in her remarks. Of course the grossly inept Scalia is not forming synapses for coherent thoughts...as usual. I do not mean to discount the potential for abuse and the fear that instills. Everyone who cares needs to be on these miscreant elected officials like white on rice. I just see the door wide open for the remaining provision to be struck down as well. . .hopefully before any undue harm to families occurs.

NOTE: The ruling today on Montana's state election law is egregious and devastating. Once again displaying the gross incompetence of several sitting so-called U.S. Supreme Court Justices. Citizens United ignores over a century of precedent Federal and Supreme Court case law while following a line of reason that in fact is erroneous interpretation of a very narrow ruling to afford 14th amendment due process rights for jurisdictional purposes ONLY and includes reference to a Court Clerk error [intentional perhaps--hindsight certainly presents that possibility.]

The supreme court acts more and more like THEY own these United States--it's sometimes hard to believe that they don't, along with their corporate buddies.
But the fact is, "we the people" still own our Land--and maybe it's time for a new understanding--we badly need to find a way to restore order!

NOTE: We grew up with "migrant" workers in our communities in the 1950's. As kids we knew many were not "documented." Most left during winter--some stayed on. When i lived in Utah we all learned Spanish in gradae school to improve communication with the migrant community. We fought for their rights to decent working/living conditions in the 1960's and 1970's.
This is part of our history as a nation and has been sanctioned off the record for generations--now the GOP are playing political games for their God forsaken so-called base of hypocritical racist religious fanatical greed mongers. This must stop. People without papers are HUMAN BEINGS that WE encouraged to come here and work for cheap. DO NOT ALLOW THIS RACIST DEPORTATION PLAN by caucasians who are simply afraid they won't be a controlling, fear mongering majority much longer. They 're just scared they will get treated as selfishly and bad as they've treated others. A bunch of whiners and bullies on the grade school playground...i know them oh so well. We are counting on you. Please stand strong for our immigrant neighbors and. . .the truth.

thanks Nancy .I'm in utter disbelief that they upheld this gestapo law.I'm native to america and now have to worry about being profiling? I have lost my desire to stay in Arizona. Between the stupid laws and the valley fever they should declare the state uninhabitable to anyone with a brain.

Signed. Thanks Nancy. SB1070 is a travesty and an ill-conceived piece of crap legislation drafted up by conservative nationionalists with chips on their shoulders and political agendas to further. But that's to be expected in Arizona where most people's compassion and intelligence is in direct contrast in the size of the guns they carry.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it will not take action when receiving calls from local police unless the person arrested meet priorities for deportation. ICE's priorities include illegal immigrants who have been convicted of serious crimes and those who pose a threat to national security.

"ICE will not issue detainers unless they meet priorities," a Department of Homeland Security senior official said.
