Each year in South Dakota the state Department of Social Services (DSS) takes over 700 American Indian children away from their families and tribes. 90% of these children are put into non-Native foster homes and institutions--in direct violation of the...

"The trail of tears" NEVER ENDS! The native Americans were killed off by the Europeans since the first thanksgiving dinner. Eat and kill great Puritan Christian thinking. Four hundred years later and the destruction is STILL GOING ON! If it is not just the bureau of land management that keeps screwing over the native Americans, all the casinos on their lands are not really owned by them, for survival most tribes have had to lease the lands out to major fucorporations and they get a small percentage back. Look at what jack abramoff did to them. The financial ripoff perpetrated by abramoff is what landed his sorry ass in jail. The irony that an Orthodox Jew would call native Americans "troglodytes" is beyond belief, especially about a group of people who have suffered the same genocide the Jews have suffered.

If this was done to white children, there would be a tremendous outcry. These innocent first people's children should be with their own family with whatever support is required to help them thrive.

Do not care what name the state gives it......In reality this is "Child Slavery"......And the state accepts the money.....Were do these "adults" come from?????? One mutant every now and then is scientifically
possible, altho not probable......BUT...here we have an entire network of mutant humans.!!!! They have no compassion, no integrity, no ethics, nothing within,,,other than greed. Someone in this state needs to be the VOICE of these children.....Please stand up before more children are "used and abused" !!!!!!!

This disturbs me to my very soul now and always has. The US runs to the defense of peoples all over the globe to support and protect from being abused, terrorized and earmarked for genocide. Then in our own country do the opposite. They have done to the American Indian the exact same thing but seem to think that's OK. What hypocrites. They only stole everything from them and continue beating them down even till today. I hope the future holds only good things for our precious Native Americans. They so deserve it.

Noted and signed. Thanks, Nancy. I may not have Native American blood, but I have nieces, nephews, and cousins who do. There's no way children should be taken from their parents except in extreme cases where the children are in danger or their parents have abandoned them. This reminds me too much of Australia when they took all the aborigine children away to make them more like the English. The lost generation. I don't think they ever did recover.

Thank you Nancy for promoting this. I had placed this on C2 News myself awhile back, so I'm glad you were able to circumvent the duplications and that C2 allowed you to do so, or we used different links.

I don't place much on my Shares, but this is one Petition I do have on there so is seen from my profile page. The ongoing Genocide never ends.

Make no mistake about it, this is genocide. When there are no more Indians then there is no more Indian "problem" that this Government wishes would go away.

This is outrageous the way the first people that occupied this Country are being treated violating our own agreement with them. It reminds me of the writing in our Bible. "If they do it to a dry tree what about a green tree ". People with no feelings for others do not care about anyone but self. Those who see nothing wrong with the way these people are being treated you just may have a turn yourself.

I don't know of ANY child protection service that ACTUALLY PROTECT CHILDREN. I know this from my own experience of being in their "care" then later in life, working at a shelter for battered women and children.

I don't understand this. How can this be happening in this day and age. I hope this changes soon. Sad What is wrong with this government. It is always best to leave children with their family no matter what. Unless of course they might be harmed in any way. This seems like a case of just taking the children away.

". . .Neither of us will make compulsory laws or interfere in the internal affairs of the other. Neither of us will try to steer the other's vessel."

The true history of the US and 1st Nations people is seldom told. . .Two Row Wampum Belt, Silver Covenant Chain of Friendship, Council Fires and the the Great Tree of Peace should be remembered. . .

Two Row Wampum Belt. . .

