It's really crazy to see what is happening to even the Postal Service. What happens when the grid goes down and email is unable to be viewed and our post office is extinct. ty

Signed, Nancy. I try to help out the PO by sending garbage back in the pre paid envelopes the banksters keep sending with credit card applications. I had a job where postage pre-paid registration cards were sent out and when the bill came from the PO it showed that the rate was more than if a stamp had been put on hope by now they have to pay double the going rate. Happy New Year.

So many outrages, I begin to wonder if part of the neoCon plan is to burn us out - there seems to be no limit to the injury they seem willing to inflict and insanity display.

Naturally, once the Post Office is gone, private companies can hike rates through the roof, while paying minimum wage to their workers...

The GOP merely wants to bust the Postal Union by forcing the system into insolvency. The postal service is forced to pay billions for retirement funds 75 yrs into the future. No private company is forced to do that. This requirement has to be changed. The GOP is despicable in it's war on worker rights and benefits. Please remember this come next election. We cannot afford a self-serving and corrupt congress any longer.

Olivia that is such an obvious idea, but you know what it's so simple nobody thinks of it. LOL I so agree, I feel silly right now because I honestly have never given that even a thought. An no Allan I am with you, I still depend on the post office. I refuse to trust this machine with my numbers, LOL. NO WAY, so I will be saving them envelops now. Thanks everyone.

The person responsible for this is Darrell Issa, a g o p puke representative from California. He inserted a phrase, clause to cause the big financial crisis to the Post Office, the USPS. Before Issa had done anyting, the USPS was doing just fine.

Issa did this for two reasons: to destroy one of the largest union and to help his buddy, the CEO of FedEx.

"Enter Darrell “I Stole Several Autos” Issa, who recently introduced the Postal Reform Act of 2011, the boldest and craftiest attack ever on the Postal Service that didn’t involve anthrax. Not surprisingly, the Tea Party is on board. At 132 pages, Issa’s bill is a bit longer than his rap sheet, and the crimes therein are considerably more sophisticated as well."

"Incredibly, the small-government fiscal realist Republican wants to set up two new agencies to oversee the Postal Service, and authorize billions more in borrowing. As USPS said in a recent statement:"

"“We strongly oppose a provision in the bill that provides for an additional $10 billion in borrowing authority from the U.S. Treasury. The Postal Service does not need to incur additional debt — we need the money back that is already owed to us. We also strongly oppose sections of the bill that would create more government bureaucracy and slow our progress on streamlining our operations.”"

"In a nutshell, Issa’s plan is to not let the Postal Service fix itself. Issa’s plan is to set up two new agencies—one to smash the Postal Service into a wall and one to sell off the pieces. One to loan them money and one to slap their hands for taking it. One to force them into bankruptcy and one to “renegotiate” salaries and collective bargaining agreements afterward."

Facts about the Postal service - USPS

Some Facts You May Not Know About The United States Postal Service

The party that’s always yelling about the Constitution is choosing to conveniently ignore it when it comes to this.

On Facebook: ARM (The Anti-Republican Movement)'s Page

The United States Postal Service:

- Receives NO taxpayer dollars and is funded by the products and services it sells.
- Handles more than 40 percent of the world's mail.
- Has a workforce that is made up of 40 percent women, 40 percent minorities, and 22 percent veterans, many disabled.
- Is one of the few government agencies explicitly authorized by the United States Constitution.

There is a crisis, but it is not because the Postal Service is inefficient and its workers overpaid.
It is because the Postal Service:

- Is the only federal agency or private company required to pre-fund retiree health benefits for 75
years due to the 2006 PAEA (Postal Accountability Act) put forth by Republicans in congress and
signed into law by George W. Bush. Without OAEA, the USPS would still face a challenging future,
but it would be facing it with ZERO debt, and a 15 billion credit line. Republicans refuse to modify
the trust requirement for one simple, and very cynical reason: the "trust fund" is "on budget", while
the USPS is not. Te trust funds don't do anything to "guarantee" future health benefits- they serve
only to transfer some of the federal deficit to the USPS, artificially lowering the government's
accumulated debt. The USPS's immediate problem isn't the internet or the unions- it's the age old
problem of politicians with their hands in the till.

This is dismal news to me. Too many of our under appreciated social norms are going the way of the dinosaur, ever try to find a public phone these days?

