While it is true that people kill people, and that guns do not shoot themselves, it is also true that mass execution would not be possible without such high capacity weapons. How many people have to die before we ban those weapons?

Signed. I will never understand American gun culture., the NRA or why so many Americans own guns. Perhaps a little non-gun crazy education is needed?

If they want to use assault weapons, they can join the military. We need Congress to get the guts to reinstate the ban. I know they are getting all kinds of threats, but they are nothing compared to the victims who stared down the barrel of these weapons, like little children. People with guns kill people. Thanks for the post, my friend.

Thank you so much for all the links, Nancy. I signed them all and will continue to for as long as it takes. I was horrified to learn that Harry Reid removed the Assault Weapons Ban and ban on multiple clips from the bill. And recently, I learned that he's considering removing the background checks as well. So, I'm wondering what the purpose of it could possibly be with all the important legislation removed! Where is common sense?

You can't appeal to the moral values of our legislators or the NRA, because they vanished, long ago. The NRA listens to no one, not even their own members. _GREED_ is the only thing that matters. Our legislators listen, only, to those who put money in their pockets.

TERM LIMITS are the 'only' answer, and we know they will never inflict this on themselves. They have such power over us, and we don't have the guts to get rid of them.

To Lois Jordan: In answer to your question ~
The common sense went out the window, along with the moral values.

Speaking of moral values, how about we, not ASK, but DEMAND, that our legislators that want to half spending start with themselves. What better way is there is SET A GOOD EXAMPLE?
Their 'perks' are extraordinary and a great deal could be wipes from their expenditures.

We all know, regardless of their financial situation when arriving in Congress, they leave millionaires. Gee I wonder how that happens.

What I'd like to know is why we're even still having this conversation. Haven't we seen enough violence from guns? If guns weren't available, sure, malicious people could find alternate means to kill, but far less easily, far less effectively, and with far less impact or damage. If assault weapons weren't available, gun-wielders would have to reload more frequently, which could give others a chance to wrest away control of the gun. However, I don't suspect such rational thoughts and reasoned analysis cross the minds of the people whose interest it is in to maintain the growth of the gun population. To them, the Second Amendment is a wild card enabling them to do whatever they want, essentially. And that was NOT what the drafters of the Constitution intended!

So whatcha gonna do when only the criminals have guns? And they will have guns. You can buy them off the street. Whatcha gonna do when they break into your homes to rape and/or torture your children while you have no weapon?

Taking away the assault weapons sounds like a good idea. The reality is it's one giant size step toward taking away more of our freedoms such as the right to bear arms and whatever other freedom they can bamboozle away.

That's what's losing our freedoms now. Big Brother, I'm scared. Take care of me.

And all Big Brother asks is to give up all your constitutional rights, one right at a time.,,,then five rights at a time then .... "Where did you get those chains on your feet?"

Think on it.

People who are against any level of gun control often like to point out the U.S. as having a gun culture. A society's culture, however, can and does change. Unfortunately it probably takes a generation or so to change a culture, but it can be done. I think the change in attitude towards guns is slowly changing now. Not so many laws are needed if the culture changes.

The 'logic' of Zee that 'if you take away assault weapons then it is one giant step toward taking away more of our freedoms such as the right to bear arms...and other freedoms' is not logic. It is an exaggerated extrapolation. And putting it all under some generality of a label of 'big brother' is kindergarten reasoning..

You don't have all the freedom you want regarding anything Zee living in a democracy with other people. You can't drive any vehicle you want down the road, you can't drive it any old way you want, you can't build a house any way you want, you can't do whatever you want in your house, or on your property, there are tons of laws and bylaws about everything.
Why aren't you complaining you can't own a rocket launcher or rig your house with explosives and wire-trip devices? That would protect you even more wouldn't it?
There is such a thing as paranoia.

The only people here that make sense to me are:
John S. - Thank you. You nicely tie up the problem.

Zee Kallah – Big Brother – Military Industrial Complex – You name it. You get the nail on the head award.

June t. - Culture change is pointing toward the true solution. I love it.

Barbra K. - Ouch. Give those guys and gals in the military assault weapons so they can wreak mayhem. Just as long as it isn't in you back yard! You my Left Wing Nut Sheeple silver star award for Bleating platitudes.

Sheila D. - I am glad you and Barbra K. are on the same page. Keep those nasty assault weapons in “war zones”. That is really well thought out.

Lois Jordan – The common sense is that these (mostly) corrupt, self absorbed politicians are making serious and reasoned decisions! Amazing!
It is a fairly well accepted fact that our government is totally dysfunctional.
Who then is going to pass intelligent laws that will cure the bogus, non-issue of guns ruining the nation?

Jeremy S. - I get tired when I hear your brand of bleat. You all speak about guns like they were alive and did things on their own! “Violence from guns”? “Gun population”? Do they mate and have baby guns?

I wish I could draw. Every time I hear the term “gun violence” I have a visual of a pack of cartoon guns running around with crazed looks blazing away at everything that moves.
Only sheeple could think that guns can somehow do anything violent.

Your type of distraction with the phony “gun violence” issue is a sad statement of our society today.
They feed us propaganda and we eat it like candy. The fear grows in us and we look for simple answers which they feed us to calm our imaginary fears they have led us to believe. When I think about this I get dizzy.

David B. - When I hear people like you I have the despairing thought that most Americans are stupid.

Kenneth L. - Your long winded babble makes zero sense. Rocket launchers and booby traps on your home. I smell heavy paranoia!

We must all work together and find real solutions to this sad state of affairs.
This problem is ALL about our Culture of Violence here in the good ol USA.
Violence is a disease. Until we as a people realize this and demand funding to treat this epidemic we are bound to continue down this sad path.

As a good start I propose we outlaw war. We are using our endless wars to spread this disease world wide. It is no wonder we experience the disease so often. We are the host for the most part!

Everyone else in here gets my - Left Wing Nut Sheeple lead star award for Bleating platitudes. The lead star denotes you didn't put any thought into your bleat at all.

Pray for peace.

I am taking a break from politics and politicians. They took out the assault ban from the bill and I am in a very disappointed, even a hating frame of mind and I rarely go there so I have lost my faith in the whole damn thing. Both sides give me reasons to conclude there just isn't any justice or good guys left. I'm so very glad I don't own any weapons, single bullet or massive output right now.

It would serve them right if some teit with an assault weapon went nuts in congress, right side of the asle, of course. I don't support the death penalty but....it certainly would get their attention and maybe if they had more to worry about than the NRA primarying them then they would do what America wants.

I disagree. I am very glad that the ban was taken out. What is more important is the out of state big money donors bypassing the voters and exporting their ideas on the hapless voters. Money talks and big money screams. What is needed a tax supported election with big donors and corporations out of the loop. To get elected it costs a great deal of money. When your representative owes a donor or corporation they expect legislation favorable to them, not to the voters.

There is no reason to have an assault weapon. You always hear the NRA or other Assault Weapon loving dum-dums ranting about just as many deaths are a result of cars. If we allow this small group of ignoramuses to win this then where does the access to weapons in our society end? The next it will be to allow people the right to build bombs and perhaps carry them around? After all don't we have the right to privacy in the bubble of the 4th Amendment to protect us from unlawful search and seizure? The point is we must draw the line in the sand and stand by it once and for all. We have seen enough mass killings for a lifetime - what are we going to allow this country to become - a war zone? We are doing al-gaeda's work on our own people. We must become untied as a people in peace instead of destruction.
