Ideas for the online comments or snail mail:
Nations Development Institute by email at rfoxworth@firstnations.org.

To send a letter to the FDA, you can use this address and language:

(Date)

Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg
Food and Drug Administration
WO Bldg. 1, Rm. 2217
10903 New Hampshire Avenue
Silver Spring, MD 20993

REF: Docket No. FDA-2011-N-0921
Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption

Dear Commissioner Hamburg:

(Insert your tribe name) is requesting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration adhere to HHS policy as part of an active outreach and consultation with tribes during the open comment period for the Docket referenced above. Especially as the proposed rule in the Docket impacts tribal- and Native-owned agricultural operations that are also regulated by the USDA, and in light of the USDA’s own tribal consultation policy and practices, the FDA should adhere to the HHS Tribal Consultation Policy and take action to meet its responsibilities in Indian Country as soon as practicable.

Due to the impact this Proposed Rule will have on tribes and tribal agricultural operations as well as its potential economic and workforce impacts on tribal and Native-owned operations, NCAI has encouraged tribes to file and will be filing comments in response to this Proposed Rule. (Insert your tribe name) is requesting the FDA to take immediate action to consult with us concerning the impacts of these proposed rules and all other rules implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act, passed by Congress in 2010.

Sincerely,

(Your name and title)

This is complicated isn't it, Nancy? I went the simple route as shown above in Nancy's example. I wonder if the multilevel of complication is just to put people off from being involved.

Surely, if it's not a quick answer, many statements would walk away. I know our Care2 folks care about the Native American plight...Thanks Kit!

I think people care very much, about the plight of the Native American, about the twisted misuse of language to avoid the direct need for confrontation here.

I think you are absolutely RIGHT, Kit.

Some of these petitions are so complicated they would challenge
a university professor.

This is what I did...
I copied Nancy's letter body.
then I clicked on comment
I pasted the letter in the comment area
I inserted my name over the tribe name
Filled in the easy things
For organization name I use citizen
Fill in you own representative - Mine is MIke Quigley from Illinois
For category I used Individual Consumer
Then click on submit.

I think it's right. I fill out a lot of these and I have gotten used to them. One of the charities always asked for comments the USFWS but what they really mean is FWS. It drives me batty.

If not for instruction from and provision of so many food crops to the invading Europeans, the entire history of the planet would have included mass starvation. Indigenous have had too much interference and intrusion already...wisdom is where it's at, not this nonsense.