What do we need a government for if they renege on all their obligations?
Katrina spelt it out plainly, very loud & clear, the government disdains us, we're on our own.

Did you know that USPS & sometimes FedEx can dump their loads on the "regular" post office to deliver the final leg of the journey? Also, not all post offices are created equal - in Illinois, Kinmundy's inside office (to buy stamps & send packages) is open 8-11:30 Am. & 1pm.-4pm. Mon.-Fri., so anyone working 8-5 is screwed, while in Alaska the Wassila office is open 24 hr./7 days a week!

Even though I just had eye surgery and I am struggling to read this article and type a comment, this particular issue is very important to me, so I have signed the petition and I am pasting the comment here that went with my petition here. Thank you for posting this story, Nancy. Biggest thanks to Olivia for telling me about it.

The US postal service does a remarkable job for which it deserves great praise, NOT attempts such as have been made by private interests, to privatize it and use it as a means to gain profit. From much personal experience, I know that we in the US have the very best - and the cheapest - postal service of any other country. Countries that have even partial privatized postal service have service FAR substandard to ours. We are spoiled with the cheap rates and the wonderful service we get from these public servants. We should do everything we can to support them.

Moreover, Congress needs to stop trying to make the postal service appear as though it is running a deficit. That is a fraud on the American people. The only "deficit" is fictional and exists solely because Congress is insisting that it maintain a retirement fund that is 75 years in advance - decades before future postal employees will even be born. NO other BUSINESS is required to do that. Nor could most businesses maintain such a fund and remain viable. I have done a great deal of research and I have discovered that the demands for this fund are the plot privateers are using to denigrate the post office, making it appear as though it is incompetent and costing the American people millions of unnecessary dollars. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Americans are tired of being fed lies by those who wish to make a buck on everything they can, including the foundations and institutions of our own government. Enough is enough! If Congress wants to dismantle something that doesn't work, it needs to start with itself.

Dear MoveOn member, Thank you for signing my petition yesterday, "Save Our Post Office. "
TU Nancy. What my wife didn't mention is that she also helps the PO (and feels really good) by sending junk mail in their pre-paid envelopes to Repulicons who ask for money (and I think she sent Mitt a penny with a nasty comment). I help the PO by sending most everything I sell on eBay by USPS.

Yvonne White (229)
Tuesday January 1, 2013, 9:28 pm
I know the USPS is part of the Post Office - but what I'm saying is that the USPS is a different arm of the Postal Service (like FOX News is to the GOP) & they have the newer Service Trucks, while rural carriers use their own vehicles. I can send my packages from the Kinmundy PO, then it gets picked up
by USPS & taken to Centralia, IL. & goes whatever route They use from there to where I sent it. The Regular mail goes to Springfield or Chicago from Kinmundy for sorting..Salem's goes to St. Louis, MO. for sorting. So I send Letters/Bills from Kinmundy if it goes North or East & from Salem if it goes West or South of here.. It can mean an extra day or 2 delivery time depending on the approx. 10 mile difference in the town it's sent from!

The post office has always been a profitable agency for the federal government and one which usually subsidizes money-losing agencies. The problem is that Congress passed legislation in 2008(?) which forces the post office to fund the pension plan 75 years into the future in 6-10 years time!! This forces the post office to fund pensions for people not even born yet

I signed and left this comment:

The Republicans always talk about wanting small Government then they help pass legislation in Washington that now has put the Post Office into crisis. Why didn't you leave well enough alone? This ISN'T the Post Office fault it is politicians with special interests in mind that set out to destroy the Post Office. Un-do your damage!

Good job Jim offering the additonal information and petitions that others may not be aware of. Allan I still pay my bills via the mail system. I personally don't trust the online with my information, too many hackers.

Noted, signed and shared. IMO, we're always going to need the US Postal Service.
I like the idea of re-sending the pre-paid envelopes--sorry to say I never thought of doing it, but I will now!
The repugs NEED to be stopped, somehow--they are like a cancer on our system--sapping all the life out of it, while spreading pain and death. I'm not trying to be dramatic, this is actually how I see (most of) them. They've been allowed to rattle around Washington far too long, become far too comfortable, and (no doubt) now see all they desire as somehow being OWED to them.
