If some proposals at WCIT are approved, decisions about the internet would be made by a top-down, old-school government-centric agency behind closed doors.

Governments from around the world will soon gather in Dubai at the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), where they will negotiate a binding international treaty that could change the internet as we know it.

Several countries are proposing to expand the powers of a government-dominated institution, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Some proposals could legitimize monitoring and blocking online traffic. Others threaten privacy, seek to impose new fees for accessing content, or could very well slow down connection speedsĻ.

Governments in Latin America to Africa to Asia are expressing doubt about these proposals, and we've been told that hearing directly from their citizens could sway their vote. Together with Fight for the Future≤, Access has put together a video to mobilize the global internet to call on our governments to oppose handing over key decisions about the internet to the ITU.

Letís use the internetís global reach to save it. Watch and share the video by clicking the link below, and sign this urgent petition

We love the internet.

And weíre guessing you do too. Think about all the awesome things it gives us: A vast communication network; innovative businesses; a platform to freely speak or challenge powerful governments; and hundreds and hundreds of hours of cat videos.

All this great stuff is available because the internet was designed in an open and inclusive way, with a multitude of voices being able to get a say on how itís governed.
But the internet is in danger.

Thereís a meeting between the worldís governments in a just a few weeks, and it could very well decide the future of the internet through a binding international treaty. Itís called the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), and itís being organized by a government-controlled UN agency called the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

If some proposals at WCIT are approved, decisions about the internet would be made by a top-down, old-school government-centric agency behind closed doors. Some proposals allow for access to be cut off more easily, threaten privacy, legitimize monitoring and blocking online traffic. Others seek to impose new fees for accessing content, not to mention slowing down connection speeds. If the delicate balance of the internet is upset, it could have grave consequences for businesses and human rights.
This must be stopped.

Only governments get a vote at WCIT, so we need people from all around the world to demand that our leaders keep the internet open.

Watch the video, and take action above to tell your governments to oppose handing over key decisions about the internet to the ITU. Letís use the internetís global reach to save it.

ITU - I can think of some initials that might provide a better acronym. People going about the business of living their lives, talking on the Internet, reading or watching videos (very good video, here) and THEY just have to find a way to screw it all up.

I for one will strongly oppose anyone or anything who expresses any intent to control or curtail my right to freedom of speech and thought and action - or to choose.

I would rather die on my feet a free man than live on my knees a slave.
