Obama Ignores Huge Dangers in Approving Arctic Drilling Permit for Shell

Environment  (tags: arctic, environment, ecosystems, world, climatechange, globalwarming, wildlife, animals, humans, nature )

"Scariest of all, the Obama administration is allowing Shell to go forward without even having the promised oil-spill containment equipment in place." This saddens and infuriates me. I'll try to keep you posted.

People would rally behind Obama more if he'd just go LEFT. Like what we voted for in 2008. Right now he's Right of Nixon. Who cares what the right wants. It's their turn to compromise for a change.

Obama Said NO DRILLING IN THE ARTIC, then gave the OK...Didn't shock me one little bit.

This will be the Disaster of all Disasters! My Heart Aches for all of these creatures...they have enough to endure, now this!

Green star to Roseann D - I quite agree! FDR said that he welcomed the hatred of the Right as that proved he was on the right track - President Obama seems to be trying to get them to like him - what utter folly!

Agree with you too Nancy - have signed everything I can ....

I thought Obama would stand up to big business and protect the environment. It is too bad, as Rosanne said, he does not realize the people would back him. Elections do funny thing to the bravest of people.

I would imagine that Obama now does not want to rile any right wing industrialists and so is saying yes to the drilling in hopes of more support. It is disappointing.

We voted for Obama because we thought he would stand up for the environment. Instead, he has capitulated over and over again and now this. It is sickening. Do ANY politicians listen to us anymore? Really? Think about it....does your vote really make a difference?

I was angry and disappointed to see this the other day. Sometimes it feels like he panders to the Republicans so they'll let him play. It's like he is saying 'see, he isn't so left wing-he's doing what the same thing we would'. Revolting it is. If Romney wins (can you feel me tremble?) it will be even worse. the apocalypse may very well come or so it feels.

Noted, tweeted and shared. It's our misfortunate that the election is near; Obama may be a progressive and interested in the environment, but he wants to be president. Too many people would say that he was hurting jobs and forcing oil prices higher. We have to pray that nothing happens to harm our environment before the election. After that, we can put more pressure on, and he can do the environmentally right thing without worrying about his election.

Some of you guys still believe in Change...Look what has happened!!! Ken Salarzar...Umm Worthless POS now this!

Change in your pockets and Obama loves to fly around on Air Force One to yank taxpayers and bring the USA to their knees.

He PROMISED NO DRILLING...Changed Mind! Which ever the wind blows I guess!

Obama has every right to insist that the spill containment equipment be present before drilling which would mean that it wouldn't happen this year. That would the common sense approach. This proves to me that Obama doesn't give a rat's ass about the environment. The environment is screwed no matter which idiot becomes president in November. I am wondering when DC is going to wake up and realize that humans cannot exist if the earth is permanently damaged by human greed and stupidity.

My disappointment with the Pres. I voted for began not long after his oath of office when he backtracked on Gitmo and then was silent when those speaking in favor of "single payer/public option" were physically ejected from the initial meeting on healthcare reform, (which turned out to be health INSURANCE reform). And the disappointments kept coming. I just wish he'd stop lying to his base. So, on top of NDAA, this is outrageous. But I'd never even consider voting for Willard. So, I'm logging onto the website and leaving a message....polite, but honestly expressing my disapproval. Petitions and form letters are great....I sign them all---but a "personal" message from many, (and phone calls), takes it to another level.

Goodness ~ This is Such a Disappointment for those that Voted for Obama that want to PROTECT OUR ENVIORNMENT...Ken Salazar, Giddy up Enough of you backyard deals and pockets full of Ranchers $$.

Drilling in Alaska was PROMISED BY OBAMA NOT GOING TO HAPPEN ~ just Another LIE!

For those of you that wrote Mitt won't be good for the Environment....Please just take a peek at the last 4 you really want another 4 of Horse Slaughter, drilling for Oil that Opps won't go to the USA, and a President that BOWS down to our enemies???

I'm so confused where of this LOVE FOR OBAMA comes from. Look please at the Facts...Not going to post them all out there guys, but it hurts my heart...Promises..Not Kept. Change. OMGoodness, How much longer would you believe in HOPE. Hope/Change IS NOT HERE...The USA IS FURTHER IS DEBT THAN EVER. Proven Fact.

I don't usually get involved with POLITICAL NEWS and do try my best to keep away since if I spoke my mind I would be Banned like so many others have. It is quite distressing to see so many people with news about Obama and the other sides news gets smacked down and no notes. Not FAIR..

THE USA IS TWO PARTIES...GUYS YOU HAVE TO TAKE A PEEK AT BOTH SIDES ~ If you Love Obama then Vote that way. But Please get FACTS...I am not happy with my choices and I have said that before, but personally I will VOTE FOR MITTENS (as some of you have called him) not a third party since that will just give more vote for Obama.

I would like the USA TO be the Country I grew up in and PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN...Not have a President that Bows to an Enemy. ENOUGH!