"Gustwenta is about four feet long and has two dark rows of beads to show the two governments as separate but equal. One row represented the white man's ship that contained all of his culture, religion, and laws. The other row represented the Iroquois in their canoe, with all of their traditions, beliefs, and laws. It was called the Covenant Chain because the metaphor for that relationship was a silver chain that tied the white man's ship and the Iroquois canoe to the Tree of Peace. An actual silver chain was made to symbolize their agreement. The three links of that chain were said to represent peace and friendship forever, the basic themes of all Iroquois treaties. This is also the first written treaty to use the famous phrases: 'as long as the sun shines upon the earth; as long as the waters flow; as long as the grass grows green, peace will last.' "

"We will not be like Father and Son, but like Brothers." This wampum belt confirms our words. These two rows will symbolize two paths or two vessels, traveling down the same river together. One, a birch bark canoe, will be for the Indian People, their laws, their customs and their ways. We shall each travel the river together, side by side, but in our own boat. Neither of us will make compulsory laws or interfere in the internal affairs of the other. Neither of us will try to steer the other's vessel."

are the people who belong on the other side of the water
to either of us?"

--American Commissioners
to Sachems of the Six Nations

I can not understand why, or how, the state or anyone else, can just come in & take people's children! Regardless of their ancestry, ethnic group, race, or financial situations. No child should ever be taken from their own home or family, unless they are being abused or endangered. If "they" really cared, & actually wanted to help, then HELP THE ENTIRE FAMILY! Give them support, proper & equal education & opportunities, help them find meaningful decent paying jobs to support their families & pay their bills. Why send the kids into other non-native, or other, period, homes, instead of using that money to help the families they were born into?? The American government is, &, has always been, a JOKE, they have always stuck their noses into others business, tried to control or destroy anything or people that gets in their way. This may be a "free country", but even freedom isn't really free. I'm ashamed of my ancestors, I'm ashamed by all we did & continue to do, to our country's true Native Americans, to people world-wide, to our wildlife, including wild horses, wolves, bison & others, & to our environment. Help these children stay in their own homes, with their own families. Stop treating them like second class citizens, give them the support they need & rightly deserve! The government helps immigrants, but not their own??

Gladly signed. I find this so appalling that I'm at a loss for words. Obviously there's some crooks in the South Dakota government that are stealing these children to fill their coffers.
This action goes way back with the white man taking the Native American children, putting them in white schools, not allowing them to even speak their own language and severing ties with their own families for many years, if not forever. My heart is truly saddened by this as I became friends with a great many Native Americans.

I am glad to see the outraged response to this article! This has been going on way too long and all too quietly to the people who don't know. We must always speak out and up when people assume they can do whatever they want to American Indians. It has to stop. The Indian walks in Peace, and doing so, people expect that there is not much happening in this world. But as everone has said, this is child slavery, abduction, genocide, and imho taking Native children away from their ancestry is a sin. I wasn't allowed to live my own heritage until I became an adult. And even then, my ancestry was kept a secret because of the mixed blood and in the days of old, they did not want to be known as having "squaws as wives." My own Grandfather was ashamed of who he was and Great Grandfather told everyone to hush about the bloodlines. I am NOT one who will hush! I am proud of the blood that runs in my veins and always have been and always will be. I too, will do all I can on this "issue" , while walking in peace as I do so. I have a strong love for all kindred spirits and animals, all humans and our enviroment. Wado for reading.

Sometimes, I wonder, what America would be like, what kind of country would she be, if our early European ancestors would have actually befriended, & learned to happily & peacefully coexist with the native peoples that were already living here, instead of taking everything by force away from them???? It will always be a "what if", but, I'm pretty positive America would be a much happier, kinder, nicer, greener, peaceful, & fairer place to live. A place everyone would want to live in, work in & raise their families in. A positive & good role model for the world. A country with diversity, true freedoms, &, no prejudice. Too bad fairy-tales don't come true. Maybe, someday.......

What kind of despicable creatures are these people anyway? Taking children from their parents so they can make money from the government. The government should quit rewarding them from stealing children. So frustrating about those girls being raped and no one stands by them. Petition signed but honestly without much hope for the Indian nation.

the great Sioux Nation ,of which I belong,is the largest Native American Tribe
alas S Dakota really treats them badly, and is extremely prejudiced against them while using the fact that they are there for tourist revenue, the tribe doesn't see a penny.
so ridiculous, while we are admired for our laws, and there exists an online lakota dictionary
they are still getting a rough deal, and their language which has been salvaged over the year of which I study
is coming back into use,so why punish the children....south dakota is the most sadistic state when it comes to respecting their Indian roots.