We used to be a COUNTRY that had Morals and People that LOVED TO BE FREE...Sadly, so many Government controls have taken place.

BTW...For anyone that doesn't know this in your State (If you Live in the USA) Fires, Floods, etc...Obama put into effect he will take over your Safe Deposit Box ~ You have no Control anymore...

Sound like a Free State???? I know I will be killed for speaking my mind ~ what is left of it, but this is quite sad!

I agree that this is for election funds and votes. I'm just so disappointed. Seems that we get a positive and a negative at the same time to appease us. We just heard of the new mileage goal for cars and now this. I truly hope he has not been threatened. Obama is a smart man, but I'm beginning to question his wisdom.

So very disappointed in the Obama Administrations decision but, let's grow up here you who continue to call him a Kenyan or a Muslim, your racism is worn on your sleeve and thus many of your comments fall on deaf ears. What he has or has not done has nothing to do with his race or religion so stop acting like little brats will you? I will take a guess that you also don't think he was born in Hawaii right????

I agree this decision could be because of the upcoming election and we may be able to put pressure on after Nov 2012 but the pressure should be on Obama, never the "r" twins who have promised nothing but taking our country back to the 1800's or before that. You think drilling is bad for the artic, so do I but I think taking away medical benefits, Pell Grants, labor rights, abortion rights, gay rights, etc. along with what the repubs would do to the enviorment is much much worse and not to mention what a repub win will mean for SCOTUS, you know the one's who made corporations people? There is no other choice but Obama and he'll get my vote.

Charlene Rush (79)

There must have been some sort of deal, President Obama had to make on another issue, for this to have had happen.
Everything comes with a price.

To Carlene V.: You couldn't be more correct. This whole elecion business is bas on 'racism'. It's quite sad to admit, but the Romney/Ryan ticket wouldn't even be in contention, is our President was not 1/2 black.
It's horribly disgusting, when a country's people desire to see themselves as the world's leader.

GET A GRIP. We are seen as a group of backward, foolish idiots, by lmany.

Nancy C (806)

I still believe we are the majority and are made to believe we're under the bus. I also believe that climate change, which is influenced by our earthly disruptions such as drilling and fracking is coming to a dangerous curve whereby if we don't act seriously NOW, we won't need any social services in a century. We'll need thermal suits or another planet to inhabit. I searched but could not find whose story this was, but have this important news link:
Global Warming's Terrifying New Math

Whether or not I vote for Obama or a third party candidate is still a toss up--but I couldn't ever live with myself if I voted for Willard. His party platform is completely anti-woman; and if you think we're fighting on every issue of saving our environment now, see what happens if Willard actually gets elected. That party doesn't even believe in the premise of climate change! He is so firmly in the pocket of Corporate America and Banksters that we in the 99% will be completely ignored in our pleas. I believe that Obama, at least, has a conscience in there somewhere....Willard left his in the dust long ago.

Craig Pittman (52)

I do agree that Obama has a conscience and hope and pray it will come to rule him.............he must get rid of Salazar and put into place someone who actually loves our mustangs, our wolves, our burros; all the wildlife which is not for trophy hunting. And someone who is not bought and sold by the ranchers!

We cannot allow drilling in the arctic...there has to be a huge public outcry! There has to be! Obama will loose his left base if he allows drilling without safety measures in place....we really thought he was pro-environment....we were all so happy that things were going to change.....Gitmo was to be closed; torture was to end; wars were to be stopped, not just moved to another country; the patriot act was to be abolished; freedom of the press was to reign; the mustang and burro roundups were to stop; irresponsible logging was to stop, the wolves were to be protected, not de-listed; fracking was to end; solar was to be king; we were to have a health care system as do the Europeans; boy......were we gullible! And, those of us who actually trusted that he would do what he said...are we idiots for believing that a man stands by his word?
Where are the men and women who actually do what they said they would?

Why do we have millionaires wanting to run this country? How could they ever be qualified when they think only of themselves and have absolutely no idea what the average person actually does to keep a roof over his/her head? Read books about the poor in America and the rest of the world?? Yeahhhh, that's good! Mitty is against everything we worked so hard for in the 60's...we will go back to the dark who do we vote for? One who did not fulfill his promises or one who is totally from the dark ages? I'll go for the first and then hope again and again he comes to his least stand by the mustangs and burros, the wolves, the arctic, and then we'll talk...

The Republicans, of course, celebrate their lack of sensible environmental policies, but what is going on with the Dems? Why doesn't the Democratic Party come out swinging against climate change and other environmental dangers? Why has the President not only cleared the way for Shell to proceed with killing our planet, but has also, in case anyone had forgotten, fast-tracked the construction of the southern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline? How many more decades are progressives willing to pour their support into a party that is just as committed to exploitative capitalism as the Republicans are? The two parties only system of government has to be brought to a grinding halt. We need parties that truly represent the environment and the people, and that, through proportional representation, have, at least, a seat or two at the table.
